Second item first - I think the "pilers on" are full of hooey. I doubt the scandal is much bigger than first reported, but when you see a chupachabra, everyone wants to see one. Rockefeller is just FOS.
As to the first, Murdoch has taken a big hit and it is going to get worse before it gets better. But he did not get to where he was by being stupid. His closing of the paper was a triage to stem the blood. It does not stop it, just cuts it down. He will emerge, smaller, leaner and healthier than before. And build from there.
But if his entire empire crumbles--including Fox--what will MSNBC have to talk about then?

I am no Fox fan but I think there is something bigger going on here than we see. All the news stations have already convicted Rupert which is BS. An unnamed source giving a public report that makes the headline on every news outlet, WTF, utter crap and rail roading.

Rupert Murdoch has for too long influenced the British Political system. Many politicians believe that elections can only be won by the backing of the Murdoch Empire, which I find disgraceful. Prime Ministers such as David Cameron and Tony Blair have always cuddled up to the Murdoch Family in the attempt to gain favorable coverage of their party.
I am glad the UK is taking steps forward to prosecute those involved, and stop the bidding for BskyB takeover by Murdoch. That guy owns too many media subsidries and is become a threat to democracy.
I have always believed that Media should be unbiased in every view they take, but it is becoming increasingly difficult due to media organisations wanting to expand there media corporations.
But here is the real question. The media only cater for us. The NEWS OF THE WORLD (Murdoch UK paper) was closed down recently due to phone hacking scandal. This paper was the biggest selling Sunday newspapers in the country. The reason this paper was so famous was because it was able to find 'dirt' on people which no other newspaper could find out, which was later found out they obtained this information through illegal practices.
We create Demand within the market, and people supply it to us. If you don't want to hear the views of one media outlet, swap to another.
In a normal capitalistic market you would be correct, and perhaps that is what the British media is (I cannot comment on it). However, the US market has demonstrated that they are not controlled by the "public" demand, but by ideology. And that is why they are suffering so. Fox is not associated with the scandal rocking the British Tabloid and did not benefit (any more than any other media outlet did). Yet it is the biggest News provider (by viewership) today because it is basically answering the question "What is happening in the world" honestly. CNN is dying, MSNBC is merely a post-partum abortion, and the Broadcast stations (news part) are dying (the newsprint media is pretty much dead - they just do not know it yet). All because they would "Rather" make news than report it.
Fox has the ratings it does because country wide it is on every basic cable package. It's being shoved down your throat and you don't even realize it.
We need some Americans to confirm this.
In Canada I have basic cable and I get CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, CBC, CTV, all 24 hour news with CBC being my favourite.
I do not agree with "shoved down your throat". They did a lot of innovative graphics and some other stuff new to the "news" industry which brought a lot of the video game generation on board just for the wow factor.
I just caught CNN fudging poll numbers about the budget but they get away with it because they do not list the source of the poll. Probably took the poll in their lunch room. "A recent poll" what a joke, they are confusing public poll with a striper pole.
So is CNN (on even more than Fox) and MSNBC. So that is not it since it appears that the news channels are on basically every basic package.
CNN is in the basic package for Dish, FNC is not. Directv has all of them in all of their packages, nothing as basic as Dish offers.
My old cable service in Anchorage had FNC one package up from the other three, that would have been about the time they took the #1 spot. I've never even heard of a cable package not containing CNN while it had FNC. MSNBC on the other hand has so few viewers at this point that it's been getting dropped for being a money sink.

Your union job disappears when the company you worked for goes bankrupt after being forced to take deals it can't sustain in the long run, to avoid a quicker death by strike in the short run. Your pension disappears, your health benefits disappear, and you're left with less than you started because you're in debt up to your eyeballs on the home, vehicles, and credit card bills you can't afford with your skill set. How has your union helped you?
Greece is just a few years ahead of us. This country has already been screwed into the ground by anti-business behavior stacked with crony capitalism. We're essentially a fascist state, economically. Companies like GE get billions in write offs and subsidies to build economically infeasible, legally required products. In the mean time it takes you a month to get a business license only to find out no one will give you a loan because all of the capital is going into government debt. Even should you find creditors, you have to pay your employees twice what they're worth once you manage to get the ball rolling, and god forbid they ever form a union, because the legal costs alone will put you in the hole trying to manage all of your legally required actions.
Once you've already stacked the deck, and it's been stacked big time, it's easy to label the other side of the argument as extremist. Fox is not a propaganda outfit, they are not pro business and never have been. If they were, they wouldn't have Stossel around trashing all of the crony capitalism, or O'Reilly dishing on our oil companies for price setting, and wrongly. Daring to report just how much some monkey with a wrench makes off his no skill job in a bankrupt company doesn't make them pro business. It's simply good reporting, listing a known cause for an event of public import.
Unions are a good thing, the current state is anything but. It is legally protected extortion, you have the right to unionize, but your employer doesn't have the right to fire your ass for not showing up to work. It's no better than the historical cases of abuse where employers trapped workers into an environment where they had to keep working to pay off debts incurred because of their jobs. Without Right To Work, even the employee is held prisoner to the union these days.
Fox gets the ratings it gets because it's all inflammatory right-slanted bogus infotentment, and not real journalism. And they present it in a way that's fun to watch. That's all. It's more fun to watch than the old boring newsmedia. The exact reason why that idiot rush limbaugh has the ratings he has.
And because people want to hear what they want to hear from the news, not the "truth" that real journalism is about. Honestly all cable news is crap these days, all they do is analysis. If you are the "Give me the facts and let me decide for myself" kind of person, you already left for the internet a long time ago.

Wealth is produced, increasing consumption by taxing production has never worked in the recorded history of mankind, expectations otherwise are signs of insanity.
Right now we're just starving the third world, and, conveniently enough, the Islamists. A little ways further along the current trend, and it will be global. Once the financial house of cards collapses, the regulatory and financial roadblock to productivity is going to hit like a hammer, with our own government serving as the anvil.
While some agencies are a pain, others are very important. Take the FDA for example. That was started in the 1910's because someone wrote an investigative book about the meat industry. The factory in the book was putting things like rat poison, dead animals, sawdust, and other stuff into their ground beef as filler. The FDA has also stopped many dangerous drugs from being released onto the market. These agencies stop lasse-faire capitalism, which proves the fact that most people are greedy fucks who will do anything to make money no matter the cost. China doesn't have something like the FDA, and a 2008 a group was caught putting what essentially was plastic into baby formula. Agencies shouldn't be removed, just some should be scaled back in power, like the EPA, which has been hijacked by far left environmentalism nuts. I agree with you on low taxes and the government blowing shit up. We also need to cut back welfare to immigrants, so all these damn Mexicans will stop dropping anchor babies for free benefits.
Back to the main subject. Murdoch is a slimebag who needs to face the consequences of what he's done. His empire is a blight on good journalism. News and opinion are completely intertwined on FOX, and I find it really hard to believe he had nothing to do with the order to hack people's cell phones.
Hell, we really should just stop that supermarket tabloid shit in general. That stuff being in demand really shows something about our nation.
