Hey everyone I thought this group of people above all else should be the first I contact regarding....what this post is about haha. Hopefully it's alright to post this here, but if not, no hard feelings if this thread gets locked.
Basically I'm tired of us gamers getting ripped off for map packs and other DLC, having to pay more for them on top of an already overpriced game. It is not fair and it is not right. Big industry "leaders" (for lack of a better word) release games with a fraction of the content they should have just so they can charge extra for the rest of it later on down the line, in multiple transactions no less! That's ridiculous and unacceptable in my eyes.
So I've created a page on Facebook (as a start) to help raise awareness to the issue, gather gamers that are also sick and tired of being ripped off for bad games and extra content that costs more, and well try to get these publishers and developers to see that enough is enough. We don't want it anymore and refuse to buy into the money grubbing scams.
So I ask you, Stardock gamers, gamers who are very well versed in the world of gaming, gamers who support The Gamer's Bill of Rights movement, and gamers that are pro-modding, freedom, and virtually unlimited and ever changing user based content within the games we love. I ask you to join in and help raise attention to the issue of paying for pitiful content that should be included with games for free.
Keep in mind PC gamers, Xbox gamers, Wii gamers and PS3 gamers are all gamers. We are all in this together.
Myself, and I assume many others here are fed up with the greed and want to bring the gaming industry back to where it belongs...where the developers and publishers think about the GAMERS FIRST!
We, the gamers, the consumers that buy the games put on the shelves are the driving force behind the video game industry. We need to remind companies of that fact and make sure they know we won't put up with being ripped off any longer. We need to take a stand, gamers of all platforms uniting to combat the greed that has taken over the gaming world.
It's GAMERS vs. GREED and the gamers need to win!
I invite you all to join up on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Fight-For-Free-DLC/151294358277116
You're invited to be an active part of the page because after all, without gamers...gaming can't exist! Feel free to show your support, complain about these money hungry companies, chat in the discussion board or reminisce and share stories of the older better days of gaming, or spread the word and share stories about companies like Stardock and developers like Ironclad who have it right! Spread your knowledge and experience to others on our page and don't forget to tell all your gamer friends about our cause. The more the merrier!
We're also on Twitter at http://twitter.com/fffdlc
We will also be adding videos to YouTube before long at http://www.youtube.com/fightforfreedlc so feel free to subscribe there too!
Thanks everyone for taking the time to read this and I look forward to chatting with some of you more on the issue.
Have a great day!
The thing about Homeworld is it was so well done to begin with, the story was top notch and the gameplay was solid, never has there been another 3D RTS quite like it, besides its derivatives of course, I mean it even had a GotY edition, so they clearly did something right. Cataclysm and Raider Retreat were basically DLC.
Based on what I have seen in watching replays, heard in listening to what people are saying, and observed in editing the StarCraft Wiki; one of the things about SC2 that has really annoyed me is the dramatic change in the Zerg tech tree, while the Terrans and the Protoss didn't really changed much, and the changes that were made to them were for the better.
The way they have handled the Zerg makes me think they now have a completely different vision for the Zerg, and perhaps wrong vision. The Lurker was doomed to fail at tier 3, and the Hydralisk/Roach situation is just weird. I really hope they make the HotS Zerg more like the SC1 Zerg, because it worked, though I don't think it is going to happen.
Raider Retreat was certainly DLC... kinda... it was actually derivative of a mission cut from the original.
Cataclysm, I feel, wasn't so much DLC. Not only did the Kuun-Lan introduce a new support system (which I feel shouldn't have been rehashed in number 2), but it also gave you new classes and enemies and a storyline which might not have been quite as epic, but was still cool. Not to mention playing as the Beast introduces elements that I think Starcraft should have considered taking notes on.
Then again, if Cataclysm were to be considered DLC, it still counts as worth the money to me.
As for the zerg, I've heard a few things like that, but I haven't played. Can't say much.
I absolutely support what this thread stands for! No more DLC tricks!
As an example, I bought my really very last DLS for EU3 - eastern and western custom sprites. They are rather nice, really...
Reading back through this thread I notice that the discussion revolves around D2: LOD, Homeworld Cataclysm, DA: O, and similar stuff and complains that all DLC quality isn't in that vein. It strikes me that this seems like complaining that every game isn't as good as D2, Homeworld, and DA.
You're going to play and enjoy plenty of games that aren't as good as any of those three, but apparently DLC has to be on a "classic" level in order to be worth the money?
The "DLC BAD!!!" argument just strikes me as consumers whining about the fact that they have to be conscious consumers. They want the industry, or someone else, to do all the work for them. There will always been good and bad products, no matter what we're talking about. If you play video games, it's your job to figure out what your tolerance is for game quality risk and then make sure you buy games that you will enjoy within that threshold.
And though it has already been said, it is worth noting again that the cost to produce a game has risen significantly in the last 25 years, but the price has remained relatively static. It hasn't even risen with inflation (A $50 game in 1986 would cost $98 today). The margins have gotten smaller and smaller. This isn't a plea for everyone to feel bad for publishers, but this debate doesn't exist in a vacuum. The economics of the industry certainly come into play. Keep that in mind when complaining about "dress up" DLC or the fact that companies are looking for ways to increase the revenue in the industry. It's capitalism. If you don't like it, don't buy it.
I bought Dragon Age I from Impulse, and got the Ultimate Edition. They threw in all the DLC for free. DA:Origins was going for like $50 or $60 the first several months after it was released. I waited like 1 1/2 years, got it and all the DLC for $30. That arrangement worked out well: I got some good equipment and easy quests that made the game flow easier for free. I never had to play through the hard way and then be left craving for more, plunking down $9.95 here and there.
Sc2 with Battlenet2.0 is a legit case. The graphical user interface was designed to promote the DLC maps to the top of the visible list at the expense of any easy access to the community maps. The result is a very frustrating experience despite any DLC has yet to be released with only a small handful of maps getting played and a very upset mod community.
Only case where the DLC ruined it BEFORE it came out.
How is Homeworld Cataclysm DLC exactly? I still have my original install disc; it's not a small add on, it's a stand alone game.
Mentioning good examples of expansions and DLC seems to be par for the course in a discussion about DLC. LoD and Homeworld are expansions (by my opinion anyway.) And is the DA DLC considered good by the whole? Unless you picked up the ultimate edition for a sane price like tetleytea, each one is a poor addition and representation of the game.
Yes it does, but inflation is just a small part of equation. Do you think that game companies have been losing money due to rising costs over the last 25 years? The gaming industry is still extraordinarily profitable, without DLC, without $60 games, without pre-order gimmicks.
Don't mistake my dislike of crappy DLC as my opinion that it's a bad business decision. Just because I don't like or support something doesn't mean I think they aren't printing they're own money.
Was thinking the same thing.
Well, Raider Retreat is DLC, but Cataclysm really isn't, though it uses much of the same stuff as the original.
it uses the same engine and takes place soon after the Dust Wars, so of course many factions still use the same vessels, but it doesn't require the other games to play, has very different tactical mechanics, and was produced by a different company. Raider Retreat, although it was part of the original game and cut after the demo release, I will give you.
I'm not sure why the lines are blurred, but perhaps that's due to my own ignorance on the availability. Was Cataclysm ever available for download at release? How about Raider's Retreat? Did they charge for RR? I have the disc versions of them so downloading either at the time wasn't on my radar (Raider's Retreat came with Cataclysm.) Using many of the existing resources doesn't mean anything, as nearly all expansions (new and old) just build upon the current system. Even some sequels.
DLC has been around for quite awhile. long before Sony and Microsoft considered challenging Nintendo and Sega. The problem with many of us old guys is that DLC was mostly free. Now that we're having to pay for things that we're accustomed to being gratis, and most of those things aren't worth the prices that are asked, it's doubly annoying.
