I have to admit I'm disapointed by E-3 ! Nothing really striked me ! Nothing really original...
Of course Elder Scroll and some other but... I mean all those games were pretty much without any originality !
I too noticed the lack of originality. I am not impressed in the least by the Wii U, especially after the announcement that each station would only support one control (while supporting other types of controls at the same time, like the old wii controller). Edit: Apparently that may not be true, see below.
With that said, the following titles in particular I thought looked extremely high-quality: Bf3, From Dust, Prey 2. There was also an action-oriented game with a main character that was immortal, you could rip your own head off and roll around. Don't remember the title, but at least a tiny bit of originality in there.
Dust 514 gets lots of originality points as well, an MMOFPS that ties into an MMO on the PC, which is running on the same server, and Dust players can join the same EVE corporations and chat in the same voice channels and chat channels, and there's true links between the game. In one dev presentation, the guy said they already have a system where a Dust player can request an orbital strike, which is then executed by an EVE player.
That's not official yet. There's like five different people all claiming five different things. The other day Reggie Fils-Amie apparently "confirmed" that it can support two of the new controllers http://wii.ign.com/articles/117/1176175p1.html Who knows though, Nintendo hasn't been very clear about that.
In any case, I'm cautiously optimistic about the Wii U. The whole tablet/controller thing is an interesting idea, but if it's not implemented well... I'm glad that Nintendo seems to be doing a lot to attract major third party titles. Assassin's Creed and Batman: Arkham City are good, and the EA CEO hinted at Battlefield. And then there was the HD Zelda tech demo, which looked absolutely amazing. Hopefully it will be developed into a full game.
The 3DS has some good games coming out in the next couple month. I'll finally have some games to make buying it worth it! The PSVita looks interesting, I'm impressed that they priced it at $250 (for the wi-fi only one). Nintendo might finally have some competition in the handhelds. Microsoft's conference was pretty boring. Bring Minecraft over was kind of surprising, but I don't know why you would get it on the 360 instead of the PC. Halo 4 was hardly surprising or original, but it was pretty much the only thing from their conference that I cared about. Too much Kinect nonsense
It was actually kind of funny to watch Eve players freak out at the end of the trailer showing Dust players could get weapons to hit ships over the planet.
In the age of social media, blogs, etc. there's really never going to be anything "original" that hasn't leaked or been talked about elsewhere. The best thing about E3 is some of the demo video really.
What I liked but already knew about:
Battlefield 3 will be spectacularly awesome.
PSVita - Goofy name but nice hardware. No need since I have an iPhone.
Wii U - Big meh
i liked the demos for Star Wars Old Republic and Elder Scrolls V (the dragons attacking was pretty cool). I still think SD should have been there with EFE tho.
Honestly, two minutes is still a bit long for the console content this year. Of course this is PC gaming, but E3 has never been that important to us.
I have to add, I saw an article confirming it was only one tablet for the Wii U for technical reasons.
Battlefield 3 - No, seriously, battlefield is battlefield no matter what ! It stays a game highly unoriginal even if high-tec !
PS Vita (and 3DS at the same time) - Yeah right, but no ! I also have an iphone and games are 1 buck ! Some are more expansive but the Iphone has so much more utilities too ! Iphone stays the number 1 for portable console !
Wii U - Seriously? I mean a controller with a screen and a more powerful machine? Is that all they could come with ? An upgraded version of the Wii with some gadget controler ! The wii was amazing and a revolution but now with the Wii U... It's kind of overrated and I got sick of moving in all direction while playing the Wii ! Now it's only used for my netflix ! And the name is seriously lame ! Project Café was better.
Zelda, no, it won't go HD on Wii U, it has been confirmed, it's only a tec-demo to present the Wii U and no zelda is on the sight for the Wii U yet.
Assassin's Creed and Batman - No, not original at all ! Batman has had so many adaptation lately that it's not something I'm looking forward and Assassin's creed was pretty amazing in video but the surprise effect went away with the first one.
And there wasn't any strategy game what a deception !
For originality I have to stop because child of eden is truly original ! And there's a couple games truly original that will come out too but they were not at the E3 !
Elder Scrolls - Well, nothing new was really shown and I don't know yet if it will be worth it after spending hours on Morrowind and Oblivion I think I'll wait a couple month after the release to know if yes or no !
Now I really advise Rebellion !!! LOL It makes me look forward Rebellion even more ! And I admit, as a fan of Master of Magic and being disapointed with War of Magic, I'm really looking forward Fallen Enchantress. They give lots of info about the game and makes me drool each time when I compare to War of Magic. I hope we'll get nice info about Rebellion too !
There, 2 games I'm looking forward and 2 that were not at the E3 when they should have been ! I mean, I know what answer you will give me but they would truly have deserved a special place over there !
Was that Asura's Wrath? I don't know if that's original or just plain trippy, but it certainly sounds like a fun game if you've got some pot while playing it.
Nintendo this year hasn't impressed me at all. I loathe the 3DS because the whole draw is a gimmick that doesn't work in the place I play a portable the most (on the bus to work). Beyond that it's underpowered and has horrible battery life. The Wii U is just... WTF. I have no idea what to make of it, and I'm terrified of how much dropping one of those controllers is going to cost to replace.
No, not Asura's wrath. This was more futuristic and demon-focused.
As I said, there's lots of conflicting reports, and Nintendo has been very unclear. But as far as I know, the article I linked above is the most recent and closest to an "official" announcement that there is. A couple days before that Miyamoto said something along the lines of "Currently it only supports one, but we're looking at letting it support more."
Let me know when your iPhone has anything equivalent to Mario, Zelda, Uncharted, Little Big Planet, or anything that isn't a glorified flash game. And it's hard to stay the number one portable console when it never held that title in the first place . The DS has sold at least 144 million, while the iPhone is at 73 million (both of those numbers are from the end of 2010).
What more do you want from it? Two of the biggest complaints with the Wii were that it's graphics weren't up to par with the 360/PS3 and that the third party support for it consisted mostly of half-assed ports and shovelware. The Wii U certainly has the graphical power, and Assassin's Creed, Batman, etc, show that it might actually have decent 3rd party games. I didn't say they were original. Another major complaint with the Wii was that it didn't have a "normal" controller. The Wii U still doesn't, but it's a lot closer.
How can the Wii U be overrated when it's still, at best, 10 months away?
I also never said Zelda HD was confirmed or that it was anything more than a tech demo. I just said that hopefully they will develop said demo further. To quote myself:
Pikmin 3 was confirmed for the Wii U, which is probably the closest we'll ever get to a decent (real time) strategy game on a console. As to how not mentioning any is a "deception," I have no idea .
Anyway, as IslandDog said, you're never going to get something "original," so you shouldn't put so much importance in it. Originality doesn't necessarily mean good, either. Rebellion and Fallen Enchantress are both expansions to already existing games. Where's the originality in that?
With the rate at which phones are gaining in both power and adoption, it's only a matter of time. The 3DS won't get to the numbers the DS did at all, and sooner or later we're going to see larger budget games appearing on phones because the proliferation is so high.
True, but we've still got a while to go before we get to that point, I think. It's definetly premature to say anything along the lines of the iPhone being the number one portable just yet. It would also help if phones like the iPhone didn't require expensive data plans...
Wargame:European Escalation looks good and one of the few at E3 that actually has some originality or at the very least didn't imitate other successful franchises. Its a Cold War RTS by the makers of RUSE. All land units have limited fuel and ammo and supply carriers are required to replenish units supplies which need to be protected. Units have different speed and visibility in different terrain and morale is very important. It looks interesting but the incredibly bland title wont help sales.
This is Battlefield 3, may have to get this one....
Never dead was the game I didn't remember the name of.
This issue was the killer for me as I had actually considered getting this for my family next Christmas but not anymore. However, I would like to help clear up the confusion of the controller. Basically, the system will come with only 1 of the new controllers and they will not be selling the new controller as individual items to be able to add more so you will be stuck with only 1 of the new controllers for the Wii U. You will depend upon the original Wiimote to be able to play with other people.
My question is, what if this one controller breaks? After all the Wii is more of a child's game console than it is an adult game console and although adults are not immune to breaking hardware as well, children are more likely to break them (I should know I have 3 kids). Without individual controllers sold at stores, how would one go about replacing a broken controller? Maybe they will offer a way to replace it thru them, but then how will this stop people from simply claiming their controller is broken and they want a replacement and this is how they would get a second controller?
And yes, a second controller may work according to Nintendo but the concept is that it will be a controller from a second Nintendo Wii U that a family or friend may own and can bring the controller over to use with your system. This means the hardware might be able to handle more than 1 of the new controllers, they just won't give you the option to purchase one separately. I think this is what will kill this system right off the back. it did for me. I'm assuming the reason for not allowing more than 1 is because the video on the controller is a stream coming from the box directly sent to the controller which is why the controller can be used as a screen as well to play most of the games. I guess their hardware may not be set up to send 2 individual signals to the controller screens as it has to take into account each player is a different character on the games and people would expect to have different details on each screen and they may not be able to accomplish this yet.
Where did you hear that they won't be selling individual controllers? This is the first I've heard of that and I've made an effort to stay up-to-date. Besides, they have to sell individual controllers, because, as you said, you need a way to replace broken ones. Even if Nintendo doesn't sell them, I'm sure there will be 3rd party versions of the controllers.
Also, last I heard, it's not technical reasons preventing the use of multiple controllers. Apparently they don't want to force people to buy expensive tablet-like things (which is actually a pretty good thing if you ask me. Those won't be cheap assuming they do sell them).
But doesn't that also mean you can't use the new controller's features in any game where more then one person can play on the same TV? Local MP was probably the place where the Wii stood up the best relative to the other consoles and they're hobbling things by giving out all this new stuff then saying "oh you can only use that in single player".
No idea, but that's what I get out of it too. Doesn't make any sense, because local MP was definetly a highlight of the Wii, like you said. They did show a demo of a game where you could have 5 players, one with the new controller and four with Wiimotes, which is kind of cool but not the same. At least there is still the option for developers to make split-screen MP, which is better than nothing.
Haven't been following E3 for a few years. Just not interesting these days....It's mostly consoles & consolegames and that might be the reason I got little interest in it these days.
Some people mention originality just like it was important. I couldn't care less about originality. I just want good games.
I've seen the presentation of the Wii-U and I'm supremely impressed! I NEVER thought I'd be that impressed by a console. The innovation in that thing! Nintendo has done it again. They will win the consolewar again.
this is got to be one of the weakest E3s ever. And i like consoles too.
360 led with MW3. Wow a multiport game that is a clone of the previous ones. No MS failed.
Sony had the powerful vita at a cheap price. Thats great news.
But why do people get exctied about yet more video footage of a game already announced? Gears 3 and Uncharted 3 have already been announced, discussed, and trailer and gameplay released. yet people want to see more footage at E3 this year? ya thats boring.
Dark Souls...nothing new, but on my #1 list of games to get.
Skyrim- That had some new stuff. Dragons looks awesome. and console graphics looked great.
BF3- Ya i want that...but fail. Nothing new.
New Jagged Alliance... that can be fun. Thank god its not another PC game gone mainstream.
EVE and Dust- Now i maybe interested yet again in EVE.
Nintendo- WiiU, Good idea, but since Nintendo has been failing and selling out their fans for the past 15 years....screw them.
Dragons Dogma- Looked AWESOME. But found it has no online multiplayer... that we know of certain. They said it will have online something. Something unique. Could be online gameplay or crappy online exchange.
I like when the E3 is made for announcements and cool stuff. But this one was boring.
I don't pay very much attention to E3, because I don't have the latest consoles, and that is all it basically is, consoles, consoles, and more consoles.
I honestly thought Nintendo was coming up with something other than a fancy Wii controller.
I wouldn't say it's been quite that long. The Gamecube had some pretty amazing games, and the Wii has a handful as well. The DS also has a lot of fantastic games. The 3DS remains to be seen to an extent, but there are some good ones coming in the next couple months.
That by far was Nintendo's biggest mistake with the Wii U reveal. It's not just a contoller for the Wii; it is a brand new system. But they chose to focus on the controller in their presentation, showing just a quick picture of the console itself in the background, leading many people to think it is just a controller.
Ah, so it is basically a DS meets a Wii Remote, I was still expecting something a little bit more original.
