It is total research accumulated in the game.
thank you... whew... (... sighs and releases stress and fear)
Is there a way to make an army fly? Or only individual hydras?
Mass Flight, A4, Enchantment 7, give all friendly soldiers flight during a battle.
The Flying Ship, Con-8, Unique gives flying on the strategic map.
No large-scale flying hydra armies in the early game.
Also flying carpets for map move, but they only move small numbers of units, not armies to be sure.
There are also various teleport type spells (well including teleport), some of which let you move all the troops with the commander casting it, though they are not as useful as people might hope, on purpose though, they would be way OP.
However, A2 jarls (you need a booster to do this I'm pretty sure, the odds of a natural A2 jarl are miniscule) can cloud trapeze anywhere, not in water though, I think. And a couple geared out Jarls is a freaking army by themselves.
Eriu can make excellent use of CTing thugs, TTN as well. Caelum not so much, only because their A2 mages aren't great thugs and the eagle kings of this era are too valuable to risk, in my opinion anyway, but they can still do it, just have to weigh the risks.
Tactical only, like wonderloss said. Or you have to spam gift of flight with a bunch of A2 mages and the troops getting flying with hold and attack orders.
cool, and how does one counter a flying army?
Storm makes flying impossible (with a few exception, mostly caelian units).
Or, just kill them, they'll get to you faster, they'll fatigue faster (flying doubles enc I believe, for moving at least), and they'll have 'wasted' a script on making everyone fly.
It does depend on what is flying. Flying tramplers are a pain because they can jump to places you may not expect them, so you have to protect your mages/commanders differently. Flying regular units doesn't change that much, though you will probably find a better positioning/script if you know that's what you're facing.
Or get your own fliers and use them to get behind your opponent.
So has anyone else encountered each other in the game yet? This turn Arco and I discovered that we are neighbours when we both invaded the same territory without knowing the other was there. I almost accidentally killed his pretender; she was leading the battle but managed to flee to safety along with a few other survivors.
Ghostwes question; I have met only one player so far... and I hope we don't accidentally attack the same province. Two other sets of candles are on my radar, but whose candles they are is unknown at this time. I am happy Arco's pretender escaped. In the elementist game, my pretender got wacked on turn 3... so losing a pretender this early is nasty... BTW - I would love to know how several players have conquered so many provinces so quickly?
Well, you have been researching anti-aircraft flak turrets, right? I hope so or you're screwed!
Um, more seriously... let's see.
Most of the time the fliers will be told to target your rearmost troops, with the hopes of taking out your mages. I would think having a solid group of soldiers guarding your commander would take care of this threat. I am not near the game right now, but I think you can issue your guards commands to <hold><hold><hold><hold><guard commander>.
So if you order your troops as follows, from the left side of the screen to the right:
Guards --> Mages --> Archers --> Vanguard troops
Your guards would start at the far left ie the back of the army, wait a few turns and then move up to encircle the mages. If the fliers attack the rear in the first few turns they will be engaged with the guards anyway, so no big deal. If the fliers do <hold><hold><hold><hold><attack rear> then they will engage the guards while they are encircling the mages, which could potentially be a bad thing but you'd probably do OK if your guards are up to the task. This usually works for me in single player, though I haven't had to deal with enemy fliers too often, and the AI doesn't really use them very well anyway I don't think.
Well, in Abysia's case, I suspect it is because he managed to win the bid on the mercenaries (Burelk's Whatevers). That gave him two starting armies to work with. Otherwise, he would probably have had the same problems he had in Elementalists, as Abysia fields very expensive troops so it would take a while to build up the first army.
In my case, I did some pre-game research to see how indie armies would fare against my starting troops (which aren't great) and also against what troops I could muster on the first turn. I came away from that research with a fairly winning combo that made expansion easy, so long as I don't face certain types of indies. Fortunately, so far, the indies around me are the ones that are easy for me to beat, and the ones that aren't can be easily ignored for now.
Yes, ghostwes:

my Leige Lord, may You live forever! (shes already dead... lol)
i humbly submit this update You commanded abour 18 seconds ago.
Project one: Aluminized Flying turret duo ion burst cannons. - Still attempting, unsuccessfully, to teleport prototype from "Distant Worlds."
Project two: Anti flying carpet de-weaver shooters. - Project still tangled.
Project three: Anti screw pulse drivers. - "Craftsman" legal department still refusing to honor Magnificent and Absolutely Lovely 'import license' You wrote. They still insist that their SearsCorpHQ creature also has to consent.
(please, most kind and honored Pretender, don't blame the messenger.)
END - SUPER SECRET REPORT
good news and bad news
good news that Abyssia encountered a nation of Father-hydra, Let his countless eyes bless them ever!
bad news is that i have sudden work trip next week - early afternoon Wend till Sun night (UTC-5, Toronto) ... I can still pull up a turn on Wend morning, but then i am off - and what's worse, place i am going to - no access to internet ... However, after that i am sure till middle August nothing unexpected will pop up
Please, be merciful
Bpalczewski; I am totally fine with letting all our pretenders get a nap while you are away...
I would be happy to put the game on hold until you return, if everyone else also feels that way.
So is there a waiting list to start the next game? I'd love to get involved with the game. I have it, but never have played MP, so I would consider myself a newbie.
No waiting list, but no open games. You would be welcome to start your own.
I would be kind of concerned if we start clogging up the Elemental/Stardock forums with too many Dominions 3 thread, though. They get large, and tend to be active, so they stay on the front page. Maybe a better way to do it would be to have a single thread here recruiting for games, and the individual games could have a thread on the official forum at Shrapnel or at the other forum that split off.
I would be willing to help organize a new game, if there is sufficient interest.
I can help organize a game if its direct connect, not pbem.Especially if its on www.Dom3Minions.com
Heh, so that's Sauromatia and not C'tis... The message I sent you, then, in game will read a little oddly. Just replace your actual nation for the incorrect one. Unless you wanna make an international incident out of it? Really, Joe can't be bothered to keep all of these non-lava-people straight. They're all the same, really.
Also, yes, my provinces came quickly due to (over)bidding on the first set of mercenaries, who turned out to be 60 militia. They took a province, then promptly got wiped out against Deer Clan Barbarians or something in their second battle. Still, one of the lessons I learned in Elementalists is that Abysia really needs Mercs to expand early, because our armies are way too expensive and slow for the early game.
As for the decrease in income from turn one to turn two, that's because on turn two I got a random event that caused a bunch of unrest (and cost a bunch of tax income) in my capital province. On the plus side, I got a follow-up event the second turn that gave me extra PD in the capital, so there's that. Unfortunately, if I'm being attacked in my capital, things won't be going well. Anyway, the lesson is that choosing Turmoil dominion can make for an interesting game.
I'd play another game, the 2nd one I was supposed to be in is just stuck with people not loading pretenders and other nonsense
yup that's a good idea - we should create the second game with the same settings as alternative reality and see how it unrolls
guys - no much response regarding my trip .... please, dont kick me out
Shadowtongue, are you saying that in your second game, some players are pretending to upload their pretenders? (couldn't resist... sorry)
Another question. I have win XP, and the basic programs. I use open office, etc. I'm a PC noob, as well.
I want to make an outline (yes, just the province borders and the basic geographical features) map of the dom3 game i am in. I understand about map filters, etc. Cut and paste, etc. How would i go about getting a copy of a dom3 map, and get it into open office, so i can print it out, and make photo copies? I find the in game map nice, but confusing. I don't seem to get printscreen to work properly... maybe I am looking in the wrong place for the file. etc. Appreciate it... thanks
can the map file itself be manipulated in some manner to allow it to be printed?
I have gone thru the 'windows help, etc... and still cannot find where the screens or active window that is 'saved via print screen actually are placed by windows. I have searched everywhere. Where are the print screen docs saved on a standard Windows Xp system? Thanks
EDIT: cool. Thanks. i was looking for a location that had saved the print screen file. It never said that it was on the clipboard. I can try and proceed now. Thanks a million. The in-game map is just too busy for me - so i need to make a pen and pencil version from which to plan. Thank you so much.
the easiest thing to do:
after print screen you open regular 'paint' and paste the screen which is held clipboard (CTRL-V) and that's it
I'm fine with waiting for you, bpalczewski.
By the way, I am also in Toronto.
If you go to dominions3/maps and look you will see that the map is in 2 parts. An image file (usually with an extension of .tga or .rgb) and a text information file (extension .map)> Such as the Aran map comes as an aran.tga and an aran.map file
Double clicking the image MIGHT bring it up in a viewer or paint program that will let you print it out
Or you can use Dom3 using the Game Tools and the Map Editor to bring up a map (such as telling it to load aran.map) then you can scroll the size down to where you can see it all and use WinXP screenprint. Thats by hitting the Prt Scn key on the upper right of your keyboard, then opening a paint program such as paint.exe that came with windows. use the EDIT and PASTE to put it into an image, save it and print it
OR you can look for programs that understand TGA and RGb images so you can just click on one and print it anytime you want
Back.......played turn and am up to date, thanks for waiting.
Don't mind waiting for someone else after my foray away.
