Just recently heard about Starfarer, a promising looking indie game that is in alpha right now and available for only 10$ (50% off).
Here is a link to their site: http://fractalsoftworks.com/media/
Video of the one of the missions that comes with the current alpha build:
Looks interesting. In what sense is it supposed to be sandbox? From what I read on the blog the current version consists of a few missions. Is their eventually going to be open world play in the style of Space Rangers 2 or Freelancer?
They're aiming to provide an open universe where you can interact with different planets and groups of people. You'll be able to upgrade your ship, build up a fleet, trade and more.
The alpha just contains some combat that they've organized into missions because they've been working primarily on just the combat so far.
I admit, that combat actually looks pretty good. If they can truely provide a vast open gameworld akin to Space Rangers or Freelancer and some deep ship customization then I'm sold.
Although it looks interesting to me it also reminds me of Gratuitous Space Battles which is mostly a kind of Tower Defense game. And Tower Defense is not really my kind of game.
This.
That vid actually looks pretty good! For $10, might be worth a preorder
There is already a game that offers all of this. It is called Space wolves 3
