I have seen this discussed here a few times, and purchased it recently. I think some others might as well. If there is enough interest, I could start a PBEM game on llamaserver. Info on llamaserver can be found here.
Newbie--5 or fewer MP games. Can be adjusted if needed if there is not enough interest.

The Council is sorrowed by the recent death of one of our most prominent masters of the Matters Arcane Dagan, who finally succumbed to a serious illness and old age. Despite losing his voice, he kept on studying and researching till the and, faithful to his only lifetime passion - magic. Last Rites will be performed by one of the Councilmen himself to honor the service Dagan has performed for our kingdom.
Orders sent in, big battles are anticipated. Watch me forget something absolutely crucial or make some other equivalent careless error.
Either way, it should be quite bloody.
Your a noob until you win a noob-only game.
I take it Tien Chi and Agartha are buddies.
*sigh*
So, I guess I screwed up my orders, causing that battle to go differently than intended. Still should be able to recover from it, however.
If I have a commander and squadron that I want to basically hide in the castle for a turn, rather than engage the enemy immediately, what command should I give them? I thought "patrol" would do this, since the commander didn't really have many other options. This did not have the desired effect, obviously. That makes some sense, given that he was patrolling the area, but I don't see what I should have picked instead...
Also, if I hire someone on the turn before my castle is besieged, is there any way to commit that new commander to different orders than "defend"? Stupid Pontifex was supposed to hide in the castle for a turn as well, but bravely met the enemy instead (and survived, thankfully).
So much to know with this game...
I know that if you have a fort in the province, a 'Defend' order has them stay in the castle. Patrol is what you use if you want them to be out of the castle for a fight. Research definitely has them stay in the castle, and blood hunt I think has them outside the castle. Haven't tried things like pillage, but I assume that has them out of the castle as well.
Well, oops.
Oh well, it was a fun battle and the war rages on. Doubt a complete newb like me can last against you and Hinnom at the same time but I'll give it my best.
News arrives from the front at Zanthrast! A scribe was there to recount the events of the battle:
The lowly markata volunteers (freeloaders) were placed out in the front and ordered to charge at the enemy. They hesitated, but the force of Palankasha's (think tiger people) threatened to cut them down if they did not do as they were told, and so reluctantly, they charged ahead. The demons took great pleasure in watching the tiny monkeys be cut down in a hail of stones and javelins, meeting a fate they so richly deserve.
When the little monkeys were all but wiped out, the two armies clashed. Enemy gladiators formed the front line of the opposing army, while the core of our army was formed by our blessed Palankashas. Our demons proceeded to cut into their ranks causing heavy losses. The enemy launched a counter attack, but to little avail, as the spears could not find their target. Those demons that were injured, promptly healed their wounds as they reengaged the enemy. With the gladiators virtually wiped out, our Lankan army clashed with the backbone of the Ermorian legion. The result was much the same. As the enemy army started to dwindle in their ranks, they began to break, and our faster demons were able to hunt most of them down to their deaths.
A similar victory was acheived on the Canese Plain, but resistance there was somewhat lighter, composed mostly of an organized local defense. Our human fanatic human volunteers did better than expected in that battle, staying engaged throughout, and even taking down quite a few of the defense forces. But as usual, it was our Palankasha's that carried the day.
The fortress at Zanthrast is being sieged, with the fortress in Ermor in sight.
"The difference between Patrol and Defend in a province with a fortress is that patrollers will engage in combat outside the fortress, while defenders will concede the province and become beseiged."
- game manual, page 68.
I am not myself sure about the other commands, but I would expect those that are tied to indoors activity like research, preaching, forging, casting would make you become beseiged, while outdoorsy coomands like, patrol and pillage would make you fight. There is even a command "move and patrol" that make your incoming armies fight instead of hiding.
News of our initial victories against Ermor have given me the strength to finally break free from my infernal prison! I can finally bring my spirit into this world and be with my fellow monkey people!
Angelina Jolie wishes to understand why the people of Arcosephale are suddenly at war with her? Our troops are mobilizing, but there is still time for you to pull out, no harm no foul.

Ah, wait, I have PMs, lol. Hang on. Agartha will send their finest ambassadors, Messrs. Papa and Razzi, to negotiate with the thinkers of Arcosephale.
Family comedy at its best
The dudes from Arcosephale want to know why the cyclopes tried to eat Odysseus and his crew?
Not cool with that...
Theres going to be a BIG rumble down the south east corner of the map, other nations for their own well-being are advised to stay clear of this area until the dust settles.
On the contrary, Angelina Jolie welcomes all nations to send observers to view her latest reality series called, "Agarthan Captain and the World of Tomorrow". She's going to bring all her friends to the party!
The denizens of Arcosephale, once peaceful under the reign of their Great Thinkers, have been corrupted by vicious television-and-movie hating demogogues. These so-called rhetoricians are proclaiming some nonsense about the power of debate, logic, and public speaking, when they should be at home watching television. Led astray by such, they have invaded Agarthan lands, and we are forced to defend ourselves.
Sadly, as a peace-loving people, Agartha does not have a large army, so the tempo is definitely against us.
Postponing 12 hours. No turn from TC yet, only 3 hours to go.
I got it in on time!
Well, that's more like it. Take that, poo flingers.
"Well, that's more like it. Take that, poo flingers."
I am confused. Do you refer to the battle outside of the City of Ermor, where Lanka just crushed your PD and beseiged your castle?
No.
Firstly nobody "forced" you to defend yourself, you chose to get in the way of that spear so you wear the responsibility yourself.
Secondly you have a bunch of Umbrals. They are size 4, larger than my size 2 dudes thus you do have a large army.
Lastly, our Great Thinkers have not been corrupted, they have always been that way
Lanka would like to congratulate Ermor on their strong use of fire magic (which happens to be a weakness against several of our demons) in retaking Zanthrast. A well fought battle indeed.
Thank you, sir. I researched your troops and their weaknesses and planned accordingly.
Now, if only I had researched the difference between "Patrol" and "Defend", grrr. That was a rather drastic mistake, I think, and things would have gone very differently indeed had I given the orders I intended.
I actually lost more troops than you in that battle, by the way, though most of my losses were just slingers and gladiators, the latter of which leave the battlefield after battle anyway (which make them nice for absorbing friendly fire). Your losses, though fewer in number, looked very expensive, in either gold or summoning costs. So I count the battle as a victory, if a somewhat costly one.
Now, sir, with all due respect, get the hell off my lawn!
Your lawn? Hehe...
Thanks. I postponed to be sure. I had to get in bed, but I did not want any stales if they could be prevented.
Is 24 hours still working for everyone? Games are commonly moved to 48 hours by turn 30. I like the regular progress of getting in a turn every day, but I do not want anyone to play badly because there is not enough time to do all they need. Post here or PM if you need more time, otherwise it will stay as it is.
Well, 24 is fine with me but we have been down to the wire a few times. If it is set to 48 but everyone gets their turn before 48 is up, it still processes anyway, right? Seems better to air on the side of caution and set it to 48 in that case. Won't make us any slower, but it will give us some wiggle room if needed.
