I have seen this discussed here a few times, and purchased it recently. I think some others might as well. If there is enough interest, I could start a PBEM game on llamaserver. Info on llamaserver can be found here.
Newbie--5 or fewer MP games. Can be adjusted if needed if there is not enough interest.

(Out of character)
So this is my first time in MP in this game. I mostly toy around with hotseat and roleplay various factions and such, so it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. I'm taking a strong roleplaying approach here where my pretender is having a truly unhealthy obsession with taking down Henan'el.
This is also my first time trying out Lanka, in either SP or MP, but I've always liked their concept and figured I'd give them a whirl (there are a lot of nations in this game). As all the players can see, my research is, well, there has been no research. Thankfully my Lankan demons can give me some momentum in the beginning, where my bless can help them out, but I really better start getting on the ball when researching and site searching if I'm going to survive in the middle and late game.
So I'll guess and see if Hinnom has any surprises for me, as I foresee a good deal of fighting between the two of us, and I honestly don't know who will come out on top, since Hinnom has some pretty scary giants.
Is the type of troops you can build divided in tiers like in Heroes of Might & Magic V where you must buy every creaturedwelling or like Company of Heroes where one building gives access to some troops and another building another set of troops (Weapons Support Center = MG42, Mortars and Snipers | Tank Depot = M10 Tank Destroyer, Sherman Crocodile and Sherman M4) ?
Cause to an outsider like me it's a riddle how Hinnom can have giants already (maybe their the weakest type?).
I read a thread on the Dom III site where one guy asked if his starting things were good and with all those abbreviations it was like reading latin.
Another thread was about one guy asked how to find "sites" and how many there were....Dom III seems alot more complex than Age of Wonders and Elemental.
You could always record your gameplay in FRAPS. On that thought I'll go look for some of that on Youtube.
There are essentially three types of troops. National troops, independents, and summons.
National troops are unique to each nation. They are recruitable only at forts. Some national troops can only be recruited at the capital. Meaning there is only one site for a nation that can recruit them. There are also commanders. At any province, you can only recruit one commander per turn. All recruiting is limited by gold, which is a national pool, and resources that are limited to a specific province.
Independents are recruited from regular provinces. They do not require a fort. Different provinces will provide different troops. This is determined randomly at the start of the game.
Summons are summoned by magic. I doubt much more explanation is needed. They will cost magic gems.
@Campaigner
You have access to all of your recruitable, troops from the outset but some are not necessarily a good investment from turn one because of their cost. This is especially true of commanders, because you can only hire one per turn, and some are absurdly expensive.
Take Abysia, for example. Our "worst" unit is, relative to everyone else, very strong infantry - with a variety of equipment - each of which costs 20 gold and about 27 resources to hire. We also have some better units which cost about 60 gold and 40 resources to hire. Now, on the first turn you only have 400 gold to spend, plus - and this really matters for Abysia - only about 80 resources. So I can hire two of my best troops, or I can hire three of my slightly worse, but cheaper ones, and can then either pay for a better commander type right away, or save up to try to buy our best commander type (costs 440 gold) in turn two.
So even in the home province, where everything is unlocked from the outset, there's a lot of potential variety in strategy and approach. For example, as I mentioned above, even though they cost the same Abysia has 4 different infantry types: flail without shield, axe without shield, axe with shield, and axe with morningstar. Each of those is subtly different from each other, and each has their potential uses.
The real variety, however, comes from two places: independent provinces and summoning spells. Many of the best units in the game are only available through summoning rituals that can only be cast after a lot of research and by appropriately high-level mages. Sometimes, however, the most powerful of those spells might lie down different research paths, so you have to decide ahead of time which one you're going to target. Or, more commonly, a really good summoning spell will lie down one path, but a really good enchantment of some other kind will lie down another path.
Again, with Abysia as an example, "Contact Scorpion Man" - a spell unique to Abysia - lies at Conjuration level 8 (close to the end of the path), but the stuff that lies further up in the conjuration path isn't nearly as useful as, for example, some of the spells midway up the Enchantment and Evocation paths. So what do you, as Abysia, do?
Similarly, while most nations have better troops than are available in independent provinces, each province you capture gives you the chance to hire troops from it that differ from your own. As Abysia, I have no archers, so if I want to hire some, I need to hire them from independent provinces. Many nations lack mages of proficient in certain magic types, so independent provinces are sometimes the only way for them to gain access to that magic. Finally, almost every land-based nation in the game has a hard time getting into water provinces without either 1) powerful magic or 2) conquering provinces that have amphibious troops available for hire.
There's a none-too-short answer to your question. Probably any video you sought out gave you the same answers, but, hey, differentiated instruction and stuff... Some people prefer to read.
I believe you forgot mercenaries. Mercenaries are combat groups who fight for those who pay the most - each three rounds, players bid and the mercs will fight for the pretender who paid the most for three turns. Their greatest advantage is that they are immediately deployable anywhere on your territory. As someone wrote here, some of them are cheap to hire and they die real well

I submitted my latest turn 30 minutes ago, received no error message in reply, but it shows that the server is still waiting for my 2H... anyone else having this problem? If I re-send will that be a problem?
I'm having the same issue. I'll check back later tonight, see where it's at, today's tabletop game day at the local store. Gotta get my world-crushing domination on the old-fashioned way.
The host computer is locked up, most likely. It is typically updated every minute or so. It has been over 9 hours. When it comes back online, everything should process normally.
Current time: 15:52 GMT
My turn is in.. but no reply, "everything is fine" message.....
My turn is in.
Are you all ready for a WAR!!!
War? What is a "war?" haven't experienced being able to do a war, yet... never had enough resources to even consider a war.
But some intel,,, that i am able to do..... and I hope it helps the truly deserving ....
as of 2PM sat, eastern time, arco and hinnom are the only players that still haven't sent their turns in.....guess that have so many options, it takes longer...
I have noticed the usually garrulous Lord Xia is particularly quiet in this thread. I wonder what sort of plans Tien Ch'i is forming in secret places.
Oh, the Lord Xia, and I have communicated a bit...... but I'm not saying what.....
One thing I like about playing this game MP instead of SP is how long it takes to play. Seriously. If I play SP, I am rushing through each of my turns like an ADHD kid on a sugar rush, never stopping to really think about what's going on in the game. With MP, I have a lot of time in which I am forced to think about how to go about achieving my goals, and, for that matter, actually think about what my goals should be. I also really like the diplomacy aspect, though I find it's getting a bit difficult to keep track of what I've discussed with everyone. No fault of Stardock, whose messaging system was surely not designed to allow Dominions 3 players to MP, but I kind of wish there was a better way to do this... maybe I'll give those I am in contact with my actual email address so we can discuss game stuff there.
Looks like the server is back up. Just waiting for Hinnom. Sorry for my delay, looks like the turn proccessed just as I was going to bed.
The official forums also work pretty well. You get an email notification when you receive a PM, and you can subscribe to threads to be emailed when they are updated.
I also appreciate the slower pace. It really helps to plan a turn, and makes you less likely to forget about your scouts out patrolling and other little details.
Sorry for the delay, I was at a family celebration (my wife's birthday), got sunstroke, and when I was putting my daughter to sleep, I fell asleep too, so I did not have the opportunity to send my turn in yet, which I intent to remedy now (luckily I've woken up, it's 1:27 AM here and everyone's sleeping, so it's Dominions time...). The negotiations I led through the PMs were written on a tiny screen of my old mobile phone during the day Real life sometimes interferes...
As for the complexity, it's amazing. There are so many decisions to make, so many options, I was obviously thinking about my turn a lot during the day. Sometimes I plan my moves, send them, and then think about them some more, and send a new version with significant changes. Still I have a feeling that I have forgot something constantly, like considering a new research option, forging and important item, or just taking gems from the laboratory before departing for the front lines.
BTW when I was telling my daughter her good-night fairy tale, I almost began: "Once upon a time, in a distant and magical land, shrouded with mysteries and ancient secrets, there was a kingdom of decadent, flesh-eating giants who descended from fallen angels..." but I guess she would not sleep so well, so I opted for the traditional repertoire instead
I definitely understand RL getting in the way at times.
Yeah, this is definitely a game that can absorb a lot of your mental processing during the day. Planning the next turn, planning the overall strategy. Modifying those future plans as circumstances change. Studying your nations details. Studying the strengths and weaknesses of your enemies. Diplomatic discussions. It all gets very intense. I have not made it past turn 20 in a game yet, so I am looking forward to seeing what that is like.
Well our armies may be expensive in Abysia, but our PD is, coin-for-coin, the best there is. Marverni is learning as much.
Hinnom! Today we feast on your blood!
I remember when King Louis was a little demon pup, some 300 years ago. I was witness to when he ate his first little markata monkey, such a cute scene it was. He was to be our divine champion, the greatest of the monkey lords, until that accursed Hanan'el took him down with that sword that sword of his! The invasion of Hinnom begins now, and only one of us will come out on the other side.
For King Louis!
Death to Hinnom!

(ooc)
So the conflict with Hinnom begins. To be honest, I'm a bit nervous, as t'is be the first time facing a real human in mortal combat
Will my mythical monkey demons be able to vanquish the dreaded Hinnom Giants? Only time will tell.
TO WAR!!!!
Ah, sad to say that it seems Yomi has left this world. Elana, it was a pleasure playing with you, to the extent that I could, and I hope you will not be discouraged at playing this game again. I would encourage you to give it another chance, at the very least.
(in and out of character)
Yes, Yomi, this game has so many possibilities. You had some misfortune, yes, but there are so many possibilities in this game! You can play as my lovely monkey demons and cry havoc and unleash the dogs of war! Yes, you had the misfortune of having to fight the dreaded Hinnom Giant people, who, in their pride decided to take you out in the beginning, but this need not always be the case. As in statistics they say, you should not judge something by a statistical sample of n=1. Luck may have been your enemy here, but usually that need not be the case! Stay with it, and you may yet be surprised for the better!
