I would recommend trying to read Way of the Kings by Brandon Sanderson. It might be too much fantasy for your taste, though.

I find it interesting to see the ratio of folks who have and have not read the books. Makes the TV conversations interesting.
New trailer!!! So pumped. Hopefully the show's treatment of Stannis will improve this season...
Not long to go now... just a couple of short weeks away and we'll have it back. I'm really looking forward to this season alot, probably more than past seasons because of the build-up of the White Walkers and the amassing of Daenerys Targaryen's army, along with her 3 growing dragons. I see a great clash between them happening there... on her way to reclaiming the iron throne.

Now there was an exercise in futility.... Obama phoning Putin with his concerns over the invasion of Crimea... like Putin actually gives a toss what Obama thinks.
WTF? Stannis burned Alester alive because he was an "infidel?" This shit never happened in the books! I'm surprised they didn't flash a picture of the "Final Solution" or have him shout "Allauh Akbar." I swear D&D are on a character assassination crusade of Stannis...
They may not make it clear enough but Melisandre is the burner and Stannis mostly tolerates the burning. It's like he doesn't approve of it but he's happy to take advantage of God's favor.
Stannis in the books only burned people for treason and cannibalism, NEVER for religious reasons. He is an avowed atheist. The scene tried to turn him into some kind of religious fanatic, which he is not.
No, I don't think Stannis tolerated it for gods, favours or anything else. The look on his face was disgust and an abhorence for what was being done, and the only reason it went ahead is because he fears Melisandre and the powers she possesses. However, Stannis's daughter sees her for who she is and will probably be instrumental in extricating her father from his predicament and/or defeating Melisandre. She's another I want to see get her much desrved come-uppance.

Stannis does not fear Melisandre. He fears nothing. When has he ever expressed fear?
Okay, then, so why does he not stop her committing acts of pure evil... acts he obviously abhors?

Nope... haven't read the books But then I haven't read a book in years due to visual problems associated with vertigo, feelings of motion sickness and migraines..... makes it somewhat difficult to focus/keep my mind on the job. And yes, there are days when I cannot watch television, either.
As for Stannis stopping Melisandre, is that because his desperation and sense of right and wrong overcome his fear of her powers? The reason I ask is because I obviously haven't read the books and, to date in the TV series, Stannis seems to fear Melisandre, knowing the evil she is capable of.
I have to say the brutality of this show never ceases to amaze me. The ending of the episode 8 was once again incredibly gruesome. I am totally used to violence and gore on TV, and usually it does nothing to me - i dont need to cover my eyes in horror - but this is something else. I dont know how they do it. I literally could not stop thinking about it for the next hour after seeing it, just like the Red Wedding last year.
Yes, there are moments of brutality in GOT, but I do not think it is gratuitous/done for the sake of depicting violence. There are episodes with little or no violence, which suggests to me that the producers of the show do not want to overdo it and use violent scenes where necessary, according to the times and the conflicts which arose/may have arisen.
I will say that I am a little disappointed that the Whitewalkers didn't make much of an appearance in this season... and that Daenerys Targaryen only got a few limited scenes confined to managing her latest conquest. I was rather hoping her push toward Kings Landing and the throne would be given a little more priority during the season, but nevertheless, it was a very entertaining season and Joffrey getting his just deserts was the absolute highlight for me... not to mention Tyrion's killing of his father, that was momentus with regard to the power struggle as is unfolds.
Next season will be absolutely riveting, with Stannis Baratheon mounting a challenge for the throne and perhaps aligning with John Snow. I also hope the remaining Stark children play more important roles during next season.
And now the wait begins.
Game of Thrones is so good! I bought all the books so I could find out what happens next! I wish the author would hurry up and get the next book out soon. He does not look too healthy though.
