Greetings!
First, thank you everyone who in previous journal entries who have submitted questions to be answered. Anything that reduces my work load makes me happy. Frankly, eating and breathing on my own is a continuing resentment.
So let’s dive right in:
Q: Does the Gamestop acqusition of Impulse affect the free expansions to the Elemental universe customers of War of Magic were promised?
A: Not in the slightest. Stardock Entertainment is a separate business (Stardock Entertainment, Inc.) from Impulse (Impulse, Inc.).
Q: Where does War of Magic stand?
A: We’re still working on v1.2 of it. Without getting too technical, the memory issues that the game has boil down to what is called heap fragmentation. Sins of a Solar Empire pre-allocates its memory and then dishes it out from there. Elemental: War of Magic grows and shrinks in real-time. Over time, memory becomes fragmented and eventually a block can’t be allocated. There are differences between Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 on how this is handled as well as very different effects based on how much memory is on a given video card and the driver model in question. Suffice to say, that’s why v1.2 is taking awhile is that we really want to do it right.
Q: What happens to War of Magic after v1.2?
A: v1.3 is being developed concurrently with v1.2. That’s because v1.3 is pure features so v1.2’s delays don’t affect that. It just means that v1.3 will come out a lot closer after v1.2 than originally planned.
Q: If Fallen Enchantress is in development, why continue with War of Magic?
A: There’s a lot of mundane reasons. But when the beta program for Fallen Enchantress starts, users are going to quickly realize that Fallen Enchantress isn’t an expansion pack. It’s like like Dark Avatar was to GalCiv II. It’s radically different. The second reason is that War of Magic has a lot of potential to continue into the future on its own track. The third reason is just because we like working on it. Our games are labors of love.
Q: When will Fallen Enchantress be done?
A: We don’t have a set complete time. The full team is working on FE right now other than myself and my mini team which is working on v1.2/v1.3. We are not going to have an early public beta of Fallen Enchantress. Its beta will come out largely feature complete. So right now, it’s likely to be a Fall 2011 thing but it could be later. The requirement for Fallen Enchantress is it won’t be released until we are certain it be an overwhelmingly positive experience for our customers. To that end, we have eliminated as many conflicts to that objective such as sacrificing a retail date for it.
Q: Are the hardware requirements for Fallen Enchantress going to be the same as War of Magic?
A: Fallen Enchantress will use Pixel Shader 3 instead of Pixel Shader 2. One of the reasons for this is because Pixel Shader 2 drastically restricted the amount of environmental texturing we could do (i.e. brown brown brown) in Elemental: War of Magic. In Fallen Enchantress, we want the world to be visually much more enchanting and interesting and not be restricted by a hardware requirement (the current pixel shader version is v5.0 to put things in perspective). DirectX 9c is still the standard used here.
Q: Any news on the modding front?
A: Yes. Jon Shafer and I have been working on the mini-campaigns for Elemental: Destiny’s Embers. And so as we work on those we uncover weaknesses in the modding tools that we have been trying to get addressed which in turn should make modding even easier in the future.
Hmm, I actually liked that rant.
Don't agree with it, but I can see where you are coming from.
While we're on the topic, I don't understand why it takes so damn long to build a house. I finalized the blueprints two weeks ago, and it's still not done! How hard is it to cut some boards and put some nails into them? Come on guys, it's not rocket science!
And I don't understand why it's taken the Pirates so damn long to win another World Series. They've had decades! It's not like they don't know what they need to do. Fix your pitching, up your batting averages, and get some good outfielders! If I was in charge, I would have fired everyone ten years ago and started over.
And Jesus, I expected to have a flying car by now! Come on, they were drawing these things 40 years ago! How hard is it to put some wings onto the chassis and maybe a propeller in front. Airplanes can fly? The entire automobile industry should be ashamed of themselves.
This has to be sarcastic.. right?
I mean... this post isn't actually serious.. is it?
I do want my jet packs, flying cars, and laser weapons.
why have that... when we could have... SPACE PONIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The flying car has been around for some time. Heres a Molt Talyor Aerocar (circa 1956) (price reduced to just 2.2 Million!)
The Terrafugia is expected to hit the market sometime this year.
It'll cost less than $200,000 and only requires a Sport Pilot license.
Personal airborne transport has been in the works since before air planes were invented. Specifically some guy in France thought everyone should have a personal zephylin type thing.
wow such fanboys i love the rants over valid questions they dont see how silly they are or how silly they try to change the topic so that further questions arent going in
i would love to see some updates about WoM 1.2 even. I own the game i have no plans to buy FE, if there is WoM waiting for some love. Thats why i dont want news for FE but for WoM please.
The problem why everything is taking as long as it is, is they are doing three things at once. Yes, I understand that the poster wants them to take all their energy and put it toward fixing this game. But just because its his opinion, it doesn't make it valid. Also, WoM was really fucked when released. Lots of problems. Am I disappointed that it is taking so long, yes I am. Am I concerned that the changes that I think need to be addressed, are not going to be made. Yes I am. But that's just my opinion, I don't think my own opinion is that valid, as I am a poor judge of what time and energy these kind of changes take AND my opinion of what should be changed may not actually be best. Just because we believe something does not make it right. I post what I think needs changed, I post what I do and don't like about the game, and hope that it is read and considered.
The thing is, all we can do is wait and see. Just because we poke a little fun at a rant, doesn't make us fanboys. And just because we some times rant against the game, doesn't make us trolls. Lets try and be reasonable. Now, if 1.3 comes out, and I am greatly disappointed, be sure to know that I will rant and rave with mighty nerd-rage of biblical proportions. But, until then, I wait.
You have wisdom beyond your years, Lord Xia!
I find it funny that people now want them to rush the fixes for one of the most rushed games in the history of gaming.
And whatever WoM will look like in the end, it will still just be make-up on a pig. FE has the potential of being awesome, WoM has not, so I think they are doing the right thing by focusing on FE.
Yes Lord Xia its true what you say so i will take back my comment with the fanboys.
But that is just wrong i have buy the game WoM i had some playruns but the memory leaks are horrible for me i just want to enjoy a game that i buy for the full prize because i trust Stardock! Even if it was in no good shape at the start i trust Stardock to patch it to make it great, but my patience is running out. Its also the lack of information since the 4th april no timeframe for even 1.2
If FE will be great ( a big if for me) it will also be a lot of time in the works to make it so, but i want to play WoM until then. The Changes for 1.2 and 1.3 sound great but i dont know when they will be here for us
Well, it seems I stirred up the pot on my rant. Yes folks I am aware that somethings take longer then others. I agree that somethings that were promised to the consumers long ago haven't been made available yet. Ie, FLYING CARS. As to what constitutes a good sports team I have no idea. But sports really are a poor comparison for programming. The reason I posted the way I did is because I have earned a degree in programming and have modded many Stardock games in the past. I know how they lay out their programs and from my own experience know how hard and how long it takes to make a game. The problem is rarely the code, it usually is the producers (ie the money behind it), and marketing pushing things forward before their time. My primary points were that they should have given more time to this project, that people have paid for, and still doesn't work. My rant is about buying something that should have provide me with entertainment and instead upped my blood pressure. Image buying a new car, driving off the lot, and it breaks down immediately. You tell the dealer and he say "Hey we are gonna work on that for you, no problem", you think great, they will get this done and I will be on my way. You ask, "How many days will this take to fix once you id the problem?" They say: "Well, we are looking at about 6-8 months to get it fixed." WHAT!?!?! The dealer then says: "But wait, we have a new car coming out real soon that will be better then this model" Dumbfounded, you look at him and say, "But I paid for this one in full already." "Yea, about that, well ya see, we will get around to it and keep you posted. We are also gonna hire a new mechanic to fix it up for you but we think he needs to work on the new car first. okay." Usually at this point most folks would punch the dealer in the nose and demand your money back. But hey we can always wait a few more months for that flying car, right? And who knows, maybe the Pirate will have their act together by then too, wouldn't that be Swell! Guess what, I hear they know can put a house fully together within a day! Yep that is right. pre-manufactured parts. That is a no shitter. And along those lines most code has previously been coded into a library and so you don't have to recoded stuff each time, thus making things faster and easier. You can even make your our library so you reuse previous code, wow, cool huh! Most problems come form the math. Yep, guess you really did need math after all. My frustration is I paid for a product, expecting it to work, and it didn't. As Lord Xia has said, this is my opinion. I post stuff in hope that the Dev team will read it. Their will always be those that think someone opinion is to strong, politically incorrect, or wrong because they cousin's friend's brother's girlfriend know differently. I am fully aware that there smarter people in the world then me. Stardock being one of them as they are in business and making money. I, as the consumer, just want them to fix my problem they created.
you need more sentence breaks there... your wall o' text kills the eyes
example
sentence paragraphs
break line being you pressing enter at least once
next sentence paragraphs
next break line
notice how I have spaces in between each of those?
yes I just schooled you in proper post layout format that won't kill a post readers eye sight
Edit: god damn... I'm on a roll today with being sarcastic must be my mood lol
Yea, I couldn't bare the wall of text, so it went unread.
Most of what bugs me about EWoM is bugs of varying severity, and technical details, not feature-set or high-level design decisions. With FE using the same engine and (probably) a lot of the same other code, I fear that FE will have the same issues later if they don't fix them FIRST in EWoM and then port the clean code.
Besides crashes & OOMs (and related issues like not being able to load a game while in the game because it leads to crashes), my issues are
1: Out-of-order messages and other events (come on, Devs, "out of order execution" is a good thing in processor design, but not in a game).
2: Failure to update some of the info that shows on the screen when it is out of date.
3: Slow animations, especially for mounted archers.
4: Inability to exit from said slow animations. Whoops, now I'm getting into something that might actually be a deliberate design decision, so its time to quit.
Yeah, sorry... just having a bit of fun with you. I think that most people here would even agree with you, myself included. It's just that we've all got most of the bitching out of our systems already. At some point, everything that had to be said about the state of the game, has been said about the state of the game, and it's time to move on.
To address your point directly, I'm sure that the actual game code is quite a bit more complicated than what they've laid out for end-user modification, so having experience modding the game probably isn't a good metric with which to judge major revisions by.
