Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols over at ZDNet summed it up pretty neatly for me and revealed problems and vulnerabilities which I didn’t know about.
Quoting just the highlights (see the review for details):
Operating system incompatibilities: XP is ignored. Whether it’s a dinosaur or not, it’s one of MS’s OS’s and this, to me at least, just isn’t playing fair.
Performance: FF4 betas and Chrome outperform it on the majority of benchmarks. Heck, Opera 11 seems faster to me, also.
The 64-bit version of IE 9 is second-rate. It’s slower that the 32 bit version. What does MS say? “The majority uses x32.” Well, x64 folks matter less? Good to know.
Lack of Security: While more secure than ie8, it’s far from secure. See the review for details. Basically? The Tracking thing is spotty, and the way it handles plug-ins (the fave attack point of hackers) does not warn the way it should when using an outdated plug-in. That’s a major vulnerability.
Lack of Compatibility: So you use “Compatibility”. So, you’re using a prior form of rendering. So much for the hype.
That’s why I’m pretty disappointed. Also? It doesn’t look all that good, at least to me. So I’m sticking with Chrome and FF and Opera.
Doc.... a 'Revue' is what the Can-can is .....
You're thinking of 'review' ....
True....not even the doc is immune to Jafo. Wrong metaphor, though, Jafo: ie9 does the Can't-can't.
I agree with Doc. IE9 can't can't. It still won't open the damn web page.
The whole set of MS 2011 Live is a miserable failure. I am now looking for a new messenger, email and sync software.

THIS is what happens when you use voice rec.
I don't mind IE9, but I do hate the fact that Ms decided to ignore XP users. Like IE6 before it, the entire web is now going to be held back because Microsoft can't be bothered to support an operating system that they can't seem to kill off. If they want to kill off XP, do so, but keep the web out of it. Killing XP is less important than preventing the web from stagnating. Knowing that Microsoft's online presence is basically non-existent makes me question if this was a more deliberate move...

No, Karen.... THIS is. https://forums.wincustomize.com/406377
Absolutely!
Funny, I tried downloading the 64bit version yesterday, was stuck on about 20% for about 5 minutes. I canceled the download and about 5 minutes later a warning came up that IE9 did not download properly. Even the warnings are slow to respond. LOL. Thanks for the heads up, won't even bother giving it a try now. Am already considering switching to Chrome. Once I can get it to feel more comfortable, how I feel with FF, then I should be able to switch over.
I hear pidgin and trillian are great alternatives. cant say for sure since I don't really use msg programs much. As for email Thunderbird is a great alternative to outlook and so is incredimail (if you dont mind all the eye candy and animations that is). As for the sync option, not sure about that one. I'm sure someone here can give a good alternative.
meh, I haven't used IE in months. Been using FF and don't see myself going back to IE for any. reason. at. all.
When are yall gonna get it? XP isn't supported by MS anymore, or soon won't be. Everyone else should follow suit.
Good points all, but the above is my favorite.
And so is DOS, but I do not see anyone complaning that it is not supported. It is part of the OS lifecycle, eventually the API for the old versions is so lacking in features compared to the new ones that it no longer makes sense to target it. If they had supported XP then it would likely have more and worse problems that it does.
As it uses DirectX for hardware accelerated graphics, I would not be suprised if at least one reason was so they could use DirectX 10 and up (the DirectX 11 API makes it easier to support machines that can only use DX 9 or 10).
The problem is the other browsers do support XP. As users upgrade their computers they will select a browser that they are familiar with. Microsoft will find it hard to bring people back if they are unwilling to support users of the web.
And what does it matter? It is not like the people that use browsers pay for them. And last I here IE (of various versions) was so dominate there was a ruling by the EU that MS had to ship other browsers with Windows install discs (or something like that).
The fact is most users will not go out and get another browser or upgrade IE even when the option is availible. They will just continue using what they already have as long as using something else would require extra effort.
The ruling was about creating a fair market, not dominance.
Browsers in the EU
If no one upgrades then IE9 has no chance
You are thinking of this as a market, which it is not as no purchases are made. The only thing that will really impact what gets used is what webpages support, and what is currently being shipped with the OS people are buying.
And IE was dominant, otherwise the fact that it was packaged with Windows would have been a non-issue. The fact is people were not going out and getting other browsers because they do not care enough about which is the best to go out and get others. Hence people that get Windows 8 will use IE 9.
IE9 was working OK. Thurned the computer off to go out came back turned it back on and loaded IE9.
I have the icon in the taskbar and a thumbnail view but can't find it anywhere on my desktop. It's open but not visable so what the hell is up with that. I tried to install again but it said I already had the latest version. So I have IE9 but can't use it because I can't see it.
Seems a lot of people are having problems with Microstuff's new browser. You can't see yours. Mine won't open web pages. Some new browser, huh. If I could uninstall it I would. In a heartbeat.
Drag the iexplore.exe to your taskbar or desktop (shortcut).
Uvah, you should be able to uninstall IE 9 and it should go back to IE 8.
I'm not having any problems with IE 9. Are you talking about your laptop again Uvah?
Dave do you have 'Show The Desktop' selected by chance?
Maybe I didn't explain it correctly. IE opens and the icon shows in the taskbar. If I highlight the taskbar icon I can see the thumbnail of my home page so IE is open. It will not show on my desktop.
So I uninstalled IE9 and went back to IE8 and now haveing the same problem. Figured at this point I would install IE9 again. Still the same problem. My Opera works fine but would still like to be able to use IE at times.
UVAH - you can uninstall IE9 and go back to IE8 if you want.
UVAH - If you want to uninstall IE9 here is a link with instructions.
