I meant I edited the missions so the craft was available for them, not added the fighter to the game.
The TIE Defender is one of my most favorite starfighters of all time, though the T-65 X-wing starfighter and the RZ-1 A-wing interceptor will always have a special place in my heart.
Oh lol. I spent most of my time online or in the simulator so that wasn't an issue. All I really remember of the campaign was your character had a cool YT series transport.
Tie fighter is one of best Star Wars games ever. Interesting missions, great gameplay and a lot of fun! I would love to see remake of this game.
I always thought the Tie Defender was a little over the top. Felt a bit Monty Hallish.
I never even knew what a TIE Defender was until I read the Rogue Squadron/Wraith Squardon X-Wing quintets. It's been so long since I've read any Star Wars. I stopped reading when the New Jedi Order books started coming out. Just ran out of time.
Rogue/Wraith Squadron series, specifically Isard's Revenge, is when I learned about the TIE Defender too. It is a shame the TIE Defender has stolen the show in appearances in the EU from its little known predecessor, the TIE Avenger, I am rather fond of both craft; discovering a TIE, well actually two, that struck fear and garnered respect from Alliance pilots was a pleasure. As you can probably guess, I like starfighters.
Yes, i can remember these great games and how much fun i had with them.
Damn, now i'm feeling old again...
I still have all those games . . some on floppies.
I spent hours playing. I belonged to a group on Compuserve where we wrote and traded mission. There were squadrons for every flying style and ship. I even commanded an a-wing squad, call sign "lurker-1"I remember having to avoid telling my then girlfriend how much I spent on the thrustmaster flightstick I bought just to play this game (instead of something pretty for her).
Behind me as I type there are the strategy guides for X-Wing and Tie fighter. Both were written as novels with mission descriptions. Next to them is the tie-fighter baseball cap I got from some premium send-away.
What a great series that generated so many friends and so much fun. I've wondered what it would take to play them again and if they would even be any fun. I guess the first step would be to find a flightstick (that I would have to hide from my wife ).
Thanks for the memories.
That was what I thought too. My favorite was the TIE Advanced (or "Avenger"). It was fast and strong, but fit with the other ships. The TIE Defender was so insanely overpowered that in the expansions you started single handily taking on entire fleets including capital ships.
Then they gave you the Missile Boat, which was really more of a flying rocket launcher.
We have Thrawn to thank for the Missile Boat, and warhead-based firepower is an interesting design choice.
Exactly my feeling. It's like they threw every capability from all the other ships into a single, then gave it enough power to do every thing it wanted. If I recall, it was faster than the TIE advanced, it had more power, stronger shields, and more missiles. Combined with the ion cannons, it could accomplish any role of any other piece, and do it better, and get down with enough time left over for snacks, and drinks.
As for the MB, it was interesting. I could see it's place in the arsenal though. When flying the X-Wing though, I liked shooting the things down. They turned like pregnant cows and had a huge target profile. It's when there were a bunch of them and their buddies had their back that they became a problem. Talk about the great concussion missile shoot-out.
Here's the big question though, free fire, twin linked, or quad linked cannons. One reason I liked the A-Wing so much was center lined cannon - twin-linked.
X-Wing Alliance = Best Space Fighting Sim ever, period!
(Yes, my opinion is very-very biased, but why should I care, LOL!!!)
One of the best games of all times..
