I have sid meier's civ4 complete.
ROM 2.92 one download, complete, (-ie not an earlier version of ROM, patched to 2.92).
I could not get ROM to run even when I followed both 'fixes' stated in the 'CvAltRoor' =py file, opened with notepad. I then tried various places for the CvAltroot file, and finally got ROM to run, but there is no screen interface. The keyboard commands work, some of the function keys bring up menus. But no screen interface, and no mouse over info...
BTW, when I load ROM mod, from BtS (properly patched as per instructions) I get the warlords graphic screen, but ROM actually loads, and the little text window also says “Rise of Mankind.” ROM runs fine, and plays, but no intereface/mouseover info.
I have tried placing the CvAltRoot=py document in various places, (see below) and in various combinations of these places... some combinations don't work, some get me the ROM running fine except there is no interface on the main screen, and no mouse over info.
--------------
Paths in civ4 complete as auto installed on my XP PC.
C:/Documents and Settings/[elana]/My Documents/My Games/beyond the sword/
(( many folders and files, including civ4.ini, and civ4 =config ))
(( /mods folder = empty))
(( /custom assets/python has cvaltroot= py))
C:/Program files/2k games/ firaxis games/ /sid meier's civilization 4 complete/
((
( 8 x folders here)
… /mods = 4x folders: 'tutorial' 'desert war' 'Greek world' and American revolution.' and
… /beyond the sword/mods = 'afterworld ... all standard mods with BtS … 'broken star'
also … /FfH2 (works fine), and Rise of mankind/ CvAltRoot=py … /assets/python/ ...CvAltRoot=py
and .../beyond the sword/assets/python... CvAltRoot=py
(9 x folder shortcuts, mostly to' _viv4xxx' here) and
(10 x Dll xxx here) (5 xpdf = English manual) and
...(readme) (civ4.mcl) ('civ 4 mce' = xml doc) and
...(civ4 on top of capitol/pillar = pitboss) and
...(civ4 on top of capitol/pillar = firaxis games)
and …
( ' _civ4 config' = shortcut) shortcut goes to: “sid meier's civilization 4 complete, civ4.ini”
))
since the standard locations of CvAltRoot=py haven’t worked, and various combos of the above haven't worked, what do I do now?
Thank you, danke, gracias, toda raba, … elana

## CvAltRoot
##
## Tells Rise of Mankind where to locate its files when it cannot find them normally.
## This is common when using the /AltRoot Civ4 feature or sometimes on
## non-English operating systems and Windows Vista.
## HOW TO USE
## 1. Change the text in the quotes below to match the full path to the
## "Beyond the Sword" folder that contains the CivilizationIV.ini file.
## Make sure to use forward slashes (/), even for Windows paths.
## Windows XP: "C:/Documents and Settings/[UserName]/My Documents/My Games/Beyond the Sword"
## C:/Documents and Settings/elana/My Documents/My Games/sid meier's civilization 4
## 2. Copy this file to the "Python" folder.
## When Rise of Mankind is installed as a mod, the folder is "Assets/Python".
## Note!
## if above method doesn't help, locate the "Beyond the Sword" installation folder.
## This location is not in the documents folders, instead it's usually in
## "Program Files" ie. "C:/Program Files/Firaxis/Sid Meier's Civilization 4/Beyond the Sword"
## The folder usually contains "_Civ4config" shortcut (on Windows systems). Once you have
## located this folder, follow the step 2 again. Usually when [username] in above examples
## contains non-english letters you will have to use the installation folder location.

Hi MattsSan, thanks for link to civ fanatics. However, I have already been through that forum with a fine tooth comb, and posted for help there. No replies there, (its a somewhat inactive forum these days...).
Thats why i posted here, many active gamers who also play FfH2, SMAC, etc.... Appreciate the try...
No idea.. the version of rom i run is 2.8 without issue. Try downloading the older version would be my suggestion.
Looking at the links for both i notice that 2.92 is about half the size of 2.8... maybe its meant to be an update or something.
And just so you know.. ALL the files should be in the BTS mods folder.. in a folder marked Rise of mandkind or rom. Placing them in different folders are likely to cause issues. For instance for me all the ROM files are in C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Rise of Mankind.
This line "When Rise of Mankind is installed as a mod, the folder is "Assets/Python". assumes its in your mod folder IE C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Rise of Mankind\Assets\Python
C:/Documents and Settings/elana/My Documents/My Games/sid meier's civilization 4.. needs to point to your civ IV BTS ini.. not your vanilla civ IV INI. You should have a Beyond the sword folder there to point to rather than the vanilla civ 4 folder.
Without being to experiment myself with the issue (i dont have the complete version) my best advice would be to make sure the files you point to are the BTS versions NOT the vanilla civ Versions and make sure the ROM folder is properly installed into your mods folder in the program files BTS path.
If you can't get it to work then try the Legends of Revolutions mod complete instead.
will try ver 2.8......
thought i found ver 2.8 of ROM. was 2.91 instead. 2.8 takes me to a site (atomic gamer) that doesn't have it anymore. So, i guess ver 2.8 is not available anymore.
i will try to uninstall the old patch and reinstall the 'same' patch downloaded form a different place. LOL.
I've done everything both you, and the doc said to do. next step will be to reinstall civ, and not put in FfH2. Maybe FfH2 (which has a self installer - and runs fine) changed something the ROM is needing? or, perhaps, it just isn't a mod that is friendly / robust enough .. I'm not stupid, i have followed the directions...
Ok, i've spent over 8 hours trying to get it to run. I can get it to run, but without an interface. I've done ** exactly ** what you, and the forum have said to do. back up was ver 2.8 - i cannot find a link to ver 2.8 that actually goes to a place where it actually is available. So, I guess its not going to happen. Thanks again.
found the 2.8 hidden under turrent...
Step 1 - Download the 445MB Full version of 2.92 Latest version
Step 2 - Extract the .rar - It contains the "Rise of Mankind" directory
Step 3 - Copy the "Rise of Mankind" directory to c:\Blah Blah\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword\Mods
Where Blah Blah is Usually "Program Files" or some such.
Run Civ IV and choose to play Rise of Mankind mod from the selection screen. It should restart the game and load in the mod.
For me it works as is with no modifications. If this doesn't work then you probably have borked your install, or there are Administrator issues.
To solve all these :
- Uninstall Civ IV (I know - Sad Panda ) Preferably using something like REVO Uninstaller to remove all the bollocks left over in the registry.
- Reinstall but choose a location manually IN YOUR USER DIRECTORY. (I am running Vista - Don't know the default XP user dir)
ie I chose C:\Users\<username>\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete
- Copy Rise of Mankind into C:\Users\<username>\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete\Beyond the Sword\Mods
Now you bypass all the crap associated with needing Admin rights etc etc. I have no problems with this method and saves a LOT of hassles with windows crap.
- Run Rise of Mankind !
If this still doesn't work, then maybe Rise of Mankind 2.92 has bugs! Or doesn't work with your video card. Who knows?
Edit: PPS I did not touch any files, nor did I alter CvAltRoot.py. I just run it straight as is.
Hi mattson, Thanks for reply. Thank you - happy to know people will help when they can!
I'm on XP so no adm issues.
v2.8 seemed ok. But ctd after about 300 turns, in three games i tried. I patched v2.8 to v2.81. Runs fine. No problems, I'm in the classical era.
So I have it running now.
re: v2.92, i did follow steps # 1-3, and there was no interface. Seemd to 'play' ok, otherwise. If I ever go to v2.92, and it happens again, i will go the ctrl-alt-O and see if BUG will allow me to turn the interface on - yes it could be the install just set it to 'off,' and a manual turn the interface **might *** fix the problem. Who knows...
I did not bork the 2.92 install. The Civfanatcis forum said the missing interface was an issue on some PCs. It suggested using the CvAltRoot (name?) to fix it. I used it, in both places it suggested, and it didn't fix it. @.8 is good enough for now.
Please tell me about the 'revo' uninstaller... sounds like it might be easier than an uninstall, the running ccleaner, and reinstalling? What is your experience, please. Thanks again mattason.
Here is a link to Revo Uninstaller.
Ignore the professional version - unless you pay for it you will get trialware. Just download the freeware version.
Works great. Whenever you want to uninstall something, just start up Revo and it brings up a list with all your programs installed.
- Then click the program you want to uninstall
- It brings up a box asking you what type of uninstall mode you want - I always select Advanced mode. This searches through your registry automatically for all links to the software
- Let it uninstall, and then it brings up a list of all the registry entries that the uninstall program missed. Be careful, however, when deleting those entries - check and recheck before deleting any. Sometimes more than one software will use similar registry entries. So if you are unsure about any entries - leave them alone!
- Then exit and all is good in the world!
I thought maybe that Civ4 might be worth trying again for the mods, once the Civ4 went into the bargain bin. Looks like it probably wouldn't be worth the effort now. Being only Civ4, no great loss, anyway.
mattson. thanks been using rev uninstaller for a month now. you were exactly right. its a great litttle program. Thanks
kindest regards, elana
