I’m the anti-packrat. That is, I don’t keep stuff. I’m not living anything like a zen existence but I don’t like to keep “clutter”. However, I do keep things that I form some sort of attachment to. Clearly, I’d never make a good Jedi.
Considering the number of moves I’ve made over the years, the threshold of importance to keep it through these moves would have to be pretty high.
Here’s something that has made the moves: The Balance of power 1990 manual. I have it “just in case” I play Chris Crawford’s classic game again with it’s crazy copy protection.
I played it on the Amiga (both original and 1990) and again on the PC. A truly classic game.
Do you have a game that fits this description?
Which one?
Funny that you mention this because were moving!
I have a big box full of game manuals, boxes, the works... Age of Empires, Battlezone, Homeworld, Deus Ex, Stronghold, Rebellion... omg these manuals are huge! Ya I can't remembering the important ones at the moment with the CD keys on the cases or manuals. None of them as old are yours I bet...
Ya I am also managing to throw lots of stuff out too. Still cleaning the garage tomorrow... hopefully we finish it.
Most of our wives already tossed out the good stuff.
Somehow, a copy of dungeon keeper has made it with every move so far.
I have the mistakenly printed orange UT2003 manual. I'll never get rid of that.
Just finally got rid of my Darklands manual, and I'm pretty sure that was the only thing I still cared about from the early days.
I had two copies of the original Sid Meirer's Pirates circa 1986. 360K Floppy Diskette, manuals, and maps.
Wife tossed them in the last move!
[edit] but I still have original board games Axis & Allies, Shogun, and Fortress: America.
God willin' and the creek don't rise, I'm never losing those!
Being the first games I ever played, I'd have to go with the first two Command and Conquer games. I still boot them up once in a while.
Lords of the Realm II
One of my favorite games of all time. I still break it out once in awhile to get my fix.
I think we still have the floppys for Quest for Glory I (VGA remake), and a number of those old sierra games. Monkey Island maybe? I haven't seen them in a bit, but they should still be around somewhere.
It's probably nostalgia, but for me, nothing can beat Quest for Glory. I boot it up periodically.
I have the master of orion and master of orion II manuals
The one I am most attached to is the Battle Isle II manual. It has these perfect pictures of each unit in the game Those were the days
Just 2 days ago I found a copy (!) of my old Elite manual (played it on my C64). For a short moment I considered throwing it away but could withstand the attempt effectively
I can still recall the moment my father came home from work an handed me this jewel besides playing it countless days.
I still own those Warlords II floppy disks for my old Mac (Performa 630). The machine is long gone though...
Mine would have to be Ultima IV, V & VII boxes (for some reason I never bought or played VI) with manuals and the assorted trinkets, I have so many good memories of those games, makes me feel all warm inside when I open them up, I think I also still have some of the notepads I used to scribble down clues and such whilst playing.
Hmm. eight replies and no one has been able to answer your question (or simply forgot to do so). Unfortunately, this is number nine and I don't have an answer for you either; as I'm not familiar with the game.
I do regret selling my Commodore 128D and the Hard Drive I had for it. Every time I go to the Casino (for the all you can eat seafood buffet; not to gamble), I pass the Arctic Fox slot machine and remember the Arctic Fox tank game I used to play on the Commodore.
I also wish that Privateer 2 would run on the newer PC's, but Microsoft is really good at makling all the great games obsolete. Unless I dust off an old PC, I can no longer play Outpost, Harpoon II, Space Bucks nor numerous other games that I used to spend hours enjoying.
Oh, well. I hope someone is finally able to answer your question soon.
SK
I didn't get a computer until I was in my 20's, so I can't go as far back as you guys can. But I do have some PC games that I always go back to and protect with a vengeance. Alpha Centauri might be my favorite game of all time, and then the games Arcanum and Planescape:Torment. Just fantastic games. Now if you want to know some NES GAmes that have survived the years, moves, fires, etc, I could talk more about that.
-. Knights of Legends - original C64 game in it's original box... cant get rid of it, just in case i'll ever go back to playing c64 again
-. MechForce - Amiga (wow talk about favorites, I still carry around printouts of my mech configurations, just in case... Funny as this was also the very first piece of shareware I ever encountered, it was never fully finished I think as FASA interfered or something cant really remember. Still know the programmers name by head... Ralph Reed)
live changing games, hmm... hold on lol...
Avalon - a PBM (play by mail (thats snail mail folks)) fantasy game originally developed by an english company that went bankrupt but further extended and developed by a Dutch company named the PBM Express (now sells collectible merchanise as far as I can tell). I still own all maps I made for that game and all my turn printouts lol (100 players per game), managed to win the very first game of that after 3 years of playing lol. Ended up working for the company as a GM (gamemaster) running games like railroad tycoon and SuperNova pbm games.
Genre wise, games I played to death and would still play today (heh they still get me all giddy just thinking about them);
-. Settlers - C64 (ended upgrading to Amiga to get a more stable version of it)
-. UFO: Enemy Defense - Amiga (lovvvvvvvved the tactical AI and setting of the game)
-. Civilization - Amiga (ended up upgrading to PC to get more stable version of it, loved the xbox 360 remake Civilization Revolution)
-. Rogue - PC-XT
-. Command & Conquer - PC (discovered this game whilst backpacking through Australia, ended up playing in pay per hour for pc usage shops all throughout Australia, never got into later versions of it when back home we also reverted back to C&C:Gold untill RA2 came out, been steady top 10 player in the world for that for over it's first year).
-. Railroad Tycoon (Sid Meier) - PC
-. Rollercoaster Tycoon - PC
-. Megalomania - Amiga
-. Settlers of Catan - Xbox360 (still play that on a daily bases, ranked 28th in the world as i write this)
-. Battlefield: Bad Company - xbox360 (finally a shooter I like)
-. I also enjoyed my share of point and click adventures, but dissed them all once i played through it once, titles that spring to my head are Sam & Max hit the road, day of the tentacles, euhrm the 4 cdrom PC movie like game where you played a detective (was it Full Moon?) and many many more.
Trip to memory lane heh...
Edit: totally forgot Dark Age of Camelot... have all the expansions, manuals, guides and even software tools and havent played it in years (best pvp game ever).
I still hold onto my Total Annihilation manual.
Ummm. I still cling to my original GalCiv jewel case and manual. And along with that, I have a secret stash that includes (must protect these things from the enemy..err wife.):Freespace series disks and manuals.KOTOR I&IIJumpgateCiv II and Civ IIIStar Trek: Klingon AcademyWing Commander ProphecyFinally, Star Trek Pinball...I don't know why.
I have in mint condition, manuals for all the wing commander games, including armada. Love those games, one of these days will get around to putting them on a vm.
But a game I grew up on, and so rare is not even funny is Parsec for the old ti994a by texas instruments. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZgFAgmJkiE
And the ancient art of war, and ancient are of war at sea. Love those games, and to this day the ai on the hardest difficulty will still kick my ass. In fact still own both, with boxes, manuals, disks, everything, and in great condition. Game is as old as I am.
"Damn fools, they all want to be king!"
"My lord?"
"Theyed have the country in ruins before choosing a successor! I have more right to rule than those two!"
"There will be dark days ahead..."
I still remember sitting at work being bored. Checked out the web and there was a review for Total Annihilation. Since I normally prefere TBS to RTS I bought it out of pure boredom. I now have this gem on my all time top list:
1. CIV IV2. Total Annihilation / Master of Orion II
3. Battle Isle II / III
I have all the original floppies of Kings Quest I to V.
Lords of the Realm I to III.
Games I got with my brand new Pentium 100Mhz: Inherit the Earth, Hammer of the Gods, Lords of the Realm, Delta V, and Zephyr.
Master of Orion 3 Strategy Guide.
There's prolly more, but that's what comes to mind.
Did you like Lords of the Realm III? It was crap in my opinion. Lords of the realm was good , but the second one is by far the best of the series.
I tend to agree about Lords III. Though number one holds the nostalgia cup, due to countless hours of single screen multiplayer with family and cousins, and late into the nights and early mornings.
Some memorable quotes:
"Listen, you look like a toad! No on second thoughts, that's unfair to toads. You look worse!".
"Trebuchet fires at castle." (only because it's been burned into my consciousness).
A message from the Earl: "My realm grows. My ancient right to rule the land will soon be restored to me."
A message from the Bishop: "I foretold of your folly. These lands rightfully belong to the church. And I will have them."
I had those last two as my sms tones for a while. It was funny seeing peoples weird reactions.
I am a pack rat. Seriously. Every book I've ever bought (some 600), every game I've ever bought - even back to the old 386 - I've kept around.. almost.
A few years ago I did throw a lot. Not as much as I should, but a lot.
And yes, I do remember the old balance of power game. I also have the books that inspired the game.
(The Balance of Power, by The International Institute for Strategic Studies, yearly publication of interest for anyone connected with the military - and for grognards. ).
That publication is now called, perhaps more correctly, 'The Military Balance', showcasing the decline in the importance of military power compared to economical.

I cant remember the name of it, but it was an SSI game about the Guadalcanal battles that is from around the mid-90's. Played all the campaigns and scenarios and then cracked the data files and began modding the specs on the ships and aircraft to better match their real life counterparts. No longer have the game, but I still think I have the manual boxed away somewhere. This game was probably the first computer game I really dived into and set me on the road to computer gaming addiction ruin.
I can't say that I have any computer games that I *need* to keep around...
I have quite a few that I *have* kept around, but that's different.
The main keepsake for me at this point is my 2600. I have it packed neatly away in a box down in the basement (off of the floor) along with a pair of Epyx 500xj joysticks and 54 games (along with the switch set-up I bought to run it on today's tv's).
Who could part with something like that?
