Hi, a few years ago I really enjoyed playing Imperium Galactica 2, which was a 4X RTS game. I read that SoaSE is also a 4X RTS game, and was wondering how it compares to IG2. Also, are there any other games out there that are similar to IG2?
Lately I spent way too much time playing SC, SupCom, and SC2, and I feel a need to play some more complex games with a little less micro, for relaxation.
Thanks,RMSe17
There's a fair bit of difference, however I've only played the base game of SoaSE. Imperium Galactica 2 has a little more depth in terms of non-combat options, though it's combat is still decent it can't really compare to SoaSE which has more depth there. IG2 also had the SimCity aspect, which SoaSE kind of lacked and ultimately planet development became a bit of a bore - at least in my opinion - compared to what IG2 offers. IG2 also had it's campaign story intersecting the events of your game, making it feel more like an Epic Sci-Fi story. SoaSE lacks any story in any form.In terms of finding another IG2, there really aren't too many options. IG3 basically imploded, and became something else entirely, feel free to take a look - I haven't played it myself.
As the above poster mentioned, there is a fair bit of difference.
Sins of a Solar Empire has no campaign, for example. Meanwhile, Imperium Galactica 2 is a shining example of how a 4x game should do a singleplayer campaign (ie like Alpha Centauri).
Sins of a Solar Empire is more of an RTS with 4x elements, but is completely worth your buying dollars. It looks great and is quite addictive despite the lack of a reasonable campaign. I'm no pro at the game, but your comment about micro is apt for Sins. I'm sure mp addicts will tell you there is tons, but the most I've done in that game is position a Capital ship to more effectively deliver broadsides. Oh yes, there's also a retreat button, so you can more easily pull units away from combat with less clicks (shift+r).
So yes, it compares favorably to IG2, but it has *no* campaign.
Regarding Nexus... it's not at all like IG2. It's fun, but it's more tactical than strategic. Hard to say, may be what you're looking for.
Thanks guys for the explanations. I think I will give SoaSE a try. I assume I would want to get the "trilogy" package, as that comes with the expansions vs the regular cheaper game?

SoaSE is certainly less micro intensive than SupCom and SC. Don't get me wrong, you will get the best results when you learn it and do it well, but its not as necessary as in those games. Against the CPU I often just let my units fight for themselves and only intervene for important or close battles.
Edit: If you want all the features and/or are interested in most mods or multiplayer, yeah get trinity. You can also get the base game and get the expansions digitally, its usually the same price but sometimes its cheaper if there is a sale. There is also a demo (if a bit out of date by now) if you'd like to see how it performs on your PC first.
Yup; it doesn't have the frantic reflex aspect of a game like Starcraft, but there is a huge emphasis on tactical combat and you can milk a lot of performance out of your fleet through careful positioning and maneuvers.
Trinity is the complete game with all the expansions included. If you want the full game, this is the package to pick up.
The demo is woefully out of date, sadly. The game's performance, stability, and gameplay have improved enormously since release through successive patches.
We should also add, in Sins of a Solar Empire favor, that they're about to release another patch which promises to improve stability and performance on systems which have access to more than 2gigabytes of memory. This is actually pretty great for Sins!
don't worry about the micro in sins. I always played with just the mouse
Ah IG2, what a game. I lost many hours of my early PC-gaming youth to it. Ive never to this day found anything that comes close to it. Shame really the game was a shining example of what was good in 4x RTS.
Sins is a good substitute though and i highly recommend it to you. As a fellow lost IG2 soul
Yup; I'll be closely following the patch's development. For those involved on the multiplayer scene, this patch also promises to clean up some of the more egregious tactics. Presently Advent cannot survive a well-played TEC rush, while nothing holds a candle to Vasari's late game combos (Of course, you won't feel that nearly as much in singleplayer).
Most people seem to think that reflex is the primary determinant of micromanagement skill. It isn't; virtually everyone under 30 with any video-game background has sufficient reflexes to play Starcraft at a respectable level. What holds people back is actually an inability to multi-task effectively and to plan/execute tactics in real-time. Sins, due to its leisurely speed, has effectively no reflex component. However, the multi-tasking, planning, and execution is every bit as important to Sins as it is to any other RTS.
That rings very true to me, although I haven't delved into mp with anyone other than friends. I would say that's yet another point in SOASE's favor as that makes it an extremely tactical game, and isn't that what RTS is supposed to be about?
In other words, OP, yes you should buy it.
