Moving my postings on this game here to keep my thoughts seperate...
So last night I dove into the full game and had a much better run.I went with the fire people and cranked my pretenders fire magic up to 9.Although I forgot to look into the blessings... meant to do that.
I scouted the nearby provinces and once I had a bit of a force built up.. and evocation 3... I headed out to war.I ended up taking over quite a few provinces.. built up my commanders to keep research pumping out.. sent some mages out to look for magical locations.. the same mages were priests as well so I had them build some temples while they were out. My scouts located 2 of the 3 empires I knew were out there...
Then I got tired and didn't pay attention to the preliminary data I had on an independent province. Part of me was just complacent though as my pretender+commander+40 troops were rick-rolling their way across the land with almost no losses. My last battle report told me that I had won.. but that I lost 38 of my 40 troops as well as 2 commanders I watched the replay and saw that a troop of battle elephants had been waiting for me and pretty much steamrolled my troops. My pretender ended up winning the day.. but it was costly.
Now I'm a bit more cautious and will hopefully be able to build back up before anyone notices that I'm a tad weakened....
PM'ed to ya Mauxe
Ok the game has begun. I want to test that I can link to pics on the web so here is my starting location Mauxe:
Super!
I got on and completed my first turn last night.
just curious... so you guys play like a turn a night? Do you have to maintain a connection or just login at X location whenever you want to make your turn or what?
The link I gave on the previous page is for a dedicated server, we log in and give our orders, when all players (in this case Mauxe and myself) have submitted their orders the server processes the turn. When we next log in we download the results of the last turn. So its a turn-based game but not "you go then I go".
We have played I think 6 turns. If you look at them map on my post above Mauxe has his base castle in the patch of forest to the south of me.
At the end of most of my turns I get a nice 10 second pause and then...another turn
I think I tend to take a bit more time as I want to make sure I am not missing more than a newb should...but really you could just take turn after turn after turn through the night as fast as it takes every player to click end turn.
I do that in SP games and start not really caring about my turns, its better to play slower than faster.
I have found that already in SP a bit.. once I start to click too fast I shut it down for the night.
I just meant that in MP you are not limited to a turn a night or anything.. but there is a time limit that everyone does need to take a turn in.
From what I saw in the demo, this reminds me a little for romance of the 3 kingdoms. I loved that game way back on the nes/pc. I think I could get into this... just a matter of when. Glad you found a buddy to learn with tho mauxe. Hope you guys have fun and perhaps I'll catch u on the next game.
You are, of course, quite correct.
For anyone interested I'm doing a basic AAR of the Dom 3 game Mauxe and I are playing here.
Have very much enjoyed our little AI-stomp. I think the game is all but over at the moment and I definitely did not even scratch the surface of the game.
Since we started I have gotten myself involved as a sub for three other games, each in a different phase of evolution.
One is a newb-ish game on turn 36 now. Playing Atlantis in a decent position.
Another is on turn 23 - Ermor. Not so good a spot there. Seems precarious as if the world could collapse in on me at any moment.
In addition I have spent quite a bit of time during my first couple turns learning
It has actually been quite fun and is like a trial by fire. I am surprised by how quickly and easily I have gotten myself sucked into this game. The graphics are certainly nothing great and the whole turn-based-PBEM thing takes me way back to my HOMM2 days... but there is a certain charm to this game.
Oh, almost forgot my third and most recent game. I haven't started it yet but it is on turn ~88 or so and I am hoping to see more serious end-game content.
After these I hope to get in on the next wave of new games starting, including more vs. AI with Michael here.
yeah... the only thing that bother me with my quick run through the demo was maxing out some of the settings and seeing things get a little sluggish. Shouldn't really be possible. That said, I wonder why there isn't alot of modding on this game to buff the visuals etc. Other side note, I also completely get that this game is about game play and not pretty pictures.
I don't think I have my settings maxxed.. I'll have to check.
Watching my little sprite-warriors march/gallop/cast/shoot their way across the battlefield is entrancing though.
I would imagine that it would take a bit to mod the game graphically. Tedious work I'd guess.
Anytime I find myself poring through a manual looking up spell descriptions, paths of magic, items to forge, etc... it's a good thing.
Yeah, the battles really are entertaining enough that you completely stop noticing the bad graphics after a while.
The maps are what you'll notice since you're staring at them 95% of the time, fortunately there's a lot of good ones out there. Sombre's especially.
There's also a few interface mods, pretty sure this was the one I used.
Super, thanks!
I need to dig through the mod folder a bit to see what else is available.
One feature I already wish for is a pop-up info screen for my champions. Instead of right-clicking to get a window screen to come up..a hover would be nice.
One of the people I took over for re-named all of his mages by their magic levels.. 1f2e1s and so on.It helps.
The interface is a major cause of headache in Dom 3
Using the F1 key is helpful.
A little update to my journey:
I have pleasantly found that in between turns the diplomacy between players is an entire game in it's own. Almost like playing out a novel.
The amount of options you have to work with in the game means that you can find yourself with a wide array of material to work with. Very interesting.
Also found it interesting that the developer put out a new patch today.. some 4 years after the game was released the community and the support seems to be going strong. I have also met a group of people who take it upon themselves to get fair and balanced MP games started and moderated.. even if they themselves will not be playing.
Very impressed all around
And yes, I have found the F1 key to be a big help since you mentioned it Michael
Mauxe
Ultimately it's the diplomacy that wins you the game.
Sure, being able to run your nation properly is important, but if you don't make any friends in the game you are screwed. Well most games anyway.
It's also another drain on your time and energy unfortunately. Yes the tedious micro of the mid-late game can make single turns take over an hour just to get your orders in. Then you have the emails/messages/communications which can easily take hours on their own. Play more than one MP game and it just compounds the problem.
Of course it's not really a problem while you enjoy it, but a lot of good people (and players) suffer from the burn out at one point or another. If they could streamline the UI, add better tools to manage the micro, and provide a useful 'in game' communication system it would go a long way to lessening this burn out.
It would also make AI stomps more appealing.
Mauxe and Michael, I'm Thanatus on the Dom forums, so I look forward into newb stomping some AI ass with you guys.
I took a look at your mods and quickly worked out who you were
Because you joined up I had to scrap my first map for a bigger one
I don't have lawns to mow after work tonight so I'll get the map set up and sent to NT Jedi who will add some fun to it. How good of a player do you rate yourself Xia?
I've only played SP, and I would give myself a 5/10. I play the crap out of these strategy games, but I've never actually been any good at them. But I do know the game, I just...don't really know any good strategies or anything.
Neifel with a 9E 4N (or a tad more on nature if you can swing it) and what else do you really need to do to stomp AI????
Granted, all you learn is how to build SCs, but hey, that's nominally a late game strat for just about anyone depending on their research goal.
But really, stomping AIs is not that much fun, more fun to just go after each other, you learn a lot more that way too, and the games don't go on forever.
