I just red this post wich is locked out for replys. https://forums.elementalgame.com/347311
This is fucking BULLSHIT . fuck this country and there wack ass laws and regulations. i said this countrys goin to shit 10yrs ago, then we got bush for president then we got osama for president, now there sending people to jail for making a website. whats fuckin next, i say we support them some how by doing mass priated material handouts and every retail software store with free pb logos on each case,
i understand support smaller companys but cold day in hell im giving EA another penny of my money for the crap they push out wiht there 6month pc game deadlines.
I guess I will learn about copy write law then. Changes every day so why bother until I need to. The meter was a pic off the net of a meter but I changed the text and added the animated meter so is it mine now or do I owe money to the family of the caveman that invented the colour green and red as well? I think it's ok because I erased the do not copy section lol.
Just learning Gifs and animated brushes for games, made my avatar blink last night as well.
Then, in that case, Batman will probably steal it. Great job on the meter.
I've never said anything about needing money to have morals. It's interesting that you make things up. Then again, you seem unable to formulate an argument without trying to shove large groups of individuals into narrowly construed categories designed only to stoke your ego.
It was spahgettimon that said that he buys items when he has money, when he didn't he pirated.
Nice job trying to formulate an argument when you can't read.
Your word use clearly indicates a plurality, but thank you for demonstrating, again, you don't know a thing about the golden rule you play lip service to.
And again, the golden rule does NOT state that you must be a pushover for societies assholes. I would give the same lack of respect for any other criminal.
If someone was to bully my friends I would not give them any respect. I would probably kick their ass.
Keep going on about the golden rule, but again people who have no concept of morality will not abide by any rules. People who steal do not abide by any rules,
If I stole from someone I would expect that people would stand for themselves. I would expect that people wouldn't be pushovers.
So I am doing what I believe. I believe in morality and personal responsibility. I believe in kindness, recpect, but I also believe in defending yourself against people who have no boundaries. So I would honestly drop the 'golden rule hypocrisy' if I was you.
I find it funny that one, who would claim a belief in kindness and respect, would so completely miss the ultimate point of the golden rule, being forgiveness, charity, and a general good will towards one's fellow man. While the golden rule does not state that one should be a pushover, it does have seem to have a problem with your second part about lack of respect. In general, I do not get into moral debates with people who are so strongly committed to such a destructive moral code, but I think in trying to bring the conversation back from mindless name calling, I will take a few moments to correct some of the flaws in your moral argument. If someone broke into your home and put your family at risk, this person has crossed a very real boundary and you have every right to protect your family. This is not a morality issue, but one of the simple nature of life. If you are not willing to defend your life or the lives of those you love, then you are deserving of the things that happen to you. If someone is bullying your friends, standing up for them is also not a moral issues, as again you are simply protecting the safety and happiness of those you care about. Yet, this brings us to a fundamental principle about Morality. If you have to create a hypothetical situation to define goodness or badness, you have shown nothing. Any maxim ( ie rule/law/Moral code ) can not rely upon a hypothetical situation to define its inherent goodness or badness, since this situation is one of a near infinite amount of possible situations, which can show the maxim in any number of different moral lights. Using the right hypothetical situation, one can claim murder, rape, theft, or even genocide to be good in one form or another. If something is to be considered good it must always be good, no matter what. Now, that said, You toss around a lot of words like Morality and personal responsibility, while also knocking people with 'no boundaries'. I hate to break it to you, but the limitless and unbounded nature of humanity is what makes us so amazing. It is that nature that even allows you to consider your own responsibilities and moralities. When looking at the history of the World, it is not the boundless that start wars, invade countries, commit mass genocide, or steal the livelihood of third world children. It is those who would have you believe that you are not boundless and must align yourself with a particular and limited paradigm of thought. To bring this all back to the original topic of conversation, I shall end by asking as two simple questions. First, How you feel if someone came up to you and started calling you names, like criminal? And Secondly, if internet pirates are such amazingly bad criminals destroying the livelihoods of hardworking people, how come the media industry is one of the wealthiest and most powerful groups on the planet?
From Batman's post above:
Well, there you have it. The boy admits he's just trolling.
Wow! This is the most insane perversion of the golden rule I have ever heard. Let me take a moment to spell it out for those who may not completely see how amazingly insane this is. Firstly, downloading copyrighted materials does not make one "a crook". So to say that you would treat someone who you do not actually know is a crook in this way means you must treat everyone you even remotely believe to be a criminal as a criminal. Secondly, the golden rule does not say "Do unto others as you would expect to be done to you in some particular situation". If you were a criminal and had control of what was done to you, you would have mercy and compassion. This is the entire point of the golden rule, mercy and compassion. And thirdly, the golden you does not say "If you kind of believe a person to be of substandard moral character, treat them as poorly as possible because they obviously don't have the same kind of moral character as you". That said, how can someone talk about other's as being criminals while taking on the mantle of vigilante ( btw vigilantism is a crime)?

Oh no worries, I think most people know that this self proclaimed genius is severely lacking in another type of intelligence, probably more the one.
This guy's funny and thanks for getting me in this discussion, I just found out I am allowed to share my music in canada as long as not for profit.

Both interesting talks, thanks.
OMG, I thought this was about sid meier's pirate game... ouch, did i make a wrong turn!
Fun game. I keep hoping for a 2nd one that isn't just a remake but a sequel with more... stuff.
I think Pirate Bay should be shut down. If not for the mega $ corporations then for the little people that lose out where they shouldn't.
I remember watching a talk show here in Aus called Insight where they had a local band trying to make a living from their music in the audience with people who were their fans but didn't actually buy their cd, preferring to get it from pbay. What can you say when the creator of something you respect is looking you in the eye and saying "geez, I'm trying to make a living here".
It is also true that we have a modern culture that is nurtured by corporations to create a materialistic desire in the population, if that population goes out and pirates cds of their magazine cover heroes than maybe thats just part of the cost of advertising.
I know that pbay (well, illegal torrents and the like, I'm sure there are SOME torrents that are legal) should not be happening, but reality is they do and they are popular, so the industry and governments have to find some way to allow the economy to continue within the realms of human behavior.
I wouldn't call it a remake, more a graphics upgrade. I thought it was a console game adapted to computer, the mechanics of it are that retro. Cheats galore and an incredibly clumsy interface, the game seemed like something out of the early 90's, except for the graphics, which are well done. But I cant see what about that game justified it's $20 or more price tag, it's piracy golldangit . There is so much wrong with this game, it is un-effing-believable. I bought it off a sale at Impulse for $2.50, that which is about what it is worth. Civ4 was bad enough, but this? 2K/Firaxis or whoever makes the decisions at that place are little better than junk bond salesmen.
I liked it.
Play a concert and I will buy a ticket.
I think the main problem with all that 'we have to stop the piracy' lies in a big bad missunderstanding.
just because i pirated a given game or music, that really doesnot mean i would have bought it in the first place
so in this logical sense, i never stole something, since the company didnot lost anything.
but, sometimes, a company i would have never paid a single cent because i just wouldnot know them, earns me as a loyal costumer
Example:
iam a big fan of 4X game. now before i buy something i wanna know if i will actualy like it.
so i pirated Sword of the Stars - Complete edition 3 months ago, and guess what, that game is so awesome that i bought it on impulse for a fair price.
I did pirate sins of a solar empire, space empires V, imperium galactica, and many others, but guess what, i never play them cous they are just not my cup of tea.
so imo piracy helps more than it hurts.
edit for typos
p.s. I am so glad i did pirate CIV V aswell because, guess what, i played it 2 times, and will not be tempted to do so again in a very long time,
i did however buy Elemental on the day it was released, and u guys know that it wasnot worth 50 bucks back than, and i was very disapointed, but still, i dont regret it because Stardock is putting in so much effort. the same cannot be said about 2k and Civ V, so i didnot steal anything, iam just not their costumer, cous their produckt SUX !
Thats great if 100% of the time you do buy those game which you otherwise would have purchased. If you use pbay as a means of getting "demos" and you are honest all well and good. Most games already have a demo version but if your honest it doesn't really matter for you.
Personally I think you would fall into the minority. Also being able to psychically predict that in an alternate reality without demos or pbay you would not have purchased said game that you don't purchase in this reality is an amazing skill. I know I sometimes get caught up in advertising and end up buying a game of lesser quality, but thats advertising, thats why companies pay money to people who know how you and I as gamers think.
You may think thats a rant against advertising compelling me to purchase games of dubious quality, its not and if you do think this read the paragraph again. Welcome to the game of life.
Most pirates aren't going to run out and fork out 60 dollars on a game because after pirating a game because it's good. I know some people say they do that, and some probably actually do, but I suspect most don't. You do have a point about this weird idea that a pirated copy equals a lost sale. It doesn't, and that's already been proven. There are, of course, perfectly legal torrents too. STO released it's beta client via torrent and it was hours faster than using their download service. I don't think the punishment dealing with copyright infringement fits the crime at the moment, not in comparison to other crimes that involve taking what doesn't belong to you. It's also like swatting at flies. I mean sure you can get a few but as soon as you get a few, more just seem to appear. The industries plan isn't working, except those in charge of fighting the good fight refuse to change course. I guess getting a pat on the back and forking out a lot of money for DRM schemes that don't work, is just better than finding a solution right? It's probably more fun to run around blaming pirates for everything too. Dear lord what would happen if a game failed and the industry couldn't blame pirates... heads would explode I am sure.
I think much of, if not most, pirating is due to high costs. Most pirates appear to be teenagers and college aged and most them probably don't have much money to buy the stuff they want. So they pirate. Since every time a "pirating" site gets shut down, it, or a replacement for it, just opens up somewhere else, pirating is always available. recently I bought 2 games off Impulse sales. The first one, Civ3 Complete I was looking for because my Conquests disk was too scratched to use (and stupidly, I never made a back-up of it). I found Complete for about $9 off Amazon (boxed) and $5 off Impulse. I decided on Impulse because I'd been meaning to give a download service a try and for $5, if it wasn't what I wanted, no big deal. The other game was Pirates, and I bought that only because it was on sale for $2.50. I would have not bought the game at regular price and if it had not been on sale, it probably wouldn't have occurred to me to even look for a copy of that game. I think that if downloading legal games and stuff were cheap like this, a lot more people would buy them instead of pirate them. Especially younger people who cant afford full prices. Buying those games legally was certainly a lot easier than trying to pirate them. I just plugged some info onto a form and started downloading. It was also safer, since I didn't have to worry about getting a virus.
One other thing, many teenagers don't yet have credit cards or bank accounts where they can buy stuff over the web. They either have to ask someone to buy it for them, or pirate it. How to resolve that is another matter, since giving 14 year old a credit card may not be such a good idea in a lot of cases.
I also think that companies know that reducing their prices would probably reduce piracy of their products much better than all their DRM schemes are. I think they don't follow that route because their marketing people are convinced they can make more money off less customers buying at high prices, than they can with more customers buying at low prices. The DRM is there to discourage customers sharing the products with friends, not to stop pirating on the web. They use the excuse of pirating for all their various customer rip-off schemes, but I don't think they figure pirating into the economics of these products when they figure their cost vs profit analysis.
I agree with the comments about the level of punishment, hearing that somebody has downloaded a few songs and is now being threatened with fines in the order of thousands, tens of thousands, its just ridiculous. If I stole 3 of the same cd from a store, kept one copy and gave the other two to friends I'd at most be at risk of a $1000 fine for first offense. Ridiculous.
As far as high costs of games go, its up to the government, courts and companies to come up with a way thats best for everyone. The governments and courts make rules and impose fines that are realistic and workable to discourage piracy and the games companies to have a pricing system that results in a profitable business. It may be that lowering the cost doesn't result in more profit, it may result in less if sales don't increase to cover the price drop.
Its probably unrealistic to believe that internet piracy will disappear in the coming few years so games companies just have to rely on the honest people and the pirates will be a group that benefits without contribution. If the average games company or movie company survive then thats good for them and the pirates just get something for free. Unless some new way of enforcement or stopping illegal torrents occurs then what I have written is the unemotional reality and ranting and raving won't change it.
Personally I think it would be best if piracy didn't occur, but it does.
