Yeah, yeah, this is a Stardock forum and we all hate Steam, blah blah...
Anyway, lots of specials like last year for those who have been on the fence about various titles. Most titles on the site are 10-90% off.
Some notable stuff today:
Super Meat Boy $3.75 (why isn't this game on Impulse at all?!)
Various Indie Game packs for $5 each (5 games per pack)
CivIV Complete $6.25(!)
Evil Genius $1.50
Serious Sam HD 1&2 $7.50
Valve Complete Pack $25
And this is day 1. I'd love to support Impulse here, but the total Christmas sale they've had this month so far has sucked compared to one day of Steam offers.
Your welcome .
Back to the topic :
Overlord games - 75 percent off all games in the series. Borderlands - 50 percent off game and all DLC releases Torchlight - $4.99 Battlefield 2 Complete Collection - $5 King Arthur Complete Pack - $5.39 Devil May Cry 4 - $4.99 ArmA II - $9.99 Counter-Strike Source - $4.99 Saints Row 2 - $7.50 Fallout New Vegas - $29.99 or $24.99 if you own Fallout 3 Ghost Recon - 75 percent off all games in series Sam and Max The Devil's Playhouse - $9.99
edit:
And i still not bought anything for myself .
Ah, ok. I dont know much of the Civ games, but it seems that IV had more expansions and content than III. Which one would be more new to the games friendly?
Finally broke down and got RUSE. Gonna be shweeeeet.
Trust me, get Civ4 complete edition. I found Civ3 really lackluster compared to Civ2 even, and Civ 2 was really old school. Most of the mods for C3 have new and improved C4 versions too. Civ3's highlight was that it was the first that used multiplayer I think, but don't quote me on that.
Civ 4 also has an options menu to die for if you are a big PC gamer. I was outright shocked how how backwards Civ 5 was in comparison.
I just searched Impulse for RUSE but all I get is the "e" guide.
That looks like a good game; also might consider getting it.
But..
Is the search function at Impulse twitchin with a bug?
The eguide for this game shows up but not the game. An Ubisoft title too... Why sell the e-guide but not the game?
I really want to give Stardock my business this mithrasmas season. I hope they help me.
-.-
Ah, interesting info, ty ! I'll get Civ IV complete then. $3 for Civ III complete looks good, if only for the sale. Civ 2, ah, didnt get to try that one. Anyone know where would someone find it?
hmm... looks like you can buy it for 69 dollars here or trade it in for 2. Also only works for playstation, isn't that nice.
http://www.amazon.com/Civilization-2-Playstation/dp/B00000I1BP
or you can get it for about 3.74 on amazon here for PC.

Awesome game but probably showing its age by now
I highly recommend Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri if you like this genre a lot. It is like a sci-fi version of Civ on an alien planet. It has an expansion too. For some reason never any sequels though
I've got SMAC all boxed up and never played. Not sure if it'll even run on Vista.
It runs. You'll need a patch for vista/7 systems which a little bit of searching should find.
R.U.S.E. is also Steamworks game - so you wont see it on Impulse anytime soon.
I think 5$ or BF2 on Steam is better than the 15 here. It's understandable, however, because to my knowledge Impulse is barely past infancy, right? They probably can't afford to give discounts like the omnipotent Steam. Just my two cents.
What I don't understand is that the sales on Steam are often reflected on other digital stores even all purpose ones like Amazon and those less focused on actual games like Newegg. Steam has very clever marketing to bind it all together yet other places are still selling it at higher prices even though online stores like the examples I mentioned earlier are still selling them at sale price.
Is this just because all the above can afford to sell less and match each other's prices, making up the money in sale volume, or are the other online stores simply slow in adapting or not allowed to sell less because its not allowed in whatever contract they signed with a publisher?
To my knowledge the idea is either to sell more units to compensate for the reduced cost, or an overstock. Either way, Steam is more known about, I daresay, so perhaps publishers give them more leeway than in their eyes ultimately inferior electronic resources like Impulse.
My speculation.
Well... a few things to consider with digital distribution. It is obviously cheaper for a company to sell digitally than through a store. No retail packaging, no shelf space, no media to create, etc. Additionally, unless its the companies digital distribution platform, there is no cost to them outside of what they pay the digital distributer. For instance, if bf2 retails for $40, the question becomes what does ea charge stardock per copy of bf2. if the cost is low, like $10 per unit, then they would have the option to sell at any price above that and make a profit (well, you have to factor in the cost of always having the game available for download (bandwidth), the time required to host patches through the distributor, and so on). Its really a question of the contracts involved. If what I've described is accurate, then the distributor has alot of freedom in how they can rule sales, etc. They could have a lower price on this and that to drive the attach rate of their platform. Or it could be that every time a sale occurs, the distributor has to get a buy in from whoever is publishing the game. And it could be that steam is much more aggressive at pursuing these deals than stardock, etc. At any rate, it seems like there must be a limitation in place that restricts distributors from dropping the price of a newly launched game immediately. Obviously, if a game was just released and I know I can get it for $60 now on one site and $30 on another, of course I'll buy it on the other site.
Anyway, this is all good for the consumer in my mind, as I know if I'm patient, one of these sites will have a sale and I'll get a great deal. But generally speaking, steam ends up with sales on games I want a bit earlier than sd. I'd prefer to support SD (eg if they have a better deal or the same deal, I will always buy from them), but my business goes to whoever offers me the most savings. I've been able to predict the sales patterns to some degree on steam, but I haven't quite figured out when SD will offer a sale on this or that yet. I'm really happy to see that SD is offering sales promotions throughout the holiday season and I'm sure they will keep building on this.
edit - one other observation: I find that I keep steam installed AND check it a few times a week for deals. Always on Wed and the weekend. That's when they typically have sales. I don't check impulse like that. I have that impulse now enabled and they give me a popup each day, so I never really bother to browse their site UNLESS i see something in a popup. That's good and bad. Good that I see their sale items at a glance daily, but bad that I don't even bother to check out their site unless i see a pop up that interests me. If they wanted to get my attention through marketing, a one day code that offered 20% the catalog or even a particular company's games would get me looking at what they have to offer. That way, you'd have more people feeling like they only have a day to make a purchase at a discount AND they'd force the user to examine the catalog, perhaps finding other things they want.
You hear a lot of things on the internet and it's hard to know for sure what is accurate for some issues. But my understanding is that when a game first comes out there tends to be a minimum price. I've heard that this price is primarily influenced by the retail stores, they have the most expenses and they can threaten not to sell a game if they are being undercut by online prices.
These are new times. If you've got a good game, pay the game sites to advertise it and tell the retail outlets to kiss your behind.

I got the Dragon Age for 50% off. So far made it through the opening scenes. Just not getting into it quite yet.
Dragon Age is good. Seemed hard at first but its good.
We aren't quite at the point where that's an option for any major title yet but hopefully it's not too far off.
Tropico 3 is a pretty fun city-builder type game too, well worth 6 dollars.
There's a certain dragon that doesn't agree with you
I bought Torchlight for 3 euro yesterday.
Well no actually. The discussion I was replying to is about why things can't be sold digitally for less then retail store price when a game first comes out. And cataclysm costs the same online as in the retail store.
