I wanted to voice my opinion on the current state of the civilizations that we compete against in elemental.
For me the factions just lack any sort of flavour. At all.
I know absolutely nothing about the internal politics of either major faction or the backgrounds of the peoples the create them and their relationships.
Compare that to the level of background info available in galciv. There's so much of it that it largely defines the atmosphere of your entire game based on what races you end up playing against.
You KNOW the Drengin will go to war with whoever they please. you KNOW the Drath will try to create conflict and profit from the sidelines. you KNOW that annoying spy on your planet was sent by the Krynn.
You know the Iconians created the Yor and that the Drengin enslaved the Torians and all the other good stuff that adds background information on why exactly you should care who the other civilizations are.
In elemental it's just a generic opponent, they all feel exactly the same.
I've never once had any reaction to who my closest opponent is and I hate that there's just no atmosphere generated, it's almost as if that faction is just a faceless wall that's stopping me claiming resources.
Going back to galciv again, if you started next to the Drengin you knew you'd best invest in bigger guns as soon as you could (same with monty in Civ IV). If you started near the Korx you knew you could look forward to some decent trade income and quite likely a knife in the back when you weren't looking and it's just things like that which make me keep playing galciv, it gives the game a personality.
Please, please bring this to elemental when the mechanics are working properly.
I agree with this completely.
Also individual faction specific armore and weapons (types and graphics), please! Like the Kraxis should have 'fallen paladin' type gear, and the Urxen should have spikes and wickedly serrated weapons...
What he said!
Have yall tried HeavenFall's Expanded Factions mod? If you want to see what is currently possible with various factions, check that mod out.
I also agree, they are 10 flavors of vanilla.
*Agrees with everything posted above*
You really should try Heavenfalls mod.
It would be nice if the equipment looked different. Because of the unit design I don't care if they actually play differently.
The Civ4 FFH2 mod's team (including Derek) had distinct factions, so I'm hoping Derek will apply that old black magic he did so well to Elemental, as time permits.
x2
I have seen it and I've got to say that it's an excellent mod.
But as I've said before an excellent game should not require modding to be excellent.
I'm acutely aware that stardock could, if they decided to throw away their entire ethos and company policy suddenly, leave the game as it currently is with no further changes as many developers have done in the past. But it would be a shame for a game with this much potential to never become anything more.
Hence why I keep posting critiques and suggestions.
I think that the game could feel a bit more "individualized" with opponents if each AI had more different preferences about what to research in the arcane trees. That is, maybe one AI civ will prefer to research the experience upgrade branch of the Kingdom warfare branch over other warfare branches, whereas another AI civ may prefer equipment upgrades. AIs would then generally not deviate from trying to max out branches before starting others except for strategic decisions like needing to generate a particular resource in the Adventure tech after not finding any through expansion.
Me too. This has been one of the biggest issue with Elemental from day one.
I agree, but don't get ahead of yourselves. The AI has to be good before it can start being distinct.
Right now if they all tried to act differently, well, it would just be 10 different flavors of terrible.
I believe that StarDock is going to give the fractions personality in future patches and expansions. This patch (V1.1) was largely focused on rebalancing and redoing the existing mechanics to form a stable platform for the future.
I agree also, but I don't know how to solve the problem.
This probably should be the focus of the first expansion.
Agreed.
We all agree on this.
