If someone comes up with a really great mechanism that only works if the player builds a whole lot of the exact same thing, slap them. Not hard, that would be rude. But enough to let them know that this is a bad bad thing and they just made a mess. Maybe rub their nose in it? I dunno, I see people do that with dogs and it's just so degrading. You know, to the owner. Anyway, I didn't make the effort of loading up Elemental to play SimStudy:War of Studies. Please don't make me play SimStudy. Really, I'm asking you nicely here. Do it again and you'll get the whip(ped cream). What will we do with all those squares that won't be filled with hundreds of exactly the same thing? Well I suppose we could not have them! And perhaps have our buildings require a few more workers! It'll be ok, really.
Oh, and the next time someone decides to write quests that mock how frequently they're repeated, slap them too (carefully!). Instead of spamming about eleventeen billion huts all over the map, each of which has one of exactly four quests, just make four huts. With just those four quests. Maybe six, if you're feeling outre. The rest of them can just not exist! And maybe make those four quests, since there are only the four, a little more exciting, a little more involved, and a little more rewarding. Don't go all out -- after all, these quests are gonna get really dull on round nine thousand and one -- but add a little spice. Something more exciting than some old lady in a hut. If I wanted to bother an old lady in a hut, I could go down to Central Park and poke one. And perhaps a reward that is a little more useful than a rock. I know, you can turn in several rocks for a sword but, really, I'd rather not walk around with a rock. It makes me feel like my character also belongs in a hut in Central Park.
Basically, doing exactly the same thing over and over is only fun if you're brain damaged. Please stop building mechanisms that require it. Unless, of course, the name Elemental is supposed to mean, you know, trivially easy or something. I suppose that would make sense if it were a game for the brain damaged. Have I been utterly duped?!
Tactical battles, even though they've got more cheese than the average Texan, are enjoyable. I love the Dominate ability I found on this one lady wandering through the wilderness, and am using it quite regularly. I especially enjoyed finding it on some sullen tart wandering the wilderness! And my sovereign handing her a bag of money and then, five minutes later, marrying her was delightfully un-PC. Based on the speed with which the two of them are popping out children, I have a feeling that dominate must be especially effective in bed. On the other hand, since it's designed to prevent counter attacks, I suppose it isn't working there after all. But on the field? She's spearing people -- well, ok, spiders mostly -- down like a madwoman. In any event, it'd be nice if the sovereign's significant other could in fact have even the slightest bit of personality.
I mean it just seems somewhat odd that everyone is so focused on the heirs and not so interested in their, you know, partner. Perhaps some slightly less antediluvian relationships could be employed?
I like this much.
Like defeating armies and conquering cities repeadtly until you win by Conquest?
And then starting a new game to do the same?
You have a point in some parts though.
Conquest is only repetitive at a high level. Once you screw down to the micro level, each situation is sufficiently different to make it interesting. It certainly isn't building exactly the same building dozens of times.
That said, conquest can become extremely repetitive when the amount of thought required is minimal. Example: if I generate dudes with slightly higher armor than the enemy can beat with their weapons, I win. Every time. Period. This is not fun. It's also a major flaw of the whole tactical battle format and the combat system in particular.
Magic is a pretty good counter in the early game but once unit groups become common and HP inflation gets out of hand, combat is entirely a function of who can bring the dude with more armor and just enough attack.
So, to answer your question, yes. Bloodless conquest of faceless enemy empire after faceless enemy empire is not fun.
I'd suggest a few changes to the group system, chiefly that only HP is additive, while armor and attack are not. Furthermore, I'd zero the dodge stat for all groups -- an entire group of guys can't just wiggle away from a stab, it's ridiculous! I'd then focus the spear, hammer and axe classes around group combat (better accuracy for spears, better combat speed for axes, better damage for hammers). Finally, I'd add a medium and light armor class that improve the dodge stat, and focus the entire sword class around them -- bonus to dodge, lesser bonuses to accuracy and combat speed.
You'd then have the option of either an army of heavy dudes in groups who can soak up a ton of damage, or a smaller one of dodge focused characters who attempt to avoid damage entirely.
No, conquest is pretty repetative. Build masses of guys with boar spear and full leather armor. March to hostile city. Hit auto-resolve. March to next city. Repeat until world is conquered. This is how all my games have been going. Honestly, i feel like there are only 3 kinds of units in the game. Troops, made by a nation, with more or less armor and weapons, but all basically the same. Champs, just like troops except they are also shiny and have a +1 to something. And random mobs, that are out to kill pioneers and caravans. Honestly, the random bandits feel like they have the most character of the 3 options.
No offense to Brad but...I agree completely.
They really need to hire a full-time writer to actually make quests and goodie huts and that sort of things. One of the main problems with this game is that it's so unimaginative. The storyline is bland, the flavor text in generic, the quests and monsters are boring.
I don't know what they're doing, but they really just need to hire a guy to make 'fun stuff' like quests and the like. The mod tools are all there, it's just the fact that no one is making anything, or has made anything. If they just had a guy putting together quests and making new monsters, that would be awesome.
Stop crying and escort my son home. Also i want some midnight stones. I use them to decorate my garden so i may have to send you for a lot of them.
I hope future add us ~20-30 quests each level and they are more different. With that i feel quests are will be really good.
