My friend and i are looking for a new game to play, we both love strat games, fps, rpgs, whatever. We recently burned through starcraft2, borderlands and are now sort of playing mount and blade: warband in tandem. We would love to find something similar in vein to Borderlands, but really anything similar to those games would be awesome. Thanks!
Well the obvious one is Fallout 3 and New Vegas. They are basically the same as Borderlands. They do some things better, and some things worse. I think Oblivion is an obvious suggestion too as it's the same too, but fantasy rather than shooting. As for RPG's there was that just came out called Two Worlds 2 which is getting great reviews. I plan on buying it tomorrow. There is also another one that is a team based RPG called Drakensang: The River of Time. I plan on getting that after I have played Two Worlds 2.
I'm not sure if any of these games will let you play co-op with your friend though, but they are still great games.
As for games similar to Elemental, I highly recommend Age of Wonders, Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic, and Heroes of Might & Magic 5.
Just get the whole trilogy, which is availible as a bundle on Impulse. Then get maps from Age of Wonders & Age of Wonders 2 Heaven and have enough stuff to stay busy for the next year or so (as a minimum, if you stick to only the very best maps and play really fast).
I just looked up two worlds 2, and it doesn't come out till next year
WarHammer Online requires teamwork.
two worlds 2 is already out on sites like gamersgate. not sure about impulse.
I think you could have a blast with Demigod. I believe the retail price is $20, but it does go on sale from time to time. Easily the game I love the most.
If you are looking for multiplayer co-op games, I can heartily recommend Left 4 Dead and Dawn of War II, despite the fact that they are Steam exclusives. There are alot of haters out there, but I think Supreme Commander 2 is pretty fun as long as you are ok with the fact that it plays nothing like its predecessor. Demigod and Sins of a Solar Empire are also fantastic and are worth every penny no matter the price.
Good Luck!
Make that left 4 dead 2, it is a significant face lift compared to n1. One of my favourite games of the last year, great for coop with friends.
Two Worlds Two is pretty awesome actually and it even has multiplayer. My uncle let me borrow his laptop since I'm stuck in bed 24/7 now so I can play some games from in bed when I feel up to it so I've been playing it a little when I can. The spell system in TwT is amazing. It lets you mix your own spells and literally make your own spells. This was a similar system to a suggestion I made for Elemental a couple years ago. Too bad something like that couldn't have been used in Elemental so we could make our own spells. The physics system comes into play with a lot of spells as well. For instance one spell I use summons a ton of boulders which hurt my enemies and can be used to block enemies from getting to you. Another spell I use summons a tornado. When I use the summon rocks spell and then use the tornado my character is surrounded with a spinning rock wall of death and anything that comes in contact with it is bludgeoned to death and then the body of the dead enemy also gets sucked into the tornado and the spinning body can hit and damage other enemies. It's pretty damn cool .

It's good stuff. If you liked Oblivion you'll like Two Tworlds Two. It's MUCH better than the first Two Worlds.
Link? Gamer's gate appears to have two worlds the original one... same on steam. I don't see anywhere that you can actually get two worlds 2.
Two worlds 2 looks interesting. I thought it was only out in Europe. How did you get it?
Gamersgate says "Not available in North America and UK. Release dates for those territories are to be decided."
Check this out. http://gamingreloaded.blogspot.com/2010/11/you-can-buy-and-play-english-two-worlds.html
That article let me know where to order it. You can buy the International Version (as well as the German and Spanish versions) from this retailer right here:
http://www.german-proxy.de/proxy.php/Oi8vd3d3/LmdhbWVy/c2dhdGUu/Y29tL0RE/LVRXMi90/d28td29y/bGRzLTI_/3D/b1/fnorefer
That's the German Proxy version of Gamersgate where you can order the International version from Germany. You can't buy the "American Version" from the American site version of Gamersgate but from the German site you Can order the English version and have it mailed to the US (gotta love loop holes). Just make an account and you can order it by mail and even get it express mail. I got lucky and my mother-in-law felt like buying me a present . I didn't know it wasn't out here in North America yet. Just make sure it either isn't region specific or have a DvD/CD drive where the region setting isn't locked.
Great thanks. I'll be looking into that later this week.
I know Europeans have to deal with it all the time but was the publisher thinking releasing the game so much later in the US. That can't be good for business!
Np, you can also get the English Demo here from Gamershell.com:

The size is reasonable too at only 865.76MB
If Demigod, why not League of Legends? It's more polished and receives weekly patches and content updates, has a much greater level of variety, a more strategic meta-game, etc etc etc. It's also free.
I preordered Demigod, played it for a few weeks, and shelved it. It, for me, was just another game in a long line of games where the hype fell far short of the end result. Those trailers were fantastic, but I found the actual game to be clunky, shallow, and built to a much smaller scale then I had imagined. Worst of all, I started finding the game repetitive.
On the other hand, I've found LOL to be a much deeper and more dynamic game. It's hard to explain, exactly, but I also find it.. sleeker? cleaner? more graceful?
Hm.... perhaps "sexy," in the way a car or a piece of piece of technology can be called "sexy" is most apt.
I do not know about Two Worlds 2, but in some cases they need a separate publisher for the US release. And some games have trouble getting a publisher in the US to be interested.
You probably want to play coop or sit at the same computer and sort of cooperate playing, I take it. The list of games where you can actually cooperate in a campaign is limited. Let's see.. the simple option is RTS and FPS games where you can play 'team deathmatch' or similar; there is coop, but only in random, storyless skirmishes. Most games fall into this category, but not all.
StrategyEmpire: Total War (Online coop only). I recommend Empire because of its variety in factions - while Napoleon Total War is more polished, its faction variety is much less.Civilization IV (Or V, but IV has far more features counting expansions.). Playing as team there works rather well.Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War II. Very good coop campaign (online), with (diablo style) RPG elements.Company of Heroes: Probably the best RTS game out there, playing team skirmish vs. AI or others is a blast.FPSFPS: Resident Evil 5 (Online coop only). One of the better coop story games out there, even if it's clunky as heck.Battlefield series, any. (Skirmish team battles).
RPG/Whatever:Trine and Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light are both similar: You can play them 'couch co-op' (Helps to have an xbox PC controller though), and they are very fun while doing it.
I hope you find something that strikes your fancy!
Well, you should keep in mind you are talking to one of the biggest demigod fan boys - figured I'd preface my comments with that. But, odds are its going to come down to "I like this game for X reason and you don't like this game for X reason."
I've never been a fan of league of legends, though I've got to say I'm jealous of the model they have in place for patching. I'd imagine that game will receive support for quite some time. But that said, one of the biggest drawbacks of LoL are the graphics. Its just not a very pretty game. Not compared to demigod - the maps and character models are gorgeous.
Another thing - the limited zoom of LoL. In Demigod you can pull all the way back on a map and view everything or zoom in to get as close to a battle as you want. I'm also more partial to the game play in Demigod than LoL, but that's more of a "to each his own" sort of thing. I don't know for sure, but I don't believe LoL has any modding support, while Demigod does (granted its limited, but the community has been able to come up with AI mods, UI mods, fun new game modes, etc).
There are more than 1 or 2 maps in Demigod. Last I checked, didn't LoL only have 1 or 2? Demigod has 8. In Demigod you also upgrade things like your gold income, your troops, your defense, your xp rate, etc, so there is a deeper meta game there. In addition, there is the capture the flag mechanic in Demigod that grants the team additional bonuses (extra hp/mana/gold/dmg etc).
I think the only thing LoL has that demigod does not is hiding and then popping up. I'm not really sure why you'd think the meta game in LoL is much deeper, tbh, though. A given games strategy in Demigod comes down to the characters that were selected, the abilities of those characters and how complimentary they are to the group, the build a player has chosen to use with that demigod, the level of teamwork, the bonus given by the capture the flag style bonuses (extra hp for the team/extra gold for the team/extra damage for the team), controlling and locking key flags, etc. Anyway, it seems a lot deeper to me than LoL.
AI War has a fun multiplayer co-op mode, and is a pretty awesome game to boot
I'm really considering picking this one up as well. Didn't know it had co-op. Good stuff!
Keep in mind the vid is from 2009 and since then the game has received a substantial graphics update (particle effects, some texture work, better UI), but the stuff he talks about is still there
Prepare for ramble:
I will agree to disagree, especially in the graphical department. Now, I can understand us having different aesthetic values, but I should still say that I really prefer the cell-shaded art style of LOL, even if it borrows Warcraft 3's colour pallet. While Demigod is more traditionally 3D, it has some pitfalls in my eyes. First, it suffers from a now very common ailment: Brown. Most of the maps, and characters, "feature" the color brown rather heavily. On top of that, aside from the demigods, minions, and tower/shops, the map is essentially a flat, featureless texture. Together, these have always made the maps seem rather bland to me.
Demigod does allow a greater zoom. I'll give you that.
It's true, LOL has only two(4 if you count different "themes") maps, with a third on the way, but you can't deny they are more vibrant, featured, and detailed than those in Demigod. the greater level of detail also serves gameplay purposes. The tree-lines and cliffs break up line of sight and offer an escape option for characters with abilities like jump or blink. The neutral creatures allows for more varied strategies. There are character builds that revolve completely around staying off the main paths and focusing on the "jungle creeps."
The brush, which allows you to hide, is a huge difference. This falls into the question of maps as well, but I think it's too big a point to tack on. It's a game-changer. The brush plays a big role in facilitating LOL's ambushes and amazing escapes. Successful teams use it to their advantage, and keep a special eye on it when they aren't using it.
Demigod does have some meta-gaming, but I was referring more to the customization you can do outside of the matches. The WoW-like talent tree, the "summoner spells" you can add to any character, the runes which you apply to boost things like hp, attack speed, magic penetration, cool-down reduction, etc. The way you set up your characters before matches have huge impacts on the way they play, and thus on team dynamics. And then you have some characters with inherent support skills that do things like the flags do, such as give the entire team more gold, or faster experience growth...
The flags are actually one of the things I ended up disliking the most. I found most games ended up one of two ways: One team steamrolled the other, or we spent far too long capturing and recapturing flags. Very rarely, it felt, did I play a game that was neither a stalemate nor one-sided.
But... yeah. I won't say you're wrong to like Demigod more, but I certainly value things differently than you do.
