Stardock and Ironclad have been looking at what's next for Sins of a Solar Empire. One of the big things on our list is to implement a new memory model for the game. The reason this matters is that right now, it's hard to add more ships or structures into the game because of the infamous 2GB memory limit on 32-bit systems.
So in the coming couple of months, we're going to be working on a new update to Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity that implements this. After that, we can evaluate new opportunities in the Sins of a Solar Empire universe.
Is it too obvious to email or contact stardock support to see about fixing your account issue?
have you contacted support? They are good about fixing issues like this.
I guarantee you they are not gonna drop Impulse.
Edit:
Lets all realistic here, asking/wishing for a complete rewrite to include multi-core use is not something they can do in a patch. We are lucky they are looking a fix for the 2 GB limit.
I had to change my address and I contacted them after I realized I didn't have access to those things I purchased. It was without hassle.
They have a link on their website for issues like this ... I think?
Good to hear Star/Clad working on the memory issue! Hopefully this means significant increase in hardcode limits too. 7 Deadly Sins has about 10 more races we'd love to add
This is great to hear. I almost bought this game back in September but I decided not to because of the 2Gb memory problem. When this gets fixed I will definately buy this game, including all the expansions. I am always looking for new space based games.
One question though. I have a quad core and I saw some discussion on them. Can I run it with a quad core?
Well, quad core will not be a problem... it will run... at best, two core will be used at the loading... rest remaining single core...
Now, about the 2gb thing, it is not a real problem for the full game ( original sins + entrenchment+ diplomacy or Trinity )... it become a problem with mod or with any possible future expension...
By the way, almost all 32 bits game/application have these limit under windows 32 bits... the 2 gb thing is not something only limited to sins... in fact, it is not directly related to the game itself but how your OS handle memory...
I call Bullony. No mods running and I can't get half way through a large multi star map without it becoming a slide show. Small or medium maps maybe but why have the option for large and huge when they become unplayable?
And yes I am way way above recommended requirements.
Well, this is related to the single core problem and not the memory... you can have a huge multistar map with 10 player, along with the sins optimization mod... the game after a few hours will slow down and ram used can be lower that 800 mb !!!
With sins, you are better with a single core at 5 ghz that with a eight core 2 ghz...
Yes, the Buffs system and ship movement and AI workload, while working great on short small games, becomes a mess on huge maps and/or long games. And as with other Strategy games facing similar problems, the more you build, the slower it gets.
If they only used 1 thread per AI and implemented a pathtracing system that is thread-aware...
Wow this is great to hear. As someone new to Sins, I started with Trinity it is indeed good to know the developers haven't abandoned the title with such a annoying problem as the 2 gig limit like many developers would have done. My hats off to IC for this one .
Thanks for the new information. It sounds like I would be ok if I stuck to the Vanilla version of Trinity as far as the 2Gb problem is concerned. However, my quad core (I7 with each core running at 1.6) could be trouble.
@Todd79121.6 is indeed a bit on the low end. It will be fine for small to medium maps with short matches though. The people like us who are trying to get epic with huge maps are bringing sins to the limits. The slowdown in the late game appears to be caused by enormous amounts of fighters and (mostly) the trade and (to a lesser extent) the refinery ships.
Thanks for the update.
Sins is such a beautiful game to leave in the larch of awesomeness. Just look at some of the competition specifically games like Distant Worlds are on to some really good features, specifically the hole idea of exploration which I feel is very limited in Sins.
Im not a critic though, its dumped like 200hrs+ into this game Just my wish list.
Thank you.
Love this game. Can't wait to see what you guys are going to do with it.
Great news Some big editor doesn't have not your game following
I don't know if my current "bugs" in my latests game will be resolved by a new memory management but is not useless as it was a sword up to my head .
Just a question, with my knowledge, a 64 bits os will not completely resolved the 2go limit problem but just put off due to 32bits .exe; right?
Bye
@Loltak
Yes, the limitation in a 64 bit os is that the exe is not aware of a greater memory address range (pointers are still 32bit) , so it can only use 2 gb.
Thanx Frogboy! btw. when we gona get some 1v1? MSG me
Thanks for the reply, then os 64bits will wait a little bit
Once the 2 gig problem is resolved, how long till people start complaining they "can't run this game anymore with all this extra stuff" .
I used to be able to play Sins on my Commodore 64!
Get with the times or get left behind.
The game doesn't run now with all the extra stuff.
Hehe, good one!
I have been waiting for this for a long time. I almost gave up hope after hours of searching for any tidbit of info on the futue of sins. Developers, I thank you in ways I cant describe here. After I learned that you were addressing the 2GB limit, a Grin was instantly placed EAR to EAR.
Thanks again. Great update and I'm looking forward to it!
Thus do we invoke the Machine God.
