My brother and I play games together on our PCs all the time, and while we've been playing a lot of command and Conquer and League of Legends lately, I'm always on the lookout for something new. So does anyone know of a game that is a dungeon crawler type like Diablo, relatively cheap, and supports at least two players? I was gonna get torchlight until I found it was single player only, and I'm hoping somebody can help me out. Any mods that do the same thing would be great too. Thanks.
"Diablo esque"? You mean "live action rogue-like" (kids these days)
That being said, I can't really think of any since hell-gate London for the PC (that are also multiplayer).
Most recent:
Titan's Quest
Din's Curse
Dungeon Siege 2
Sacred 2
You may want to look at Din's Curse.
Dungeon Siege 2 counts as recent? That was half a decade ago... it and titan quest are older than windows vista... (it was longhorn back then) Back when the PS2 was at the top of the console charts and the nintendo DS just came out (ok, I'll stop now)
you didn't include Hellgate London? (while not the best, it is supposed to be a Diablo clone i.e. live action rogue-like. Supposedly it was also created by some ex-Blizzard North members, though you couldn't tell by playing it. )
Din's curse, that might very well be the most recent. (forgot about that one)
Din's Curse was this year.
I don't know about recent, but Neverwinter Nights 1 & 2 have some good stories to play through with a friend. With the diversity of character creation, you can really fill your role in the adventuring party.
If you really like the 'crawling' part of dungeoneering, the Storm of Zehir expansion of Neverwinter Nights 2 in particular will give you just the fix you've been looking for. It allows you to play to the strengths of each of your party members, even when it comes to who should speak up at different points in a conversation.
The only downside is that if you're not at least a little bit DnD savvy, you could be slightly overwhelmed when it comes to all the choices.
well i have been playing two worlds 2 which is pretty fun, titans quest may be old but it is also a great game for playing with friends.torchlight 2 comes out in the spring.never played dins curse but didnt read very many good things about it.read it was really buggy
I really like Din's. It may or may not suit certain people's taste but I wouldn't call it buggy.
Torchlight 2 will arrive next year, with a focus on multiplayer. Before that, Darkspore also lands. I'd wait for the reviews before touching Darkspore though, it has EA's taint upon it...
Personally, I'd recommend Titan Quest with the Immortal Throne expansion, particularly if you're into Greek, Egyptian, and Asian Mythos. (Though mostly Greek.)
Me and my friend have actually been replaying that recently with a new pair of characters, and I gotta say, I love it. Love playing the Corsair. (Defender/Rogue.) That's another great feature about the game, is the multi-classing. At Level 2, you take your first class out of Eight choices, Nine if you have Immortal Throne, then at level 8, or every level there-after, you have the choice of picking up a second class, which gives you a new, class-combo specific title. It may be old, but it's really a well-hidden gem. Super-linear like Diablo ONE. Diablo II had randomly generated maps, something TQ doesn't have, but there's a boon to not having randomly generated maps... You never get 'Act I' syndrome... I know, it seems counter-intuitive... Don't ask me why it's like that, it just is. And yes, I realize the actual dungeons in Diablo I were Randomly Generated too, but the path of the game was extremely linear.
And despite it's age the graphics and visuals are amazing. Reaching the peaks of the mountains in the third act, and looking down only to see fog really gives a sense of "Damn... Better not fall." Looking down on Magea's beach in Act I from the cliff above, and all the baddies are smaller... It's actually a very beautiful game. And you never get the Diablo II-esque 'Act III' syndrome either. "I'm in a jungle-y swamp. I'm in a monastery in a Jungle-y Swamp... I'm in a Sewer in a Jungle-y Swamp... I'm on a boat... In a Jungle-y Swamp." Every individual area in Titan Quest is actually crafted to be visibly different from it's counterparts somehow.
And let's not forget the classes... Really, you'll spend a larger portion of the game wondering what class you should take or what skills you should get than actually playing the damn game. This may seem bad, but it's not. The reason you spend so much time is because just about every freaking skill in the game, and every class in the game, is just plain good. Sure, some classes have a below average skill or two, but I'd say 90-95% of all the skills in the game will actually be useful. And the skill trees are awesome, giving a real sense of progression with every level, not like Diablo where you spend more of your time thinking, "Damn, I wish I was level 24 so I could get that awesome new skill." That's another thing about TQ. Skills aren't determined by levels, per se. There is a minimum level for acquiring the upper-tier skills, but it's a soft-cap, not a hard one like Diablo's. If you wanna rush to the top of the tree, you can just pump all your points at every level into your Mastery. You won't have any skills doing this, but Masteries are your best way of getting extra HP, MP, and stats. You get stat points with every level as well allowing you to further inflate your stats, though it's generally advised to save them, never put any into HP or MP, and only use them when you need to increase your stats in order to use Armor or Weapons. (Masteries are what the classes are called in TQ btw.)
Yes, I'm totally plugging here. It's a great game. It's Diablo II, but done right, and done better. You'll be playing through it every six months. It's a solid buy.
What about upcoming Magicka?

There's been at least one trailer.
Looks interesting.
same boat re: darkspore.
Here's a great diablo clone that supports co-op. Titan quest. It can generally be found on the cheap, has quite a bit of content, decent graphics, and is fun. I'd highly recommend that as a co-op diablo clone.

Expansion:

I think I grabbed them both on sale for like $10. Money well spent.
Yeah, Titan Quest is tough to beat. It's not too recent, but it runs well and looks good, if you get past the simplistic UI.
Also recommending Titan Quest. An excellent LAN game.
Loki? Not sure if that was multiplayer.Nothing exceptional - just yet another Diablo 2 wannabe.
Overlord has a multiplayer mode of sorts but I dunno if that's just deathmatch.
Couldn't get into Dungeon Siege myself. Felt like a long, dreadfully boring grind. Too much micromanagement to bog down the gameplay.
Titan Quest is prettier but still plays like a cheap Diablo 2 knockoff. Gets boring really fast.
Hellgate London would have been good if it's features had worked and the content / itemisation had been finished beyond the first 30 levels or so.Currently it's dead, buried, and sold off if I'm not mistaken. With any luck it will be re-released under a new name with a new reputation. =P
Or well... there is Diablo 2. =P
Jeez Gazz... Harsh much? I take it hack 'n slash games aren't really up your alley.... Especially if you're saying Titan Quest gets boring... And calling it cheap... Diablo II knock-off is totally... Well, not totally fair, but partially fair.... But in a further fit of fairness, any Hack 'n Slash RPG these days is a D2 Knock-off. Blizzard set the standard there, after all...
*shrug* I dig out D2 maybe once per year so it's not like I'm totally anti hack'n'slash. =P
None of the games I listed got the mix "just right". None of them were as captivating as the original - even with the benefit of hindsight! They are a lot prettier but essentially... meh.
About 2/3 through TC I just stopped playing. Discovery just seemed so uninteresting there. With D2 I can't just stop when getting to hell... and beyond. And I know these places already! No discovery bonus but still...
I'm not even trying to sell this as anything but my personal opinion. Why would I?Others love TC and DS and I don't mind if they do.
Well being a Diablo knock off is more about being hack and slash. It's about being a top down action rpg with heavily randomized dungeons. It's not necesarilly a bad thing though, I mean Diablo was succesful for a reason.
Regarding Titan Quest, there may be some disconnect between people who played the expansion and people who did not. I did not play the expansion and my thoughts were also that it was pretty shallow compared to Diablo. But I've heard that the expansion is a whole different ball game.
Could be. There was no expansion when I played it.
Gah! Now you did it. I created another necromancer. =/
Borderlands is a great Co-op RPG/Shooter. It's like Diablo: A huge amount of random generated weapons, four different character classes, skill trees, leveling, PvE and PvP. Your friends can join and leave a game every time they want. You can play Solo, LAN or Online. The only differences are the graphical style (I like it very much, not this generic photorealistic stuff which they usally use these days) and the fact that it is a 1st-person-shooter. Imho a great game (which was also very successful: they sold more than 3 mio. copies).
Totally agree. I love that game! The expansion packs are relatively inexpensive too.
Dwarf fortress, adventure mode.
I completely agree with this, it's probably the best diablo clone. (I actually think it's better than diablo with the immortal throne.) Class system is fantastic and even though it's old now, it's a very pretty game
Surely not the least bit multiplayer.
Din's Curse - http://www.soldak.com/Dins-Curse/Demo.html - A beter game then Diablo II in my eyes.
Pros - Better iitemization then Diablo II, much better then TitanQuest. More dynamic then Diablo II (The boss mobs have tasks / Quests / Spawn events). More variety in character customization then Diablo II / Titan Quest.
Cons - The graphics are more like Diablo then Diablo II (Much worse then Titan Quest). No master servers. No online Ladders. Small community.
-----------------------
Titan Quest offers better graphics and more character customization then Diablo II but the iitemization and lack or random maps makes it less fun to me then Diablo II (But I still play both).
Sacred 2 is a slower and longer game then Diablo II. Graphics are between Diablo II and Titan Quest. Itemization is worse then Titan Quest.
I can recommend them all but if game-play is more important to you then graphics Din's Curse is the best, try the demo.
