I saw a game on YouTube aaaages ago, and it was likely Steam. It was a multiplayer shooter, think it was first-person, if not third-person. You're in a cross-section hallway with a bunch of other SWAT/marine types and you just shoot back waves of zombies.
Any idea?
Sounds like Killing Floor.
Alien swarm
Left 4 dead
Team Fortres*irk*
+1 killing floor. The others do not fit the bill.
Sounds a lot like Killing Floor. One of my favourite FPSs.
Killing Floor is the winnar! Even found the exact video I had watched.
Thanks people, you win...my appreciation.
I assume it's still pretty active...
is this /r/ now?
If you mean "can we ask about games here, while also doing other things related to pc gaming?" then yes.
Ugh, I absolutely DETEST when a developer lies about a game's spec requirements. Well, I don't know what the official definitions of 'minimum requirements' and 'recommended requirements' are, but I assumed mininmum was 'the least you need to play the game, but expect plenty of lag, so what's the point?' and recommended was 'your game will mostly run smoothly'.
But no. My computer has a 2.8 Ghz dual core processor (don't know if Killing Floor takes advantage of dual core) and 1GB of RAM. The minimum requirements are 1.2 Ghz processor with 512MB RAM, and recommended is 2.4 Ghz processor with 1GB RAM.
I don't want to imagine what unholy computer rape would happen if someone tried playing this on the minium requirements. I can't play multiplayer because a multiplayer game goes like this: Attempt to join 10 games, fail. Attempt to join 11th game, succeed, game has ended, new map is loaded. One hour later: join game, first wave comes ski-ski-ski-skip lag ZOMBIE, shoot gun ski-ski-ski-skip laaaaaaag dead. Game over.
Would a GB or two of RAM make a difference? What are the REAL requirements for this game?
Had a similar problem with Portal (min: 1.7Ghz/512MB, rec: 3Ghz/1GB) - Game would be fine but as soon as portals started coming up, it would slow soon enough, sometimes I had to exit and reload the game (especially in the final battle). But at least it was free, and that a new level would be loaded to set the lag back to zero to counter this (knowingly or not).
So until I get a new computer or RAM, if it makes a difference, I just wasted £15. Single player doesn't even have AI bots as far as I know.
P.S. I'm just about to try it on the very lowest graphics settings, I had previously played it on medium. Recommended spec my ass...
Edit: Now it won't connect to the servers...WHAT THE FFFFFFUUUUUU
Well, the game probably needs 1GB of RAM to run well. You have 1GB total, but not all of that is going to be used on a game since your OS uses some etc.
1GB of RAM is completely pathetic and you really shouldnt plan on playing any remotely modern game with that amount no matter what the box says. Its just not an acceptable amount of RAM for PC gaming.
You really should upgrade that since RAM is cheap - no need to wait for a whole new computer.
Kraz, while sounding somewhat... harsh... Isn't off the mark. 1 gig of RAM is essentially the minimum required to run Windows 7. While you are likely running Vista, it's not too much easier on the RAM, and every other program running is taking a piece of that pie. The end effect is you require a lot more to run even semi-modern titles.
Luckily, RAM is the easiest and cheapest component to upgrade. Have a look at Newegg if you're American, or NCIX if you're Canadian and you will likely find something whatever your budget.
You can buy a flash memory drive too. The computer will use it like a swap file. Not as good as more RAM but could help a tad.
Well I have an Xbox 360 so don't really need to play anything modern.
Sins of a Solar Empire is an exception of course, that works fine. Plus Sims 3.
SWEET MOTHER OF GILBERT GODFRIED, just seen the cost of a modem.
I'm going to have to Ebay it.
What modems are others using without trouble/what's a good wired modem?
netgear DG834G - fantastic modem/Router
Got mine for 80bks in aus.
You should find it cheaper somewhere in the US.
Aus = Australia just to clarify.....NOT austin
Oops, forgot to put 'wired' modem. I'll assume the wired one is just as good. Thanks, I'll look that up. New it's £42, but completed listing on Ebay say £5. HA!
EDIT: Can the wireless version be used wired?
I have a BT home hub I haven't tried. I just dislike not being able to choose when I connect to the internet. With the home hub and the modem/router, it's connected always (something to do with LAN I think). This includes when the computer starts up, meaning it's unprotected for the period when the firewall and virus protection hasn't loaded up, or is being shut down. With the modem I usually use and am using now, I'm online when I click 'connect'. I have the say.
Oh and you won't find me taking a plane to America to buy a modem.
Modem or router? They are very different breeds. The modem converts the cable of ADSL signal you receive into something your computer can use. In NA, the modem is supplied with the broadband service. Routers, on the other hand, serve as a middle-man between the modem and multiple computers. I'm sorry if this is covering what you already know, but your use of the term modem is confusing me a little.
If you did mean Modem, though, you will need to specify whether it's a cable modem or ADSL modem. I don't know anything about third-party cable modems, but I'm using a TP-LINK brand TD-8840T ADSL modem and am enjoying it. It was a b*tch to set up, but I'm getting much greater speed out of my connection than I was with the "official" modem.
If you mean router, on the other hand, I've gone through a number of D-Link and Linksys models but haven't noticed a huge difference between them.
I'm not sure how to explain. I use a modem on my PC via USB (with no ethernet port incidentally), I use a modem-and-router-in-one for Xbox Live via ethernet. I'm not sure what the difference is.
I connect both to the phone line (though I can't connect both at the same time - I can't play Xbox Live if the internet's connected to the PC and vise-versa). Both are DSL.
The one suggested above is a Cable/Wireless ADSL2+ Modem & Router in one. Its backward compatable if you use ADSL.
You will be able to connect to the net through your XBox via the wirless component and be on the net on your PC at the same time.
And dude, for the love of god start using ethernet.....USB...."YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS"
Hope that helps dude.
Will defenitly beat the strange setup you have now. lol
I think that may account for some of your issues! Most especially your problems connecting you game servers. I also find it strange that you can't connect both systems to the internet at once. To be honest, that sounds a lot more like dial-up than ADSL!
Kooky Brits.
I notice you mention your CPU and your RAM for the minimum/recommended requirements but totally neglect to mention your graphics card. I see this a lot and truth be told the graphics card is one of the most important pieces of hardware in PC gaming, if not the most important. If your graphics card is seriously sub-par, an on-board, or worst of all one that shares your RAM that could be the problem.
Killing Floor says it needs 64mb of video RAM (required) but 128mb is recommended (this is a cheap/low-end graphics card today). If you have an on-board graphics card it may not have 128mb of video RAM. If you have shared memory your BIOS settings may not give enough RAM to the video, though if it's shared the more you give video the less you have for other stuff, especially after windows takes its chunk of RAM as others mentioned.
Actually, I have this same problem, but I think I know why.
For reference, I'm in America, using Comcast as an ISP. 2.5megs/down 1.5megs/up. Pretty sweet deal with the Cable TV and three free premium channel-sets included for like 60 bucks... Anyway...
When we switched over the the Internet/TV Package and the whole Digital-only thing went live, I had to get a new modem. Comcast told me I needed theirs. I ignored them. I wasted 60 bucks on a modem. I had them install theirs. (For reference, I'm living with my mom while going to school, and she's not exactly tech-savvy, so I handle all this stuff.) The tech was shocked that all my wiring was already in place. (Yeah, I learned how to do all that stuff when I was eight buddy, get over your trade-school degree.) He handed me the modem, confident I could figure it out, and didn't even charge me for the visit. Nice guy.
Now, we'd previously been using a LinkSys something or other Wireless Router/Gateway/Modem. We were, once upon a time, able to connect four computers to the same internet connection. There was a time where we actually had four computers in this house. But since we switched, we haven't been able to have more than one connected. We can't just Daisy-Chain the new Modem through the old LinkSys Router, and the new one just plain didn't work. I sent it back to LinkSys and got a full refund for a defective product. Explained a lot.
So, I went out and bought another one. Took out the Comcast Modem, plugged in my new one... Still wouldn't work... Though, stuff actually lit up this time, but I never got the DS, US, or Online lights to turn on... Can't fathom why. Plugged in the Comcast Modem again.
So here's what I'm thinkin'... Something about the nature of my connection requires that I have their modem plugged in. Comcast has also told me that I'm good to go on Home Networking, so all I need to do is plug in a Hub or Router and watch the magic work... We've already established that my old Modem/Router/Gateway won't do the job, and I assume this is because of hardware conflicts with the nature of the Modem/Router/Gateway. My mom and I have been looking absolutely EVERYWHERE for a plain old Router Hub... And we cannot find one. BestBuy doesn't have them, our Mall doesn't have them, no one freaking has them, and without actually knowing what to look for, we can't find them online without shipping them from Canada or the UK... So... My Question is...
Where the hell can I find just a plain old Router Hub for sale, and are there any recommendations on what I should look into? Internet is a life-style in this house, and sharing my hard-earned computer with my Mom is frustrating... And so is sharing our hard-earned internet via one computer... HEEEEEEEELP!
What's strange about it?
USB works fine and I get what I'm given, the modem only has a USB port. The modem/router has an ethernet one too, hence why I use it for Xbox. It's just I've had absolutely no reason or need to change until Killing Floor wanted to be a big baby. Seeing as I can't get refunds on Steam, I'll go with getting a cheap used modem/router/modem-router instead.
I won't be connecting Xbox wirelessly though, Microsoft rip people off as much as it is.
What accounts for some of my issues?
My video card is NVIDIA GeForce 7300 SE/7200 GS. Though my last computer had an intel one and I didn't have any problems with it. If I assume looking at 'approx. total memory' in dxdiag is video RAM, I have 512MB of it.
A bit of that went over my head, and I don't know what constitutes a plain ol' hub, but the only hub I know of is a BT home hub. That would be British though, and probably not any help anyway.
