Greetings!
My reign of terror has come to an end. Now, Kael’s reign of terror begins.
I’m not disappearing entirely but after v1.1, Derek Paxton (Kael) will be calling the shots on the day to day on the game and design implementation (at Stardock, the Project Manager aka Producer is the god of the game). I’ll be returning to my traditional role at Stardock on our games (AI and high level design input).
We’re working to get a beta of v1.1 out the door as soon as possible so people can start seeing the improvements we’ve been making for the past few weeks.
With that said, it is my honor to introduce you to Derek Paxton. Prior to joining Stardock, he was a Project Manager at Novell and known to many gamers as the creator of the Civilization IV mod expansion, Fall from Heaven.
Yeah! This is just like the end of Fable 3 (no spoilers). Now Elemental can either become a glorious land of good or a corrupt and evil land of industry and production
Anyways, can't wait to experience 1.1 as I've been taking a break for a while and waiting for an opportunity to come back to Elemental.
Hopefully he goes to see the Red Wings instead.
make the game like master of magic and then build upon that!!!
This.
No really, that would be great, please!
Well, except for the Great Drakes and Elf Knights.
Gotta admit.. I like this idea
Wasn't that the whole original idea? Seems like the biggest problem that got in the way was a rather large mismatch between design ambition and product development resources, that persisted until too late a date. But Brad owned up for that.
At this point, I don't that's what will be done - too many half-features are in that people like to scuttle them all in favor of simplifying down to MoM. I just hope that Kael is smart about which features he choses to focus on, and which get temporarily or permanently turned off/tuned out. For instance, in the recent 'what do you like' thread, dynasties rated very highly - but clearly needs a lot of work, since champs don't matter than much and the choices you make within dynastic development aren't particularly 'interesting.' So perhaps an overall of the champion system will be on the last for 1.11 or 1.2 or whatnot. But I hope they don't try to do that AND muck with a bunch of other things at the same time, it's clear that more focus on the team is needed.
Hopefully we'll still run into you on the forums, Brad. They would certainly not be the same without you.
And a big welcome to Paxton (Kael). I've played FFH2 a ... 'bit' and there's a lot of good imagination and imagery there; he should be able to make some interesting changes.
I'm sure Brad'll still be around. Maybe not as much on these particular forums, but he'll probably be putting up Dev Journals with cool AI Feature videos, kind of like the Multi-threading stuff from however long ago that was. (Not that long ago though.)
Edit: Every so often.**
Oh I'll still be around making journals and such.
It'll be much more of what my role was like on GalCiv II and Sins.
I think after the some of the challenges Demigod and Elemental had at launch it'll become pretty obvious in the future that if the CEO of Stardock has to intervene to personally manage the project on a day to day basis that something has gone amiss.
That's one of the reasons why I've made it such a high priority to recruit industry veterans for PMs going forward. I don't want there to be another case in the future where I'm having to jump in. I love working on games but I can't dedicate my full time to it and if I am, then it removes lead designer role from the project who is supposed to remain reasonably objective of the game -- as a game -- and not as an engineering project if you get my drift.
I have been able to get a ton of AI stuff done this week which is nice. The interaction with AI players will be a lot better.
So... Release the BETA!!!!
Please?
Yes yes! Please?
I've gone to bed far too many a night* now... Wondering... "When will it come?"
I've woken up far too many a day now... Wondering... "Will it be this day?"
I sleep fitfully...
I wake feeling drained...
I wait, and wonder... And wish... "Perhaps today?"
Little freestyle poetry and wishful thinking for ya'all to see and say 'Aww, how lame,' at...
*: That's not exactly accurate most of the time....

I'm quite pleased that more is going into Elemental, though I like the framework already set up and existence of many features in the game (customized Sovereigns/factions/units, ability of sovereigns to progress like the other heroes, development of faction through varied research options, etc). I'll be happy to see more depth added and hopefully even more options/variety. I look forward to seeing 1.1 with the population of cities having more impact. Anyway welcome to Kael but also glad that Brad is still with the project as well, looking forward to additions to the game rather than replacement of it
Awesome news. Good luck new-producer-dude.
I have mixed feelings about this. FFH2 is my second-favorite computer game of all time (Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is #1), and I have spent more hours playing FFH2 in all its various versions and incarnations than any other game. I just checked the FFH2 site on Civ4 mods to see if they were doing anything for/with Civ5...and saw the news about Kael joining Stardock.
So . . . no more FFH2. But it'll be interesting to see what Kael does over here.
I bought Elemental today. It's downloading even as I speak. ..bruce..
The team said they would not be doing FFH2 for Civ 5 way way back. So the casualty doesn't arise from his place of employment changing.
