Hey all. After reading most of the Honor Harrington books I've decided to start work on an Honorverse mod for SoaSE. Figured I'd throw up a thread to see if there's any interest, and to keep those who are interested updated on progress. For the moment I'm working alone, mostly to see if I can, so updates will depend on school and whatnot, but it's always motivating to know people are waiting on you.
My plan is to make Manticore and Haven the only playable factions in the game, since I feel that I'll be able to stay closer to the books if I don't have to fit the factions to existing Sins balance. Research trees will be largely untouched (based off TEC) in the diplomatic, civilian, and possibly fortification sections, though Military will be changed to fit the universe. For the moment, the only real planned difference between the two factions is that Haven units are cheaper and weaker, seeing as they traditionally just copy Manticore tech, but this may change after I finish the Manty faction.
While unit caps will be unchanged, the number of available ship types will be slightly smaller. Combat frigates/cruisers will be: Destroyer, Cruiser, Heavy Cruiser, Battlecruiser, and Battleship (utility ships are out for the moment, unless I can figure out how to make them fit the universe). Capital ships will be Dreadnaught, Super Dreadnaught, Super Dreadnaught (Pod), and LAC carrier (toying with making SD(P) and Carrier unlockable through research). Couriers and Frigates will replace colony ships and scouts respectively.
Weapons will be cut down to missiles, grasers, and lasers, with energy weapons having the appropriate short range. Each capital ship will have the ability to impose their wedge to reduce incoming damage (and make them immune to energy weapons if I can figure that out). Unfortuantly, as far as I can tell there's no way to get rid of forward shields, so there will be no throat or kilt shots.
As of 28-Oct-10 I've started on the modeling and new race creation, though I'll admit I'm still learning the coding side as I go.
If anyone is interested in helping just PM me. Like I said, I want to try and do as much on my own as possible, but thats probably unrealistic, especially with coding and whatnot (I'm a designer and 3D artist, not a coder).
I'll try and keep updates somewhat regular and post screens and whatnot as I go.
Finished modeling the first ship; a Manticorian Super Dreadnaught (Pod). I'll start doing the texture work sometime this week, but in the mean time I've got a few renders on my deviantart page (my browser does not seem to like the "insert picture" button on the reply box). http://aspasticninja.deviantart.com/
Decided to try and adapt the Manticore and Haven fleets to the mechanics of the game rather than try to stick 100% true to the mythos. This way they'll be better balanced with the existing races, which should make them more fun to play.
I do not want to be a party pooper but Honoverse mods have been started and shutdown time and time again throughout the past 5-6 years. David Webber (when asked by a Homeworld 2 modding group) stated that he while he did not have a problem with people making things, Baen Books would likely serve a cease and desist notice. And they were served that notice. I would be careful distributing what you have because technically, as far as the lawyer world is concerned, that is copywrited material, owned by a large publishing company, that will likely have no problems serving you a cease and desist notice. So, unfortuanately we can't really go down this road the way that you and many others have intended. Warnings have been issued and I would rather not get sued or get IronClad sued somehow. We can make Sins play like the honorverse but we can't use the honorverse ... Maps on the other hand are a different story. Don't ask me how but they are. Copyright rules and junk, they're wierd.
Just something to think about. We have already attempted to get some stuff working in another 'honorverse' thread. I have mostly steered towards trying to get an honorverse map up and running. I am currently running into a few issues and am hoping to get some feedback from IronClad themselves about the issues. It is possible that these issues have been updated in a 'hopefully' soon patch from IronClad. I will be exploring a potential mod/fix from myfist0 later tommarow. If this fix works, I will continue work on the map.

Well shit.
Thats odd, considering that the guys behind Star Trek, Star Wars, BSG, Stargate, etc seem to have no problem with it. Ah well, guess i'll have to do something else; only had one model done anyway. Thanks for the heads up.
The big thing here is that Baen Books has a very tight grip on their IP. Really I wish they didn't, because I would LOVE to see something like this come to fruition. Biggest thing is I just wanted to save you the trouble of putting a lot of time in and then getting shut down with a C&D order.

When I get some more work on my map done later this week I'll shoot you a PM. At the very least, we should be able to have a nice long campaign map across the Honor Harrington universe with the TEC, Vassari, and Advent.
Thanks for the heads up man, I'm gonna switch to making my own mythos and whatnot. Little more work, but no one will get mad at me or whatnot. I'll definitely take you up on that offer too, I could use a long match with actual people for a change.
The good thing abouth not living in the Us, is that you can tell a us lawyer to go sit on a pole when he comes with hes cease and desist.
This is a US Hosted website or at the very least US affiliated. Just in the same way that the US lawyers work with other governments to track down illegal file sharing, prosecuting someone for infringing on IP and copywrite is actually easier than knabbing someone for downloading an mp3.
You can tell them to sit on a pole, but it's not going to do you a whole lot of good, especially if you have content that is hosted on a us or us affiliated website. Those websites are considered US property and us lawyers for one have jurisdiction because of that. Just a thought. ^_-
