You know how it goes.
Game company releases game. They put out a series of bug fix patches for a bit and then they move on until it’s time to get you to buy an expansion pack or two until it’s time to do a sequel. If the initial game gets panned or negative reviews, it’s typically abandoned.
And people wonder why gamers have gotten so cynical.
As people in our community know, that’s not how we do things here.
Those of you who hang out here have seen us discussing the upcoming version 1.1 of Elemental: War of Magic. This is a partial screenshot (right side of my screen) of some of the UI updates we’re doing.
For those of you who want to try v1.1 in beta, we plan to put out the first beta in about a week.
Until the end of THIS MONTH (October 31), anyone who purchase Elemental: War of Magic, will get the first two expansions for the game for free (as well as our normal long-term support for the game itself).
The purpose of this entry is to provide space for people who have questions on what we’re doing now versus in future updates.
This gripe is just plain silly.
This is awesome news man, I have never heard of such an offer. I mean, two free expansions for free, that's KRAZY!!! And yet, I can see how it makes sense business wise, entice customers to buy early so as to establish a nest egg for future development or whatever.
But surely we gamers have not grown so cynical as to suspect that 1.1 will be an "expansion." Come on guys let's not be paranoid.
Any information about the expansion secret?
What is it???
Just to avoid any misunderstanding (to all the people asking in this thread):
1.1 -> Free patch which leads to the final version of E:WoM and will be the basis for a demo.
1st expansion: Addon which will be free for everyone
2nd expansion: Addon which will be free for everyone who purchased E:WoM until the 31st of october.
Further expansions: ...will follow because Brad is addicted by its own Elemental universe.
I think there will be more than enough support for the game in the future. I am not afraid. Stardock isn't called Activision. And Brad isn't called Bobby...
Good to see target date. You have a lot of things to do guys. Keep it up!
Thank you JeffSteel and Tobear for clearing this up for me.
I wasn't being cynical, merely misinformed. Whether that was because others were also misinformed, or I read something into certain posts that I shouldn't have, I can't say, but I'm leaning towards the latter. Pretty heavily.
sure sounds like fun
i cant wait!
Account merges can be problematic at Stardock. To this day, I stilll have to enter in GC2: Dark Avatar reg manually if I reinstall.
I'd definitely make sure your reg is there with Stardock (you can get an autoemail from support from within Impulse listing all your regs- it's the question mark on the top right, then look up serial number), and save that just in case, so if there's a problem you can be hooked up.
The price questions are only about the Impulsedriven store.
Will there be a Gold Edition that offers Elemental + 1st expansion for the current price of what Elemental costs now?
What will the expansions cost?
Will Elemental drop in price sometime soon?
I'm basically wondering if we will get Elemental and its two expansions (when they're released) for the same price as Elemental costs right now.
I would have bought it if I had the money right now....
Any Word on a new Manual?
Doesn't matter how many free expansions you give me they won't get played unless I can understand the New Interface ... Cuz ya know i have completely given up trying to understand the old one.... Even though some people have put together a really nice faq, I still need a Manual or even at this point I would take a long tutorial readme. I know I'm in a minority here but I don't like to push buttons just for the sake of pushing buttons.... for example I still don't know how to access the new city screen because no where is it stated where the button for it is....
so for now the game is Installed, Patched, and NOT being played
Am I an idiot? Maybe, Maybe Not,
I understand that every game has a learning curve but come on a little help Manualwise from the experts (who made the game) would be the best freebie the company could give me at this point....
I don't think there will be further expansion than 2 because they will be working on EWoM 2 by that time . For those who ask, if the date hasn't change, the first expansion will come up about three to 4 month after the 1.1 will come out, the second expansions will come around one year after the first expansions. Correct me Frogboy if I'm wrong or if the planning have changed.
Yeah, I know how it goes. Boy meets game, boy dumps game. Boy then hooks up with game's sister only to find out she's even more of a lying skank.
Ok, there's something visible in the screenshot that has really been bugging me. Normal forest trees are billboards for performance reasons I guess, and there's nothing wrong with that except they absolutely do not go with the 3D trees that you see in tile props. Both tree types look fine individually, but together they look horrible. The resource 'Old growth forest' looks as out of place near the forest tiles as they do out in the desert. Some consistency with the way trees are rendered would really help to communicate the atmosphere. As it is one or the other tree types look very 'fake' depending on which one you accept as 'real'.
Many of these updates sound like they will be wonderful and I will certainly be looking to enjoy these goodies when they do hit.
I think the new emphasis on citizens will be very helpful in the spamming of cities etc.
Question: Are there things that will be done to improve the end game scenarios in the near future? I always feel like after turn 500 or so, it begins to get harder to determine what to do to actually win the game.
Also, Elementum? How does one actually get this element in the game. I always get to this point where I have soldier types that need this to be created but have never seen the resource in my games since some time abo.
First two...?
Suddenly i'm glad i pre-ordered Elemental last year .
It was pure impulse (no, not the program). If i had not pre-ordered, i probably wouldn't have bought the game until it was released... and considering the launch, i probably would've skipped it.
Hey, I haven't complained about anything since the game came out. I really don't like this particular thing, the same way I don't like it in Civilization. It is not a silly matter to me! It's not going to make me hate the game obviously, but it is going to kill immersion for me.
I especially like the faction power bar.
SWEET! Muchas Gracias. Very cool.
so what are the two expansions going to do. anyone have anyidea.
Sigh, ok, guess you've got me. Been following this game anxiously since the start of summer, but waited to see reviews first for confirmation and now... still waiting to hear this game has been polished into what I'd been hoping for. Even if I wonder how that works from an economic standpoint, enough of a deal to get me to cave and go buy.
That said, how exactly is confirmation of purchase date handled? Specifically, if I'm going to buy, might just order the (apparently not too) Limited Edition; however, would do so off another site (Amazon) where I can get free shipping and save a chunk of change. It obviously wouldn't be in my hands to register in the next couple days and not directly purchased from Impulse for your records there; would this exclude me from eligibility for the free expansion despite having actually purchased it prior to the deadline?
To quote Frogboy earlier in the thread:
"You need to have updated it from Impulse at some point. It's the only way we know the date."
You need to get a copy registered on Impulse by Sunday. So its too late for mail order at this point. I guess you could consider how much the expansions are likely to cost versus the savings you could make buying elsewhere. The Galciv2 expansions I think sold at around $20 each at release, but there is no indication yet on how large Stardock intend to make these.
You see that's why I'm not too bothered by the poor state of the game at launch, I pre-ordered and was part of the beta so I just see this as an extended beta. I can fully understand why those who didn't want to take part in the beta would be upset about the launch. But we are where we are, Stardock have aknowledged their mistake and are making a pretty substantial gesture to those who suffered the poor state of the game at launch you can't say farer than that, (they also will give people who don't want to wait for patches their money back so lets move on and enjoy the goodness or call it quits and play something else).
Myself I'm sticking around becaue I like Elemental and like even more the game it's becoming.
Sorry if this was already answered:
1. What are you doing about inheritance/dynasty/death of soverign in the future?
2. What are you doing about diplomacy?
3. Siege tactical combat(with fortifications and all!) coming anytime soon?
4. What are your plans for the spell system? Can you just copy MoM and be done with it?
Overall I much prefer games with tactical combat versus instantous combat, although this game and some others with tactical combat have trouble working with ranged units. In the Disciples games Wizards are almost useless in quick combat compared to actually playing it. This game, archers amd Catapults are iffy, I had a stack of peasant consistantly bet incoming catapults with the AI. At first I did quick combat figuring I was going to get slaughtered and my peasants won and the kept winning v incoming catapults, the peasants should have got slaughtered like wolves v sheep. I would generally like to see a more aggressive computer AI in tactical combat games in general this one included. What I miss about master of magic, is the computer was aggresive on impossible and surviving for 30 minutes in some games was a challenge. You are shifting away from your original focus about micro managing when you first created this game, you were against it you are shifting towards it. I do like it enough though to try some of your other work like Galactic Civilizations II. 0000000000000..................
Just one quick other thing, sorry about that didnt realize the zero key got stuck, out of the games I have played i do like your level of customer service with Elemental War of Magic. You answer a good sum of questions overall, and I like the 2 free expansion idea. i feel some other games give you a cold shoulder when they are working out some bugs or fixes.
