So I've checking out the upcoming DCUO and today I signed up for the beta. At first I wasn't excited about it at all because I figured it would be just like every other MMO out there and more or less a DC version of City of Heroes and control like WoW like every other MMO out there. Today I watched some of the Dev interviews and found out you actually get to move around and dodge and stuff during combat, meaning actual player skill is involved. If someone were to, lets say, throw a car at you, you can actually get out of the way and if it misses you then you don't get hit. It isn't like WoW or CoH where you hit the button to use the skill then watch it go off and hit your enemy and they have no way to dodge it. That alone might make it worth playing.
My wife has wanted us to get into a game together so we could have something to play. Depending on if I get into the beta and actually have a chance to try it out will determine whether or not I pick this up for both of us. If it plays like they show it to and player skill is actually used during the game's combat it could be really cool. I also found out the game will allow the players to make either a hero OR a villain right from the start and have PvP incorporated into it instead of waiting for an expansion to do it like CoH/CoV did a few years ago.
Anyone else think this might be good? It's at least worth keeping an eye on for now. If I get into the beta I'll give everyone a sneak peak into what the game is all about.
I loved CoH, the only MMO I played for a long time, and I played it for 5 years. But yea, there wasn't really crap to do at level 50, other than help others levels and make new alts. But, man, I loved that game so much. Thinking about getting back into it still. But I know it wouldn't keep my attention for all that long any more, yea, I think it's sunset for CoH. I would just sit for hours playing with the character creator on that game.

DCUO doesn't even give you that, though. The character creator pales in comparison to CoH or CO's. It has a couple different skin types, but the costume part is sorely lacking in customization. Unlike in CoH/CO where you make your costume and can get gear without changing your appearance, DCUO has a more traditional loot system where each piece of gear is its own costume style, and you get your basic equipment slots (boots, belt, back, gloves, etc).. so your appearance always changes.
Fuck that game then.
i may or may not have played beta and it may or may not have felt like a crappy mix of CoH hero building and UI and Tabula Rasa's fps-like aiming and control.
Sheesh online games lately are so horrid. I think it'll be another nine years yet before something interesting comes out.
Still, I'd love to check out the DCUO world.
Oh what the hell, I picked it up. Thanks pacov
And now, I'm going to go try to do something other than play games. Heh.
couldnt agree with you more!! Though im hoping/praying/sacrificing-cute-animals (JK) that planetside 2 is good, i loved the first one!
Actually you have the option of making the new pieces of gear you pick up disappear while still giving you the bonus from wearing it. Otherwise everyone would just start looking the same and the game would be stupid.
If smedly is involved then all the cute animals and girls in the WORLD wont save Planetside "2". They havn't shown any progress in MMO design since they failed and failed the last time.
Well that's good at least. Didn't know that was an option.
Yeah, this is wrong. In DCUO you can choose what every single slot looks like. Your choices come from every single piece of armor you have ever equipped. So you can lock in your appearance at level 1 and never have it change. Or you can mix and match every single slot with everything you have ever picked up.
It might not be as customizable as CoH/CO, but its much better than most MMORPGs.
There are quit a few permutations between power sets, weapon types, and travel type, so customization is actually quite good IMO. The focus is really more on the gameplay rather than the character creation though, which is just fine with me.
Can you be a Green Lantern? Just curious...
I stand corrected on post-creation customization But in essence, I wasn't entirely wrong.. each piece of gear still has its own set, so you have to collect every "slot" type from that set if you want it completed, and the initial costume options are pretty lacking in comparison to CO/CoH.. so unless you have collected gear for a whole costume set, you're still going to be mismatched, you just don't have to show it.
well that certainly is true. But I think its a fun system so you can tweak your appearance as you go along. At first, I thought it was a bit annoying as the character I designed looked radically different after picking up this and that gear (eg to the point of why did I even bother to design the character), but understanding how the system works is great. As they add items, that should give > customization that anything out there - you just have to work for it. My theory at least. At any rate, I don't think I'm getting this one after the beta. Maybe give it a go in a few months after more reviews are in, etc.
Peeps on VE3D seem to think its the better game with worse character customization in comparison to CoH and CO.
Mine gets to me tomorrow so I guess I'll find out.
I've heard a lot of negative buzz around this game in the MMO beta tester circles, so I'm not really interested at all. Besides, there's only time for so many of these at once, and the one I'm looking forward to right now is Rift.
doot de doo...patching patching patching...I wonder how many years ago these DVDs were pressed
I'm just going to wait for Hungry, Hungry Hippos Online.
well hey at least patching that shouldn't take too long. unless they accidentally shipped the wrong game or something
I got into the DCUO Beta for the last two months it existed. Unfortunately my health didn't let me play "too much" but I managed to get a good 50-60 hours or so in as I had a laptop and could play from bed for part of that time. It's a fun game, it is, BUT....it does have blatant flaws. One of those flaws being a lack of players. For something supposedly in the final stages of beta and with as many people as they let in those last few months, the world should have been crowded. There were only two beta servers and I had characters on both. No matter when I would try, in two months time I only saw the server status for one of the two say the population was "High". Every other time it was either "Med" or "Low". Even the time it was supposedly "High" the world was almost devoid of other players. Most areas where a practical "ghost town" when there should have been hundreds, if not thousands, of other beta testers running around. I've got some inside news from the big "Beta Event" they had the last night of Beta when Jim Lee, Mark Hamill, and other stars were actually supposed to log in with their characters and the server load was So Bad they couldn't stay up and people couldn't stay logged in for more than 30 seconds at a time without crashing.
While the game may be fun, the character creator is pretty limited, and they obviously don't have the hardware set up to handle true "MMO Capacity" levels. The PvP is fun and interesting because of the mechanics involved though and being able to move and dodge has great effects in game-play. Still, until they get the hardware issues resolved, get a Lot of bugged quests fixed and working right, and finally decide on a good game-play mechanic so that they won't have to re-write the combat mechanics (which they did three times in a little more than 2 months) I'd say stay away from DCUO for now unless you're a Real Die Hard DC Fan.
Hope that helps some guys.
Well, my initial impressions are completely different wrt to the population. I've only got to level 7 but I already feel like this game is going to be a good long term investment (unlike Champions Online heh.)
I won't say great until I've put more time into it, but it sure seems great.
I have to give them credit - City of Heroes has really reinvented itself time and time again. The invention mechanics have grown on me, and the auction house was long overdue. The Architect expansion led to my spending hours just tinkering with new mission designs, and the new Alpha Slotting has me pulling out my level 50 characters and having fun at the higher-levels again. There is almost too much to do in the game with so many ways to get what you want, gobs of TFs and seasonal mission sets. The servers always look full but the total lack of PvP/Base Raiding has been annoying me lately.
The market just feels too watered down anymore. There aren't enough people to give MMOs that "crowded" feel of old for more than 6 months after release. No clue why we need another MMO, let alone one set in the DC Universe...
Because it's way more fun than Champions Online and I stopped playing City of Heroes like six years ago.
Well, ten days later and I'm still having a hell of a lot of fun. There are definately people on. I think most of the buddy keys are expiring right about now, but it still seems pretty solid...we'll see in the next few days of course but I can't complain.
Did several Alerts and they're pretty awesome too. Haven't done the Legends matches yet.
Champions Online just went free to play as well but I don't care enough to download it anymore for some strange reason.
