Hello friends old and new!
After a lengthy hiatus, I've come back around to enjoy some GalCiv2. While playtesting my Major Minors, I remembered a discussion in another forum about playing a game by democracy. It never went anywhere, but I thought I'd bring it up here. The basic concept is that I'd play a game and post reports, and the participants would discuss and vote on the course of action. The exact details and pace of the game are up for discussion.
I think it would be fun and I'd like to give it a try. Anybody else interested in such a thing?
Edit Oct 10, 2010: After some discussion, the game is on! A new topic has been made, so if you're interested you can find it here: https://forums.galciv2.com/398308
Tolmekian: I don't think that the impact of 1 vote is an issue, on the contrary; I see it as a motivation for people to vote since their vote will have an impact
AdmiralMaximus: indeed, this thread is being used to discuss all sorts of things; the other one is used to vote (in character) on the approach that will be taken in the game. If both are mixed, the thread would become rather messy and hard to follow who's voting for/against what exactly.
What he said.
Wasn't there voting on this thread as well?
I just want to know because I want to make sure I don't miss anything while reading this
What you see on this thread is people posting summaries of the voting in progress. More like "here's what the tally is so far". This thread is really reserved for out of character discussion of things that would clutter up the game thread too much.
Things like this, for example:
Viceroy Gunray mentioned the value of our economic treaty. While it's true that the Thalans would part with their Economic Capital, I don't think I want to take advantage of it. For whatever reason, it's on a planet with only 0.47b pop. I suspect that planet has been sending out colony ships. Anyway, I just feel that it wouldn't be right to swindle them out of it.
I like TMS2224's proposal to only trade our treaties out to friendly civs, ones that we're on the way to strong relations with.
*I take credit for that idea. And yes, this is for out of character stuff like this!
Yay, someone agrees with me! I said this because I don't want to esablish a treaty with the Thalans, for example, if we're only at warm because we might want to kill them later...
I agree with you on this as well TMS
Just a note in explanation of my remarks about our weapons pick, which wouldn't work very well in-character:
The unique Arcean second-tier mass driver tech, Neutron Drivers, are not particularly good. Compared to the pulse cannons most of the other races get, they take a long time to research and are a little expensive. About the only thing they have going for them is that they're small. As we are planning to go neutral we have no particular need to research any weapons (beams are by far the best when evil), but I think that it's best to stick with beams anyway for the reasons I gave in the main thread
Yay, dos personas like mi idea!
The above comment is in Spanglish.
So are we going to take a vote this time or not? If we are, I'd be willing to write the ballot again.
Surely you meant to say 'Siii dos personas le gustan mi idea' hehe
Siii es una palabra imaginary en Spanglish.
I took the lack of complaint as a go-ahead to move forward. There really isn't much to put on the ballot this time, anyway. You've all given some good advice, and I intend to follow it.
I agree with your idea about the beam weapons, and relations with the Trilarian in general. I'd rather trade with them for weapons than the Yor. With a 5 week research time, it's a big deal to score Beam Weapon Theory rather than research it ourselves. I just need (read want) to run out one more year in my latest playtest, then it's on to the game.
Been a while now... when's the next report?
Tonight. Sorry for the long wait. It was quite a busy quarter. Not everything is all happy and friendly in the galaxy . . .
uh oh...
Hah. It's not all that bad, but there are hints of coming troubles. I guess I won't be able to post tonight. Way past time for beddy. Just too busy lately. Tons of snow doesn't help, since I have to go out and move it all while it keeps coming down.
Soon.
Alright. This sucks. Sorry this is taking so long, but now there's another problem. Looks like Imageshack has changed its format such that it's going to take me a long time to post pics. They want me to sign up to get the direct link, and they changed their url formats so that the thumb url isn't just a slight change from the direct image. The end result is that I just didn't have time tonight to post anything. As it is, I was just going to post all the pics with minimal commentary. Now I have to find a way to do this without it taking a minute or two for every image.
Probably this weekend, now.
Don't worry bout it dude-by the looks of things everyone really busy anyway-never apologise for providing us so much enjoyment however delayed
If imageshack is giving you too much trouble, maybe Photobucket is a better alternative? It's been ages since I used either but I see Photobucket being used quite often for large AAR's with tons of screenshots.
I use photobucket and it is a lot less annoying than imageshack, I know because I used to use Imageshack. (Like I say to _______ when I get really annoyed with school, "Don't blame ME if the school burns down..." )
OMG. First of all i want to say how sorry i am to have left without saying anything. I went for a 1 month vacation where i thought i would have internet, i didnt. By the time i came back, i had forgotten about this completly. Im really sorry.
I request to be part of the council again.
I hope you guys can forgive me.
Meh, tis alright. You've been a stalwart of the Initiative, so I figured it had to be important for you to disappear. Hope your vacation was everything you hoped for and more.
As for your request, it is unnecessary. As a founding and integral member of our group, I had no intention of removing you from the council no matter how long you were away.
And now to put together the next report . . .
Thank you very much for understanding. I'm just clumsy like that sometimes.
As you all read through the report, I'd like for you to consider what the long term goals of the Initiative are. I mean, it's easy to decide on the best thing to do right now, and it would be easy to choose the path of least resistance to slide quietly into victory. What I'd really like to see, though, is some set of goals and ideals that the Initiative will struggle for whether or not it makes the most sense according to conventional wisdom on how to win the game.
For example, I've always been partial to minor races. Given that the Initiative is a force from a federation of minor races, it makes a bit of sense that we wouldn't necessarily be the conquering types. I'd actually like to take that a step further. We've made friends with the Gnolams and Trilarian, and I want to defend them. The way things are going, that could draw us into some trouble that we don't otherwise want any part of. I say so be it. It's too easy to sit back and pay everyone else to war on each other while we reap the rewards.
Besides, it would give us more things to vote on. We've had a few sessions with no real opinions and I'm a bit afraid that we could be heading downhill.
Ideas?
Go for it. I mentioned before I'm not into "roleplaying" and I haven't really tried to do it in the thread, other then trying to avoid contractions. However, I very much am into roleplaying my civilization in games, and I wholeheartedly support trying to live up to the ideals of the Initiative even it gets us into trouble.
Although if the Thalans go after the minor races, I'll be advocating throwing them under the bus. Right now the Thalans are just too qllx'ir powerful.
