Anyone here play Company of Heroes Online? It's a free MMORTS game by Relic Entertainment. It's currently in open beta, and anyone can sign up to play. I've never played any Company of Heroes games before, but I started playing this one today and I love it. I was surprised to see that it didn't lag on my relatively old (2006) non high-end computer, and I was using the default graphics settings in the game. The game has both a single player campaign and online multiplayer. Also, RIP Brian Wood, the lead designer of the game. Here's the game's official website: http://www.companyofheroes.com/
Most Company of Heroes veterans despise the game due to the fact the Relic more or less left the original game in a broken state after a bad final expansion, and apparently abandoned support for it for this instead. Even if you didn't come from the original, CoHO gives lopsided matchups due to a player either having flat out better units due to playing more, or buying them; having skill alone not decide the match is the most absolutely stupid design you can go with in a RTS, and only one other RTS than I know of was dumb enough to try this model (EA's flop Battleforge).
The original game goes on sale for < $5 on Steam sales all the time. You are generally better off going with that and then using one of the many excellent mods for it. The Eastern Front mod in particular adds the Soviets to the game, adds some new units and models, fixes most of the glaring balance problems Relic left, and is heavily supported and updated by the mod devs. And it works with just the original game, you do not need any of the expansions unless you want the OF factions.
Im a COH fan. To me its the best RTS out there. The idea that 4 well placed guys can hold off 12 guys is something rare in RTS.
Im in the open beta as well, and im loving the XP and leveling system. Its maybe too addicting.
"Oh if i gain a level, i can invest points into my rangers"
I love the idea of skills and perks being permanent. Actually wish WC3 did this, since i havent played that game in years. And i think adding permanent leveling to any RTS could add spice to the game.
Enough of the game has changed to make veterans interested as well. COH Online takes up like 90% of my gaming time
I was about to denounce Sloan and Grove for replying to spam, but thought I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt. Who knows, maybe this guy just really likes to inform others about free-to-play games.
So let's look at his history. I see Solace773 has two types of posts.
The first type is much like this one; a paragraph about a free-to-play online game that, while not exactly hyping the product, is too positive to be considered unbiased. Suggestive of spamming.
The second type of posts Solace773 makes are much more overt. He's asked for permission to send unsolicited PMs to forum members in one thread, and has suggested the forum incorporate a system to openly link email accounts to forum accounts in another. They reek intensely of spamming.
I'll let you draw your own conclusions.
Yep, this guy is a spammer. He did crap like this on another forum. All he did here was add a few numbers to the end of his name.
To Solace: How did you enjoy your free banhammer courtesy of the HLP staff? I bet it will go real well with the one you're about to get from the staff here.
For proof of his evil, as part of a spam thread, he listed Stephanie Meyer of Twilight fame as one of the greatest people in history. You cannot get any more evil and/or pants-on-head retarded than that.
Now that I read the whole post, I noticed now that he claims single player in COHO; which it does NOT have. It is multiplayer only.
no singleplayer campaign is there to play for free too
Wow, that's a total kick in the nuts for anyone who bought it then. I'd say the first post isn't totally spam then, as if you've never played CoH and enjoy RTS' you might as well try the campaign for free.
ya i told my friend to go buy the game. 2 months later FREE ONLINE game with FREE campaign.
No sign of the expansion pack factions. Im sure they will come though.
Another thing that gets me is his claim that Brian Wood was lead designer on COHO. He is (was ) a lead designer at Relic, but as I understood it, COHO was developed out-of-house in an Asian studio (And was live in Asia a while before it was opened to NA), which makes it seem like Solace is just name dropping.
What I REALLY don't get, though, is why the man bothers with this spam at all.
