The tournament began on 10/16/2010. Please be aware that this tournament will not begin and end on 10/16/2010. It will actually take several weeks to complete.
Background
In April 2010, we started our first community demigod tournament. The tournament was 2v2 and certain demigod selections were restricted. The tourney carried a crash prize donated by people in the community and was won by the two man team of zen_god and King_of_thorns. For more details on that tourney, read up here: (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/380837).

Alternates
Prize
There will be a cash prize > $600. Jongalt will be handling the collection of the money for this tournament. We are discussing the prize money in this linked thread: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/398009. We appreciate any contributions to the prize. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PAY TO PLAY IN THIS TOURNEY.
Here is how we will be splitting the winnings from the pot:
Demigod Selection
Each 3 man team must use the following formula to make their Demigod character selections based on a 7 point maximum. Be aware that no duplicate demigods are permitted on the same team. This means you cannot choose random.
Tournament Time Zone
The official time zone of the tournament is set for EST US time. Players that are outside of that timezone are certainly welcome to play. However, if there are significant scheduling difficulties due to players unable meet at the same time, the team furthest outside of the EST zone will most likely be disqualified or forfeit that match. This rule does not excuse folks in the EST zone from any responsibility. All parties in this tournament should endeavor to schedule their matches with other teams and try to be as flexible as possible.
Decision Making Panel
This tournament will be governed by a decision making panel consisting of pacov, McShane, hedgie with Jongalt as an alternate. The panel's purpose is as follows:
The panel's decision on all matters will be the final word for this tournament. And last, the members of the decision making panel will not make any decisions on the games they are playing in. We didn't have a panel in place for the first tournament and that was a mistake.
How will we handle crashes
If there is a game crash, the players involved in that match should see if they can come to a consensus on the probable outcome of the match. If there is no clear winner, the 2 teams should replay the match using the exact same demigods and sides (light/dark). If there was a clear winner at that point in the game, then that team should be awarded the win. If the 2 teams disagree on the outcome, then the decision making panel will review the replay of the match and render a decision. Be aware that the decision making panel must agree that a specific team was going to win or the results will be thrown out and the match redone. Please be thoughtful if you want the panel to review a match.
How we will handle invalid game states
The lastgamereplay file is still created in the event of an invalid game state, so it is still possible to review the results of a match. In the event of an invalid game state, players should attempt to resolve the issue exactly the same way as game crashes. If you believe foul play occurred, submit the replay along with any screen shots, etc, as evidence and the decision making panel will review. If there is a CLEAR consensus that a team is willingly triggering invalid game states, that team will be disqualified after a thorough review of the facts and will no longer be able to participate in the tournament. If your game does crash, it might be advisable to take a screen shot of the crash as proof. Be aware that we know invalid game states can occur without any sort of foul play, so please be mindful when submitting requests for review.

Registered Alternates:
Please be aware that other players are elligible to be an alternate based on the rules outlined in the alternates section. I've simply left this list here so teams will know at least a few of the players that might be available as alternates.
For any of you that would like to use it, we have a public ventrilo (voice chat) server that you are welcome to use for the tournament. Even if you don't have a microphone, if only 1 person on your team does, it can be very useful to use voice chat (at least 11 of the registered teams will be using voice chat. Why not you too?
Here's all of the info you need to get started:
Here is where you can download the client (its free): http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php
Here are instructions on how to use ventrilo to connect to a server: http://www.ventrilo.com/setup.php
And here's the needed server info:
Server Name: Lagwar's Ventrilo ServerHostname: oxygen.typefrag.com Port: 50216
I have created some password protected channels for those of you that would like to use the server. Scroll down until you see channel Oh My Demigod. You will then see tournament channel 1/2/3. The password for these channels are demigod. Let me know if you have any questions.
Well, to be fair and honest, i wouldn't either if i had to play in a team with people i don't know and i have never played with.
As much as i'd like to win the tourney, that doesn't mean i'd only play in a stacked team with, let's say, Cheesov and CowButtLove, though. I'll be fine with whatever teams the community agrees on.
But let's face it, most people are gonna want to play with the best possible teammates and friends, i'd be surprised if Shane didn't want to partner up with Orcun and Mith, for example.
the thing is, that most people want to play with people they know, not necessarily stacked
Yup. The way I see it is if we just make our own teams, we'll end up with a couple super teams... a couple pretty decent... and some poop. But if we draft like I described, I think we can get 4 pretty good teams going at the very least.
But the problem is that the most of the top players in the game play amongst themselves and therefore are friends so teams will be stacked by default. I don't blame people for wanting to play with their friends however hence this has become a challenging hurdle to overcome.
Take for example,
Team 1: McShane, Ocrun and Zen. This is definitely a super team, howabout we add a few more:
Team 2: Pacov + Hedgie + Rawr;
Team 3: Soccer + Cowbutt + Peter;
Team 4: Myself + Nomilarac + Thundercles
3 of those 4 are super teams (we'd have 4 super teams if i dropped and was replaced by someone else lol)
if we had 200 teams sign up for the tourney, anyone of us could look at the list and says teams 1, 2 & 3 are heavily favored to win the top 3 spots in the tourney. If we decided to make the tourney full random demigod selection then it may even out slightly but that is usually dependant on who gets the shitty demigods or the demi's they aren't familiar with. Or we could even do 1 random assassin, 1 random general and 1 full random. But then again the outcome of the game is most likely dependant on who doesn't get the DA lol.
Plus most of the tier 1 - three person teams have been playing together (or played together) quite a bit so they know how to compliment each other quite well.
IF we try to break up the best players then some of them won't even want to play. However, let's face the fact that there are some very competitive players in our community who's desire to not lose a game or take the opportunity to criticize others outweighs their desire to be civil.
But I digress.
So, in honor of everyones post lets take a vote:
Should we create a rule that says only one tier 1 player per team (or draft or similar)? Yes or No
Yes = I want a draft, or similar
No = Let the teams form themselves.
My vote is No
Also, for those that said they will donate, their votes are worth 3 points, non donators votes are worth 1.
I'll play anything and abstain myself from voting.
You're too kind, thank you. I also vote no, to me the chance of an upset is more exciting then creating parity. Who knows what could happen when there's limited Demigod choices.
Sounds good bro!
You're not doing it right, you need to get in several games with pacov and then intentionally make mistakes. They should be glaring enough that he notices.
I vote NO too, better chances for the tourney to actually happening, and for not getting again into the shady area of who decides who's better than who .
Also, i'd love to play along many of you guys, Cheesov, Cowlove, etc... but since Hedgies participation is in the air and the Thunder kid needs a companion, i propose Father Jongalt, Thunderclap and myself the NOM as the first formal team for this tourney. Get ready your shields babies, here comes your fireballed-spit penitence!
I vote make your own teams and see how it goes... with everyone so out of practice and competitive games so hard to find at this stage of Demigod's lifecycle, all you tier 1 players might not be as good as you remember yourselves to be. And if you are, it'll still be fun as long as its round robin style so us untermensch can play amongst ourselves and win a couple games.
I'd love to play with Jongalt, especially now that he's been moved up to tier 1.55 but I'm not ready to give up on peer pressuring Hedgie into the tourney. I'm going to throw out more crazy ideas to try and stall for time...
Awesome Nom! We'll have to get Thunerclap on board with that !
First things first-- ninki!!! I need u to re-email me ur address!!!! PLEASE!!! I will send you your magazine I promise I haven't forgotten!!
PLEASE FORGIVE ME NINKI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [*Single Tear*]
A. I am only here because Jongalt sent me a msg on facebook so I have kept to my creed (of abstaining from the DG forums)-- and to get ninki's address.
B. Jongalt, ur barely tier 8, much less tier 1.25...
C. I would play for fun, without putting up money (because I don't care about the tournament, not because I don't have it).
D. I would only play if teams were fair, and I know that's not fun for some people, but it's not fun for me to get raped by a stacked team. In fact, it's not fun for anyone to get raped by stacked teams, that was probably the longest running topic on the forums forever (premades, etc.) but I also digress..... The point is, the only fun tournament for most is a fair one, so what if McLame isn't happy, he's the only one who complained besides McGay (soccer-mom) and we all know he is the worst about stacked teams.
E. I still love you Shane, hopefully we are at a point in our relationship where I can call u McLame and we can laugh about it later as u kill me 10 times in a row next time we play.
Stay classy San Diego (translated= a whale's vagina)
I would vote No to a draft simple because I can be really nasty when people don't do what I expect them to do. Soccer, peter, Zen, Pacov, Nom and Rawwrr all can take my bitching fairly well and any any combination of these guys I would be glad to have as my team. Well in peters case I would want rawrr or soccer as my partner simply because I think they are the only people that know how to play with peter's play style the best.
On a side note:
YEAHNEIL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd still vote yes to a draft, but I'll go with majority rule here.
edit - everyone who's planning on participating... get your vote in ASAP: yes for draft. no for make your own teams.
Then we can lock down the tourney rules, etc - which I somehow think will be easy, but maybe I'm being silly.
Draft is how professional sports do it. So yes.
i vote no for obvious reasons besides do tiers even mean something anymore i barely play now like most of the people here
heh... some of us maintain our standing.
Sorry, can't vote yes or no without knowing if there are going to be limitations on demigod selection. I abstain for now.
I'm sure guys like Lebron McShane just want to play with their friends, and it just happens to be that their friends are the best players still around and will rape any team that plays them... which might be fun for them but less fun for others. If we can handicap stacked teams with demigod limitations then everyone is happy in theory.
Of course if the tier 1 players just want to get their jollys by rolling over the lesser skilled teams the whole tourney, that might not work out so well.
Lol well obvious that's true if let's say I'm playing with Orcun and Renzo, and we choose Oak, UB, and Erebus every game, but it's pretty clear by now that it's not going to be like that. I'll make you a deal, I refuse to participate in the tournament if we don't use one of the proposals for character selection put forth by either Hedgie or Orcun.
It's alright NEIL! I'll message you my address.
Also, it seems as if most people just want a reason to play. Why not just play the actual game.
Okay so my internet limits got reset today 8D
What this means is I have 5 GB to play with. I'll be on this internet for the next month, again. I'd like to test it out to see if it works in a few 2v2s and 3v3s with and without Vent and the amount of bandwidth it uses in an hour. If it off-the-charts then ... yeah this isn't going to happen. If it is something modest then I'll see if I can do this.
McShane: Oh don't worry, I'm not sure I'll be playing if we aren't using some sort of Orcun/Hedgie approved Demigod diversity formula so it don't matter to me. No offense, but I don't find tier 1 players as impressive when they're not all playing tier 1 demigods so I think people picking their own teams should still be fun despite Pacov's reservations. Howeer, I could be very wrong and look rather foolish... especially without Hedgie around to make me look like I'm a decent player.
Hedgie: From my experiments using a laptop card... eh... well... ummm... wish me, Jon, and Nomi good luck in the tournament. Sorry bro, that 5G is gonna go really quick.
Votes:
Booo brackets!
Yay round robin format!
Booo draft!
Yay team Nom/Jon/Thunder!
Booo Orcun/McShane/Renzo playing UB/LE/Oak!
Yay Orcun/McShane/Renzo arguing who has to play Regulus so the others can play tier 1!
Ehrmm.... hmmmm... Thunder.... we might actually have a similar problem (also, Orcun regs was nothing to laugh at).
Since Jongalt's best is Oak, yours is Tb, and i'm a primmarily strong demigods player (LE, UB, Rook, Oak), we might be in a bit of trouble here, cos my best non-T1 DGs are TB and Reg, and we don't want a TB-Reg team. I might have to start traning and playing again with Sedna and Oculus, it's been a long time since i play anything but Reg.
Ah well, we'll sort it out somehow
Neil you're always funny guy! I'm curious what magazine you are sending. If i had to guess it would be a signed copy of Pride ?
Check PM Nom (on the nomilarac account)
There will definitely be some sort of demigod restriction. We'll iron out the details after we get the current vote process done. We'll brain storm then vote on the system. Currently I'm partial to the point system mentioned in Orcuns post (I don't know who the creator of that system was).
People who have voted:
No: Jongalt McShane Nomilarac Cowbutt Mithrander Thundercles (assumed) (12 votes)
Yes: Pacov Yeahneil Lord Orion Teseer (7 votes)
People who need to vote even though they posted in the forums and ignored the vote question: Hedgie, Ninki, Zen
(hike up your skirts, grab your balls and Vote ! )
People on the list who haven't voted: Ruiprsg StiffyG bloowoel volen generalG Orcun Pangea
(please let these people know they need to vote)
As you can see the non-voters could easily change the outcome.
Let's set the voting end time for this Sunday at midnight EST
In the meantime please submit your suggestions for the demigod restrictions once submitted we will vote on them. Your suggestions could be variations of the below or something new. Pacov, what do you think?
My suggestion:
Pick one of these two (rook or UB) Pick one of these two (Oak or LE) (all other demi's are fair game)
Orcuns suggestion:
1-DA.
2-Reg.
3-Qot,TB.
4-Sedna,Occulus.
5-Oak,Le.
6-Rook,Ub.
And the total amount of point that can be used to make the team is 13.
Nomilaracs Suggestion:
1 - Rook, Ereb, UB, Oak
2- Sedna, Occulus, TB
3- Queen, Reg, DA
Choose 3. Your sum must be at least 5. (so Rook, Oak, Reg is legal)
You fellas can sort what dg combo's are allowed however you like. I'm sure you guys will come up with something reasonable.
Its good to set a deadline for the decision to draft or make your own team. Just stick with the Sun at midnight cutoff and go with majority rule.
If we end up going with no draft, I haven't lined up a team, so if you want me as a teammate, pm me or discuss on vent. Be nice to have a team that can compete with the top dogs.
