This thread will cover all of the relevant rules and registration information. Please see below for all of the details.
The tournament began on 10/16/2010. Please be aware that this tournament will not begin and end on 10/16/2010. It will actually take several weeks to complete.
Background
In April 2010, we started our first community demigod tournament. The tournament was 2v2 and certain demigod selections were restricted. The tourney carried a crash prize donated by people in the community and was won by the two man team of zen_god and King_of_thorns. For more details on that tourney, read up here: (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/380837).
Tournament Format
Tournament Rules
Alternates
Prize
There will be a cash prize > $600. Jongalt will be handling the collection of the money for this tournament. We are discussing the prize money in this linked thread: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/398009. We appreciate any contributions to the prize. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PAY TO PLAY IN THIS TOURNEY.
Here is how we will be splitting the winnings from the pot:
Demigod Selection
Each 3 man team must use the following formula to make their Demigod character selections based on a 7 point maximum. Be aware that no duplicate demigods are permitted on the same team. This means you cannot choose random.
Tournament Time Zone
The official time zone of the tournament is set for EST US time. Players that are outside of that timezone are certainly welcome to play. However, if there are significant scheduling difficulties due to players unable meet at the same time, the team furthest outside of the EST zone will most likely be disqualified or forfeit that match. This rule does not excuse folks in the EST zone from any responsibility. All parties in this tournament should endeavor to schedule their matches with other teams and try to be as flexible as possible.
Decision Making Panel
This tournament will be governed by a decision making panel consisting of pacov, McShane, hedgie with Jongalt as an alternate. The panel's purpose is as follows:
The panel's decision on all matters will be the final word for this tournament. And last, the members of the decision making panel will not make any decisions on the games they are playing in. We didn't have a panel in place for the first tournament and that was a mistake.
How will we handle crashes
If there is a game crash, the players involved in that match should see if they can come to a consensus on the probable outcome of the match. If there is no clear winner, the 2 teams should replay the match using the exact same demigods and sides (light/dark). If there was a clear winner at that point in the game, then that team should be awarded the win. If the 2 teams disagree on the outcome, then the decision making panel will review the replay of the match and render a decision. Be aware that the decision making panel must agree that a specific team was going to win or the results will be thrown out and the match redone. Please be thoughtful if you want the panel to review a match.
How we will handle invalid game states
The lastgamereplay file is still created in the event of an invalid game state, so it is still possible to review the results of a match. In the event of an invalid game state, players should attempt to resolve the issue exactly the same way as game crashes. If you believe foul play occurred, submit the replay along with any screen shots, etc, as evidence and the decision making panel will review. If there is a CLEAR consensus that a team is willingly triggering invalid game states, that team will be disqualified after a thorough review of the facts and will no longer be able to participate in the tournament. If your game does crash, it might be advisable to take a screen shot of the crash as proof. Be aware that we know invalid game states can occur without any sort of foul play, so please be mindful when submitting requests for review.

Registered Alternates:
Please be aware that other players are elligible to be an alternate based on the rules outlined in the alternates section. I've simply left this list here so teams will know at least a few of the players that might be available as alternates.
For any of you that would like to use it, we have a public ventrilo (voice chat) server that you are welcome to use for the tournament. Even if you don't have a microphone, if only 1 person on your team does, it can be very useful to use voice chat (at least 11 of the registered teams will be using voice chat. Why not you too?
Here's all of the info you need to get started:
Here is where you can download the client (its free): http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php
Here are instructions on how to use ventrilo to connect to a server: http://www.ventrilo.com/setup.php
And here's the needed server info:
Server Name: Lagwar's Ventrilo ServerHostname: oxygen.typefrag.com Port: 50216
I have created some password protected channels for those of you that would like to use the server. Scroll down until you see channel Oh My Demigod. You will then see tournament channel 1/2/3. The password for these channels are demigod. Let me know if you have any questions.
are you absolutely positive you have the same version? If you have an old version and simply try to install the newest version it stays the old version. You have to manually delete the old one. Easy way to tell is to go to the mod manager and confirm that you all have the same last 4 numbers of the version number.
It was seriously a pain the last time uberfix updated because of this problem. We experienced it multiple times, usually because someone was like "ya i downloaded the newest version you linked me" and it only takes one person to have the wrong version to cause the crit game right after you launch.
I agree with 4Nana here. The modding system isn't completely intuitive. Here's how it works. Whoever is hosting a game hosts with uberfix version 27 (for example). Because the HOST loaded up uberfix 27, that is the EXACT version of uberfix that will be used in the game. Normally, no one else can join unless they have that mod installed. Sometimes, its possible to join a game like I mentioned with a previous version of uberfix installed. If that happens, the game WILL result in a critical error when demigod attempts to confirm that everyone is using the same game changed mods (this is a feature that keeps me from creating a mod where I start with 1,000,000 gold and everyone else starts with nothing). Anyway, we've seen this in the past when users have differing versions of a mod. Once EVERYONE has exactly the same version, then the critical errors are gone.
I think I might simply things by creating a new version of uberfix and repackaging it and giving it a brand new UID. That should resolve any confusion. I asked the folks that maintain the uberfix mod to provide an updated version and update their post, but they haven't been available for sometime - so I'll likely just handle things myself. In the meantime, just do a simple test. Delete any version of uberfix you have installed. Have 3 of your buds download the latest version of the mod from here: http://code.google.com/p/uberfix/downloads/detail?name=UberFixv103_RC2.zip&can=2&q=
Have 3 of your buds install the mod (technically only the host needs to install it). Host a password protected game. Have the 3 buds join and launch. If you experience a crash, please post here.
Fun side note - it MIGHT be possible to get trousersnake69 back for this tournament. Maybe not, but maybe. For those that don't remember, he's a tier 1 player and quite good. He hasn't played since the last tourney, but perhaps could be persuaded into coming back. If not, I'm going to keep bugging him for a bit to see if he's willing to start playing some dg again. Nice guy.
edit - I brought this up with a few of the guys in vent, but we were thinking about trying to do some live broadcasts each week of a few high level games including some live commentary. The folks I talked to sounded somewhat excited about that, so it may very well happen. So, we'd announce the players in a specific game in advance, announce a start time, and then provide a link where everyone could watch the game live and get some commentary. Likely, either 4nana or I will be providing the commentary for these games unless we are actually participating in them. Anyway, I think it will be fun. We will likely have to try this out before the tourney starts, so stay tuned to this thread and we will likely post a link sometime over the next few days with an example game for you fellas to watch.
I think if we do that we would need just one person doing it. The only thing is that we were concerned about lag last time. I'm pretty sure I still have the software installed to do it.. but I can't remember if it lagged the game or not.
I have a concern with the new rule regarding having to play 2 matches a week. It shouldn't be a problem in theory, but I would like to have it a set number of games, lets say 4-5, rather than matches.
Our team literally has a 12 hour time difference so we might be able to get 1-2 games in with another team but then have one of our members will have to go to sleep, go to work, go pray to Mecca... whatever it is, we'll need to play the rest of the games in our match another day.
I don't think our team will be the only one that will have to play some matches on different days, and I'd rather not we all have to beg the tourney commissioners for time extensions even though we're playing plenty of games, just against different teams.
I'm going to make a big effort to play as many matches per week as possible, and have informed my girlfriend that she's going to feel the back of the pimp hand if she bothers me about it... but it is going to aggravate me a bit if people give my team grief if I'm not available for two matches the week my sister is visiting.
Agreed, I think the rules need to be a bit more laid back then they are now or we will end up seeing 2/3 of the teams DQ'd
Tracking the games won't be a problem at all even if full matches aren't complete. I might be able to get the spreadsheet done today for the tracking. I'll most likely do it in google docs so it can be viewed by others.
However, with that said, if we set the minimum to 4 games per week it will take 12 weeks for the tournament to end, assuming that people only play 4 games per week. Personally i don't think 6 games per week is out of the questions. That's 2 games a night for 3 nights. If only 6 games are played each week then it would take 8 weeks to complete. With that said, i wouldn't be surprised if there is a 50% drop-out rate.
Maybe we should set a 50% completion date and a 100% completion date. This would allow time for the holiday's and flexibility of games. Your sister is coming to visit so your game time will be limited, therefore with a percentage completion date these games could be made up before & after that visit. I think a lot of players will face similar problems.
I propose an eight week schedule.
50% completion by Monday November 15th
100% completion by Monday December 13th.
Personally i would rather see the 100% completion or uncontestable top 4 teams by Friday December 10th that way the top 4 teams can complete the playoffs by Monday December 20th. This way they get a nice Christmas bonus. I would also suggest these as "maximum" dates and would urge everyone to complete earlier. If so then the playoffs can be moved up as necessary. I also wouldn't set 50% completion as a Hard Number, this means if you are at say 45% completion then your teams situation can be reviewed by the panel of judges where they will determine if a team should be removed from the tourney. The final decision would be up to the panel obviously.
How does that sound?
j
Well - I think it goes without saying that the panel would review the various instances where teams are actually trying to get their matches together and having issues. As long as the teams that did not get their matches in for that week are actively communicating with the panel, then exceptions can be made. But if there is no communication with the panel, then it makes logical sense that those folks aren't actively trying to get their games in. And in that case, they would be disqualified. The goal of the rule is not to see people get disqualified - its to make sure people are actively trying to get their games in. I think we learned pretty clearly from our last tournament that if we don't set the bar for getting games in, that people will slack off or postpone their games... and this tournament will take the maximum amount of time we allow for it. That, in itself, might not be a bad thing, but I really don't want to drag this thing out a ridiculous amount of time.
Pacov: I get that this is the sort of thing the panel is for, but I think the less arbitrary things are the better. This sorta thing just bothers me, like a ridiculously low speed limit that you're not supposed to worry about because the police won't pull you over unless you go over it a certain amount. How much faster do you have to go before you get a ticket? Oh, you'll find out when you get the ticket...
Jongalt: Yeah, I was thinking 4-5 games minimum on an off week, but I like your benchmark system better. There will be plenty of teams available to play early, so we could just take a look November 15th and see if there are some teams that just aren't into it and are holding things up.
How about a solution to two problems? One the scheduling of games, and people worrying that they might not get all their games in on time, and two, the twenty or so people who still haven't found a team.
What if we allowed each team an alternate? It would keep us from having to dump all those willing players (bad for the community) and it might save a few teams with scheduling issues or RL issues for getting DQed (bad for the community).
I know for one, that always getting 6 games a week in may be a stretch for us, though we will do what we can. There are weeknights I can play and Chiefy can't, and vice versa. Everyone on our team has a wife and kid, and you know how that goes. I'd love to have someone else to call on if 5 people could play but I couldn't.
Also, and this is crazy, I know, but just throwing it out there, teams could play 4 on 4, if both sides agreed, since it wouldn't affect anyone but the two teams involved. If one team demured, the other would have to abide by that (no bullying them into letting you go 4v4 'cause you know you have a stronger alternate). I know a lot of people won't like this because we have worked so hard to get agreed-upon rules in place, but the way I see it, the more people still playing and loving this game, especially at a higher level, the better for all of us. If 2 teams did decide to go 4 on 4, the rule could be altered so that each team had 8 points distribute, effectively adding just a Reg or Da, or mixing up the usage of tier 2 Dgs a bit. I don't think 1 point would suddenly create any broken combos.
Like I said, the last part is just a crazy idea. However, I do think that with 20 unassigned players and only a little over a day to go, and several of the organizing, enthusiastic, players questioning their own ability to get games in, having official alternates might be a really smart idea.
I'm not necessarily opposed to the idea of alternates as long as they are not currently participating the in tournament. It would be up to the team utilizing an alternate to determine how much that alternate should get as a payout if that team ends up in the money. I suppose on the down side, it could be used like calling in a pinch hitter - and that could give another team an unfair advantage over a team that doesn't have an alternate, but I personally don't think that its really a big deal. Anyone all that opposed to this?
At any rate, we won't be randomly assigning alternates to teams from people that have registered and have not been able to form a team. There won't be any random assignments, period. Players are still responsible for forming their own teams. I know a few people have been looking for a good third and haven't been able to sort things out. I also assume that several folks that have registered haven't made much/if any attempt to form teams. And it stands to reason that those folks would be highly unlikely to get in 6 matches a week if they can't even form a team in 2-3 weeks.
Please - if you have already registered and do not have a time - start PMing folks in the forum, whatever you need to do, and get a team formed up. Remember - registration closes tomorrow at midnight and all of the folks without a partner will be out of the tournament (unless we adopt the alternate rule - which, I suppose, we HAVE to finalize today).
edit - and I'd still like to have several folks commit to some specific times on Saturday that they will be ready to play in a game. It would be a great way to kick off the tourney if several of us are around at X time and ready to get some games in with whoever happens to be available.

The top part will be the actual results. For the games played either a zero is entered in for a loss or a 1 is entered in for a win. The data will have to be entered in twice for each game/match.
Me Nom & thunder played ourselves and won, so i put ones in our column. Just kidding of course, i just added that in to show the color change and how the totals work. Its pretty simple, which is good.
The bottom part will have each match & game entered, the date played, and the date that the replays or screenshots were received. Each team will have to submit a replay and screen shot of each game. I would suggest that each team designates a captain that is responsible for submitting the replay and screenshot. We don't really want to deal with multiple submissions from the same team.
Each team is required to save their own replay of the game for each game for the duration of the tournament.
I would like to say that each game only has 1 screenshot and 1 replay submitted but the team responsible for the submission would come into question which will just cause confusion.
The submission process will be outlined in the OP by Pacov. My suggestion is that i get emailed a copy as well as a designate of the panel. I would recommend Pacov as the panel designate since it will just eat up Hegie's bandwidth unnecessarily. My email address is my name at gmail.
Currently i'm the only person who is capable of editing the spreadsheet. I'll open it up to the panel once approved.
Looking for a team.
Can any of the players with no team or group of 2 PM me.
I will be around by 9pm EST on Saturday night. I have to verify if Thunder and Nom are as well.
I think an alternate will be fine however the alternate can't already be on a team.
Matches and games played with an alternate would be final and not up for dispute because they used an alternate.
Also, would we want alternates as "free game" can 1 alternate only be an alternate for 1 team?
ig. Maxsteel is an alternate for my team for one match, can he be an alternate for another team at another time?
As far as cash split for any alternates, that would be up to the team and alternate. I personally won't deal with that drama.
The 4v4 idea is kinda cool. I would assume the map to be my personal favorite - Leviathan - however i think that this will cause more problems than its worth. We also did set the rules as a community and we would have to modify them to fit a 4v4 situation. Plus there would be monetary split issues as well as demigod selection issues. I think it would be too difficult with such limited time to come up with a 4v4 scenario.
we'd like to register as a team: ME, Shred_Demon, and pangea__2
Added. Thanks!
Lol you accidentally put me on team 3 also Jon.
I like the alternate idea. I vote yes as long as they aren't still in the tourney.
We should probably add a rule about alternate accounts just to have something in the rules. Kind of obnoxious if some of the alternates are just guys from another team.
Ok - so I really doubt there will be much opposition to having alternates (especially based on baddaddy's points listed above - should help people with scheduling conflicts to keep the tourney moving right along).
So the rules for alternates will be as follows:
Anything I should add? Any objections?
Sounds good to me pacboy, thumbs up to your alternates rules
When should we have the cut off date for registering an alternate to a team? Should we have a cut off date?
I'm thinking through a scenario...
Let's say my team might not require an alternate to get our games in, so I don't sign one up now. If I do sign one up and he plays and we win some money, he gets a cut. If I sign someone up and he doesn't play, then he won't have the opportunity to play for another team (but probably still deserves some sort of cut of the winnings). Let's say somewhere down the road, someone on my team can no longer player for whatever reason - are we screwed because we might not have an alternate? Just some thoughts.
I don't think there should be a cutoff date.. also I think if a team falls apart, it shouldn't prohibit one of the people on that team who still wants to play to play as an alternate. So.. for example.. say soccer and cow decided "fuck it.. I'd rather play SC2 and stop doin the tourney" .. you should still be allowed to be an alternate on another team after that point.
If anyone is free and can hop on the vent, I'd like to try some quick tests with a tournament version of uberfix. Its actually just the same release as in the op, but with a different name and UID. This way, everyone will definitely have the right version and that should take care of that. If it works, I'll post a link to the op and we'll use that version.
Yes, those are the details that I forgot to mention in my case for alternates in the first place. It certainly should be up to the team to decide how to split the money; some alternates may play a lot, some may not.
Also, I can *tentatively say Chiefy, Lord_Orion and I can play a match starting around 10pm EST Saturday. I just have to confirm with Orion.
