The tournament began on 10/16/2010. Please be aware that this tournament will not begin and end on 10/16/2010. It will actually take several weeks to complete.
Background
In April 2010, we started our first community demigod tournament. The tournament was 2v2 and certain demigod selections were restricted. The tourney carried a crash prize donated by people in the community and was won by the two man team of zen_god and King_of_thorns. For more details on that tourney, read up here: (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/380837).

Prize
There will be a cash prize > $600. Jongalt will be handling the collection of the money for this tournament. We are discussing the prize money in this linked thread: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/398009. We appreciate any contributions to the prize. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PAY TO PLAY IN THIS TOURNEY.
Here is how we will be splitting the winnings from the pot:
Demigod Selection
Each 3 man team must use the following formula to make their Demigod character selections based on a 7 point maximum. Be aware that no duplicate demigods are permitted on the same team. This means you cannot choose random.
Tournament Time Zone
The official time zone of the tournament is set for EST US time. Players that are outside of that timezone are certainly welcome to play. However, if there are significant scheduling difficulties due to players unable meet at the same time, the team furthest outside of the EST zone will most likely be disqualified or forfeit that match. This rule does not excuse folks in the EST zone from any responsibility. All parties in this tournament should endeavor to schedule their matches with other teams and try to be as flexible as possible.
Decision Making Panel
This tournament will be governed by a decision making panel consisting of pacov, McShane, hedgie with Jongalt as an alternate. The panel's purpose is as follows:
The panel's decision on all matters will be the final word for this tournament. And last, the members of the decision making panel will not make any decisions on the games they are playing in. We didn't have a panel in place for the first tournament and that was a mistake.
How will we handle crashes
If there is a game crash, the players involved in that match should see if they can come to a consensus on the probable outcome of the match. If there is no clear winner, the 2 teams should replay the match using the exact same demigods and sides (light/dark). If there was a clear winner at that point in the game, then that team should be awarded the win. If the 2 teams disagree on the outcome, then the decision making panel will review the replay of the match and render a decision. Be aware that the decision making panel must agree that a specific team was going to win or the results will be thrown out and the match redone. Please be thoughtful if you want the panel to review a match.
How we will handle invalid game states
The lastgamereplay file is still created in the event of an invalid game state, so it is still possible to review the results of a match. In the event of an invalid game state, players should attempt to resolve the issue exactly the same way as game crashes. If you believe foul play occurred, submit the replay along with any screen shots, etc, as evidence and the decision making panel will review. If there is a CLEAR consensus that a team is willingly triggering invalid game states, that team will be disqualified after a thorough review of the facts and will no longer be able to participate in the tournament. If your game does crash, it might be advisable to take a screen shot of the crash as proof. Be aware that we know invalid game states can occur without any sort of foul play, so please be mindful when submitting requests for review.

Registered Alternates:
Please be aware that other players are elligible to be an alternate based on the rules outlined in the alternates section. I've simply left this list here so teams will know at least a few of the players that might be available as alternates.
For any of you that would like to use it, we have a public ventrilo (voice chat) server that you are welcome to use for the tournament. Even if you don't have a microphone, if only 1 person on your team does, it can be very useful to use voice chat (at least 11 of the registered teams will be using voice chat. Why not you too?
Here's all of the info you need to get started:
Here is where you can download the client (its free): http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php
Here are instructions on how to use ventrilo to connect to a server: http://www.ventrilo.com/setup.php
And here's the needed server info:
Server Name: Lagwar's Ventrilo ServerHostname: oxygen.typefrag.com Port: 50216
I have created some password protected channels for those of you that would like to use the server. Scroll down until you see channel Oh My Demigod. You will then see tournament channel 1/2/3. The password for these channels are demigod. Let me know if you have any questions.
well wouldn't the winer of tge tourney automatically be winner of round robin
The winner of the round robin portion of the tourney is the team with the most wins after we all play each other 3 games a piece. That series of games is the round robin and there will be exactly 1 team that wins (if there is a tie, there will be a best 2 out of 3 games tie breaker). Then, the top 4 teams will play it out elimination style (also best 2 out of 3). So, its quite possible that the winner of the round robin tournament could also finish in the overall tourney in the #1 spot, but this way we reward the team that wins the round robin whether or not they win the playoffs.
I'd say no on 2nd idea. Shipping to you ain't free, then you have to ship some bulk amount of items out afterwards. Neat idea, but hardly cost effective when all is said and done
I say we go with a solid number of $30 as the prize. That way, we don't have to adjust the percentages any - we just start with the total pot, subtract $30, then distribute based on the percentages. I think that's the easiest way. Granted, $30 isn't alot, but certainly better than nothing and gives folks a chance to win something if they don't make it a money spot. Anyone opposed to just going that route?
jona you're so behind we already had an extensive discussion about that in this thread. Here in short, it is most likely but not necessarily true that the winner of the tourney is automatically the winner of the round robin. This is why we kept the first prize relatively low, in case this happens.
Well shipping isn't free, that's for sure, but with the post office offering flat rate boxes it's hardly expensive at all.
well wouldn't the winer of tge tourney automatically be winner of round robin. To what hedgie has said oak and erebus are slithy overpriced when considering how good ub or rook are with the two cheaper support generals . But I do not really see a way to price them diff because at 2 pts they would be overpowered. The occ agrument is has some validity but making him worth worth just because of two combos and changing the whole scale really wouldn't benefit the tourney. Unless you can fix oak and erebus issue at the same time.
Tweaking the demigod rules:
----
I think a flat value for participation is best. It doesn't have to be large. If it's individual I say $20 is probably good. If it's team-based then $50 or something.
---
Jona:
I agree that the team who wins the round robin will have an extremely good shot to win either 1st or 2nd place in the elimination. It would considered an upset for the 4th seeded team to beat them, I think. This is one of the reasons why I was saying keeping the 1st place + round robin sum at less than or equal to 60%
Lol Erebus Sedna and pure Ice TB is not a legit team incase anyone was wondering. All we wanted to do was get to high enough level where we could chain 11 seconds of stuns/silence together to kill someone. But UB's so silly with Sedna healing him that we never got the chance. We probably should've settled for 10 seconds of stun with a UB of our own.
Always time to give that ub/tb/sed a go before the tourney starts.
I say we go with just an individual drawing, but the team drawing might motivate people a little more and increase their odds of winning. We will keep more money in the pot if you just payout 1 person. I think $20 might be ok for an individual, but $30 sounds better to me. If we are doing a team based payout, the $50 just seems like way too little ($16.66 per person). So, I'd say 1 person who isn't in the money who plays all of their games gets $30.
Proposition: Add Hedgie to the decision making panel so you have an odd number of votes and then the panel settles the issue of what Demigod combinations are allowed.
Sometimes democracy is a beautiful thing... but not in this instance. Most of us have too many prejudices and don't know enough about high skill level matchups to cast an informed vote.
Maybe the five of you start a separate thread to figure this all out?
Hedgie, Shane & Pacov are the panel, with Lord Orion as an alternate (for when one of them aren't available or when there is a conflict of interest). Nom graciously stepped aside for Hedgie since Hedgie declined to play in the tournament. This, of course, made hedgie the perfect judge since he could be completely objective in the decision making. As you recall, hedgie was also a great person to discuss strategy with since he wasn't playing.
heh - but now that hedgie is in the tournament...
Quoting McShane again as this is his vote - to keep with the rules we initially established. He's personally seen what one of the strongest dg combos can do and successfully countered it. I 2nd this vote. And that would leave hedgie to vote, but we already have a majority. I think its best we stick with the original dg selection guidelines and not make additional exceptions that further complicate our tournament. Plus, changing dg selection at this point or a few days from now gives teams less time to work on the officially allowable combos. So, we stick with the original dg selection.
nom wins again
OMG I hate this website on my phone, goes to the top of the page whenever i start typing so I can't see whatever I type and always does an error message when i hit reply and only sometimes posts! Makes me repeat posts and words >.<.
Anyway I agree with sticking with the current DG scale, after the tournament it can be improved on because it is still far from perfect. There is a counter to any combo, even if it means playing that counter with no mistakes, they still exist.
Oh yea I forgot I'm on the panel, I almost threw away all my power to Thunder last week. Anyway yea, let's just stick with what we got, no reason to drag it on. Are we putting some official rule in place about minion oaks who go straight for the mid towers then citadel or just going to handle it on a case by case basis if someone complains about it happening?
no attacking the citadel with a single spirit the whole game my vote!
It's 3v3 so I don't see the minion Oak start being "quite" as effective (in terms of his ability to destroy all the towers while maintaining flag control, unlike in a 2v2 where it is very simple to) and with a possible large amount of teams running Sedna then any and all Oak players might be likely to go minion.
Since it's a best-out-of-3 game anyway it's a trick that will probably "only" work once and even then...
If it does become a really pressing deal we can talk about it but I dunno, I don't think that it needs to be something that's handled with a specific ban.
I had enough experience with this minion oak. In a very high lvl game it should be counterable, but only if there is a beast. in the lower skilled games, it just destroys the game play if someone goes straight for the citadel after killing all the mid towers. I don't want that for the mid to high skilled players.
I'm with Zenny, I vote ban.
I think maybe you expert players might be forgetting about the tier 2 teams out there that are in this to have fun playing against other teams who are on the same level. Minion Oak Citadel Rapeage is much easier to do than it is to counter. It is not fun to play against. It is not even fun to play with a cheesy Oak doing it on your team, win or lose.
Saying it should be in this tourney is like saying there should be ball grabbing in Mixed Martial Arts.
"Grabbing another fighters nuts should be part of the strategy!"
No it shouldn't. It is lame. I don't want to watch a fight with two fighters trying to grab each others testicles. I don't want to be in a fight with someone trying to grab mine. And I feel the exact same way about Minion Oak citadel rapeage. I don't care if there are counters to it, it is still gay and not in a good give you decorating tips sort of way.
agreed. It's gay. It's possible to counter.. but it's just absolutely zero fun.. approaching negative fun. Nice analogy btw lol. I would vote ban on that specific playstyle. I have no problems with how some people play oak with minions.. soccer does a minion + pen build and actually attacks.. I've used minions instead of shield until 11 for more dmg.. but just going straight for the citadel is just.. gay.
Since saying Oak cannot attack the citadel with spirits at all during the game isn't reasonable, do we just want to say Oak's may not use the ring of divine might or horn of battle? Or just say if anyone runs into a minion Oak who they think is being a slimeball, submit your complaint along with the replay for review, and the panel will decide whether or not disqualify the offending team? I'm not going to single the person out, but of all the registered teams I only see one name who I specifically remember being a poor sport with Oak, so I don't think it will be too much of an issue.
I think a submit-and-review is fine. If it's obvious from the get-go that railing on the citadel is your number 1 priority (that is, RoDM, full Morale, Gloves of Fell Derkur (or w/e), Gloves of Brutatlity, Siege Demolishers) then it should be pretty damn obvious.
If you're running that build, but it's against a Rook (and it's clear you're doing it to counter the Rook, not just citadel rape), then I think that the review panel can cover that fine.
Similarily, if you're running a minion heavy hybrid (RoDM, Morale, Pentitence, actually fighting occasionally), then I don't see the issue.
Banning Ring of Diving Might, Pendent of Grace, Horn of Battle (the other two as a lesser threat) I don't think is the proper way to do it. But submitting games won only by citadel cheese can be totally doable.
as always
On tweaking the selection rules, should Sed-Occ-UB stay allowed ? (or any other currently allowed DG combo) Yes, imho there's nothing uncounterable or over-the-top strong with the current rules.
Now, should Ereb-Oak-TB be allowed? Hell, maybe (and i'd love to be able to play that with my team). I mean, comparing it to the currently proposed as "best" combos out there it's nothing that much better than, let's say Rook/UB-Sedna-Occ/Queen. And, maybe we would see more of these 3 DGs in the tourney.
BUT, as the vermin rightly pointed, if we alllow this particular combo, why should we then not allow tb to be paired with any combination of 2 other 3 points Demigods? So, unless we drop TB to 1 point (and we all know TB is far above Reg and DA so i wouldn't do that), i don't see a reasonable way to tweak our current DG rules.
Ye. maybe we're going to see a lot of Rook/UB - Sedna - Occ/Queen, and few of Ere - Oak - Reg/DA, but it is what it is.
