Background
In April 2010, we started our first community demigod tournament. The tournament was 2v2 and certain demigod selections were restricted. The tourney carried a crash prize donated by people in the community and was won by the two man team of zen_god and King_of_thorns. For more details on that tourney, read up here: (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/380837).

Prize
There will be a cash prize > $600. Jongalt will be handling the collection of the money for this tournament. We are discussing the prize money in this linked thread: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/398009. We appreciate any contributions to the prize. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PAY TO PLAY IN THIS TOURNEY.
Here is how we will be splitting the winnings from the pot:
Demigod Selection
Each 3 man team must use the following formula to make their Demigod character selections based on a 7 point maximum. Be aware that no duplicate demigods are permitted on the same team. This means you cannot choose random.
Tournament Time Zone
The official time zone of the tournament is set for EST US time. Players that are outside of that timezone are certainly welcome to play. However, if there are significant scheduling difficulties due to players unable meet at the same time, the team furthest outside of the EST zone will most likely be disqualified or forfeit that match. This rule does not excuse folks in the EST zone from any responsibility. All parties in this tournament should endeavor to schedule their matches with other teams and try to be as flexible as possible.
Decision Making Panel
This tournament will be governed by a decision making panel consisting of pacov, McShane, hedgie with Jongalt as an alternate. The panel's purpose is as follows:
The panel's decision on all matters will be the final word for this tournament. And last, the members of the decision making panel will not make any decisions on the games they are playing in. We didn't have a panel in place for the first tournament and that was a mistake.
How will we handle crashes
If there is a game crash, the players involved in that match should see if they can come to a consensus on the probable outcome of the match. If there is no clear winner, the 2 teams should replay the match using the exact same demigods and sides (light/dark). If there was a clear winner at that point in the game, then that team should be awarded the win. If the 2 teams disagree on the outcome, then the decision making panel will review the replay of the match and render a decision. Be aware that the decision making panel must agree that a specific team was going to win or the results will be thrown out and the match redone. Please be thoughtful if you want the panel to review a match.
How we will handle invalid game states
The lastgamereplay file is still created in the event of an invalid game state, so it is still possible to review the results of a match. In the event of an invalid game state, players should attempt to resolve the issue exactly the same way as game crashes. If you believe foul play occurred, submit the replay along with any screen shots, etc, as evidence and the decision making panel will review. If there is a CLEAR consensus that a team is willingly triggering invalid game states, that team will be disqualified after a thorough review of the facts and will no longer be able to participate in the tournament. If your game does crash, it might be advisable to take a screen shot of the crash as proof. Be aware that we know invalid game states can occur without any sort of foul play, so please be mindful when submitting requests for review.

Registered Alternates:
Please be aware that other players are elligible to be an alternate based on the rules outlined in the alternates section. I've simply left this list here so teams will know at least a few of the players that might be available as alternates.
For any of you that would like to use it, we have a public ventrilo (voice chat) server that you are welcome to use for the tournament. Even if you don't have a microphone, if only 1 person on your team does, it can be very useful to use voice chat (at least 11 of the registered teams will be using voice chat. Why not you too?
Here's all of the info you need to get started:
Here is where you can download the client (its free): http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php

Gentlemen,
First off, i thought we voted to do a full round robin tournament instead of a round robin to a bracket system. With that in mind my suggestion is to have the playoffs as round robin as well.
Playoff Suggestion 1
Each team of the top 4 plays each other for an additional 3 games. A tie would result in a tie breaker.
Playoff Suggestion 2
If the above isn't acceptable then basically hedgies suggestion, which is any standard tournament: (each game consisting of 3 matches)
Game 1: Team 1 versus Team 4
Game 2: Team 2 versus Team 3
Game 3: Loser of game 1 versus Loser of Game 2
Game 4: Winner of Game 1 versus Winner of Game 2
Pot SplitThere should absolutely be a percentage of the pot to go to the 3rd place team to make coming in 3rd place worthy of fighting for.
The anticipated pot is currently $700 so I will use this as a basis for my suggested break downs:
Pot Split 1
$90 goes to the team that wins the round robin
50% of the balance goes to the winner of the playoffs ($305 for the team, $101.66 ea.)
30% of the balance goes to the 2nd place winner of the playoffs ($183 for the team, $61 ea)
20% of the balance goes to the 3rd place winner of the playoffs ($122 for the team, $40.66 ea.)
Pot Split 2
10% goes to the team that wins the round robin ($70)
50% of the balance goes to the winner of the playoffs ($315 for the team, $105 ea.)
25% of the balance goes to the 2nd place winner of the playoffs ($157.5 for the team, $52.5 ea)
15% of the balance goes to the 3rd place winner of the playoffs ($94.5 for the team, $31.50 ea.)
Pot Split 3
55% of the balance goes to the winner of the playoffs ($335.5 for the team, $111.83 ea.)
15% of the balance goes to the 3rd place winner of the playoffs ($91.5 for the team, $30.50 ea.)
Pot Split 4
40% of the balance goes to the 2nd place winner of the playoffs ($252 for the team, $84 ea)
Does anyone else have any other suggestions? Keep in mind that the winner of the initial round robin will definitely be one of the 4 winners of the playoffs.
Please cast your vote or provide a suggestion in regards to the playoff type so we can get a feel for what people want. If you have pledged to donate please cast your vote for the pot split or provide a suggestion (anyone should feel free to provide suggestions for the pot split)
Currently my votes are
I vote for elimination in the best of 4, so we don't have that many games and the team being the best wins and not the team with the most points wins. And I think by then it will be clear who the 2 top teams will be, that round robin style in the best of 4 would be redundant.
As for the prize I think 3rd place doesn't need a price with currently 10 teams and a relatively low price that is split among so many players.
vote concerning best of 4.: KO system best of 3 or 5 games
vote concerning prize: 1st 2nd place and for the team with the most points. no money for third.
I agree no money for 3rd.
Great - I'm adding your team now.
note - I updated the OP. In working with Stardock, we're going to adopt some specific dates to coincide with their promotion. Registration will stay open until 10/15/2010 11:59PM EST. The tournament will officially start on 10/16/2010. So, the bad news is we have to wait a little longer to start, but the good news is we have more times to bottom out things as needed.
Pot Split 5
5% goes to the team that wins the round robin
5% goes to the winner of the playoffs
5% goes to the 2nd place winner of the playoffs
85% goes to my team
honestly I don't think there is bad news.
I don't either, we're getting more and more teams/players.
let's keep the pot split discussion going.
The main thing I'm still focused on is that I believe the round robin champs should get a flat %, and I think 20% is a fair number. If we have $700 total, then $140 would be split 3 ways - $46 or so a person. And even that number seems lousy.
While I am not a gambler i am willing to wager @ 5 to 1 odds on this prediction:
The team that wins the round robin will be in one of the money winning slot of the playoffs.
So $46 plus (first, second, third) place winnings has a compound effect as opposed to just a standalone number.
also, if the top 3 places win money then that only leaves 1 team out of the top 4 that doesnt win money from the playoffs.
I can't stress enough how important that I think a 3rd place playoff winner should earn some cash. This will make game 3 of the playoffs very exciting and worth it. If there isn't a 3rd place then why bother having 4 teams duke it out at the end? why not just take the top 2 or 3? There are a lot of great players that are already teamed, and great players who aren't on a team. My next comment isn't a slight against those of us who aren't favored. So I will go on and dare to say, that there are 2 teams that are currently formed that are heavily favored for places 1 & 2 and a very strong contender for 3rd place: zen/mith/kira (who are very strong players). I think a lot of the teams will most likely be fighting for the 3rd place spot.
Certainly upsets can happen, but the purpose of the round robin and best of (3 or 5) games for the playoffs minimizes the impact of those upsets.
j
well, we have 10 teams in the tournament so far I don't think the one placing 3rd need to win money. My major reasons are:
1. I rather win nothing than lousy 46$ which i will be contributing 10 of my own lol. I rather grant the first two winnings teams a bigger price pool for all their hard efforts.
2. There is a very low amount of teams, I could understand maybe if there were 32 or 64 teams to give the 3rd place price money.
3rd. the prize pool is relatively low, in which the effort of getting the big prize is not as high.
if the total prize pool would reach close to 2000 US dollars I would change my mind and give the third place a %.
2nd. I think that 3rd place having a % of the cut, even if it is "only" 10%, is cruicial. Otherwise there is no point having a "little final", nor is there a point in even having the little end-bracket. You should just give it out to the winners of the round robin. Another reasons are there may be teams and players out there that might think that getting 1st or 2nd is out of the question, but third is possible. The incentive for money is a big deal. We have a lot of cash to play with it, here, don't throw it all onto 2 guys, that's no fun!
Another point, is I am not fond of having 1st place geta % cut that is in excess of 50%, if that does not include the round robin. The reason is because it is safe to assume that the team who wins the round robin part has a good chance to win the entire tourney. If you remove the 3rd place scoring, and give 2nd place, say 30% of the cuts, that means that 1st place will get 70% of the cut. That's a lot of cash, and a good amount of the teams (say, half?) probably no they will have no chance in seeing it.
Round Robin Winner - 20%
First Place - 40% - If RR winner wins this --> 60%
Second Place - 30% - If RR winner wins this --> 50%
Third Place - 10% - If RR winner wins this --> 30%
Is another way to divide it up. Round Robin has a pretty strong incentive (at least $40 per player). In fact, in some ways it makes Round Robin stronger. If you were second-seeded in the RR, but you manage to win the final bracket, then you would actually earn less than the team who won the RR (40% versus 50%). You can debate whether this is a good thing, or a bad thing, but it certainly puts a heavy emphasis on the RR and repeatably doing well day-by-day rather than in a single-elimination tourney.
playoff suggestion 2
as for the pot i don't mind
Notice we're at 10 teams, and there are several good old-time players running around looking for teams.
I'd anticipate at least 12 teams for the tourney. 25% of the teams making money isn't bad, and as Jon said, I'd bet 5:1 that the winner of the RR component will be 1st or 2nd in the tourney part.
How much will you bet? Are you willing to add it to the pool?
5:1 means that I make money if I'm right. And I won't and 10000 times 0 is still 0 (:
40% for first place is ridiculous now because there is no guarantee that first will win the 20% for round robin points. I could get talked into something like that, but please stop cutting down the first place.
50% first, 25% 2nd, 15% 3rd and 10 % for round robin. you still have the 60% in case the first place wins both.
Since he is the oldest and wisest of OGT (Old Guys Team) I fully support Jongalts opinion on all prize related issues.
I apologize if the following issue has already been discussed, but I couldn't find it in the OP. If a team manages to play a few games but for whatever reason cannot continue in the tourney, I'm assuming that whomever beat them does not receive any points for it? There might be quite a few people who will have trouble scheduling games and some folks might get frustrated with the heavy competition and disband.
This may seem obvious, but in my experience when it comes to anything involving any amount of money, its good to have everything covered beforehand.
Haha i might be the oldest, but wisest is certainly in question
I agree Thunder, Orcun raised that issue up a day or two ago, and that was a solution i proposed shortly thereafter. I couldn't think of another solution that would be fair.
Zen, does that mean you are voting for Pot Split 2 in the above post?
I vote for playoff suggestion 2 and i really don't mind at all about how the pot is split.
great minds think alike orcun
I vote option 1, playoffs betweeen first 4 teams, 1v4 and 2v3, then final match and match for the 3rd place.
Also, there HAS to be some kind of prize for the 3rd place winner team, even if it's only a 5% of the total pot or something. I don't mind how the pot is split either, 50-30-20% sounds good though.
When a team has clearly abandoned the tourney (and this will sadly happen for sure) due to whatever reason, i agree the best solution will be to just forfeit any points won by any team against the teams that abandon the tourney.
So yeah, i as well pretty much support what wise old man Jong says
yes
