The tournament began on 10/16/2010. Please be aware that this tournament will not begin and end on 10/16/2010. It will actually take several weeks to complete.
Background
In April 2010, we started our first community demigod tournament. The tournament was 2v2 and certain demigod selections were restricted. The tourney carried a crash prize donated by people in the community and was won by the two man team of zen_god and King_of_thorns. For more details on that tourney, read up here: (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/380837).

Alternates
Prize
There will be a cash prize > $600. Jongalt will be handling the collection of the money for this tournament. We are discussing the prize money in this linked thread: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/398009. We appreciate any contributions to the prize. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PAY TO PLAY IN THIS TOURNEY.
Here is how we will be splitting the winnings from the pot:
Demigod Selection
Each 3 man team must use the following formula to make their Demigod character selections based on a 7 point maximum. Be aware that no duplicate demigods are permitted on the same team. This means you cannot choose random.
Tournament Time Zone
The official time zone of the tournament is set for EST US time. Players that are outside of that timezone are certainly welcome to play. However, if there are significant scheduling difficulties due to players unable meet at the same time, the team furthest outside of the EST zone will most likely be disqualified or forfeit that match. This rule does not excuse folks in the EST zone from any responsibility. All parties in this tournament should endeavor to schedule their matches with other teams and try to be as flexible as possible.
Decision Making Panel
This tournament will be governed by a decision making panel consisting of pacov, McShane, hedgie with Jongalt as an alternate. The panel's purpose is as follows:
The panel's decision on all matters will be the final word for this tournament. And last, the members of the decision making panel will not make any decisions on the games they are playing in. We didn't have a panel in place for the first tournament and that was a mistake.
How will we handle crashes
If there is a game crash, the players involved in that match should see if they can come to a consensus on the probable outcome of the match. If there is no clear winner, the 2 teams should replay the match using the exact same demigods and sides (light/dark). If there was a clear winner at that point in the game, then that team should be awarded the win. If the 2 teams disagree on the outcome, then the decision making panel will review the replay of the match and render a decision. Be aware that the decision making panel must agree that a specific team was going to win or the results will be thrown out and the match redone. Please be thoughtful if you want the panel to review a match.
How we will handle invalid game states
The lastgamereplay file is still created in the event of an invalid game state, so it is still possible to review the results of a match. In the event of an invalid game state, players should attempt to resolve the issue exactly the same way as game crashes. If you believe foul play occurred, submit the replay along with any screen shots, etc, as evidence and the decision making panel will review. If there is a CLEAR consensus that a team is willingly triggering invalid game states, that team will be disqualified after a thorough review of the facts and will no longer be able to participate in the tournament. If your game does crash, it might be advisable to take a screen shot of the crash as proof. Be aware that we know invalid game states can occur without any sort of foul play, so please be mindful when submitting requests for review.

Registered Alternates:
Please be aware that other players are elligible to be an alternate based on the rules outlined in the alternates section. I've simply left this list here so teams will know at least a few of the players that might be available as alternates.
For any of you that would like to use it, we have a public ventrilo (voice chat) server that you are welcome to use for the tournament. Even if you don't have a microphone, if only 1 person on your team does, it can be very useful to use voice chat (at least 11 of the registered teams will be using voice chat. Why not you too?
Here's all of the info you need to get started:
Here is where you can download the client (its free): http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php
Here are instructions on how to use ventrilo to connect to a server: http://www.ventrilo.com/setup.php
And here's the needed server info:
Server Name: Lagwar's Ventrilo ServerHostname: oxygen.typefrag.com Port: 50216
I have created some password protected channels for those of you that would like to use the server. Scroll down until you see channel Oh My Demigod. You will then see tournament channel 1/2/3. The password for these channels are demigod. Let me know if you have any questions.
My next vote
3) End the tourney PERIOD once the last game is played. In the event of a tie we have a playoff based on tourney rules.
There is no need to allow the team with the most wins at the end of the round robin to come in 4th place.
Also, this should not be a "majority rules" vote. eg: Are 6 people voting against option 1 as of now? eg: If the winning option is eliminated as a choice, what would you vote for? eeg: If Option 1 wins, what would the split option 2 and 3 people rather have if they could pool their votes together to overthrow the winning option...
In regards to your first post, yes. One team will have to pick first for the first game, second for the second game and the outcomes will determine who picks first for the 3rd game.
in regards to your second post, i actually agree with that and am debating my current vote.
I feel that crowning a winner after the round robin is a little anticlimactic. What if Team A has the most points but Team B whooped them all 3 of the games they played together. Who has bragging rights? Sure Team A is crowned champ but Team B is still going to say they are the best. I do think awarding a percentage of pot prize to the team with most points is a good option but there still should be some sort of Final Match to declare absolute winner.
My vote goes for #1 - I just like the feel of a bracketed tourney.
1) have the top 4 teams have a showdown at the end? It would be team a vs team b. Then team c vs team d. And then a final game against the winners.
Next #2
Then #3
hey guys. i would like to participate in the tourny i have no team so hit me up
Yes - see the OP. I've added the rules from our previous tourney. I thought I had both parts of this in there already, but did not - added now. Pasted here for your viewing pleasure though.
I'm updating the title of this thread as its going to be linked to by SD in the near future. More details on that as soon as some things are finalized, but some good things are brewing at SD.
Added OmicronLyrae to the op. WB yet again!
Ok. I'll give you that. After tonight, we will remove the option with the least votes. UNLESS THOSE VOTES WON'T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE - if that happens, then voting will simply be closed. I doubt I can say too much at this point, but we really need to finalize these rules asap for fairly important reasons. And last, another change, but an important one. We need to extend registration for this tournament. I originally had 10/3 as the deadline to register. We're bumping that back 1 week to 10/10. The op has been updated.
Just going to spam this list from time to time. Hope to wrap this up today if possible.
Should we:
2) Have a final match between the top 2 teams

Undecided: pacov -it's my op . Not sure what I want, but you guys have to vote.
Edit - and don't forget to check out the tourney prize thread here: http://forums.impulsedriven.com/398009/#2791221. We could use some more contributions, so if you are planning on donating to the tourney prize, please head over there and leave a comment. Thanks!

and don't forgot my vote a 2nd time
heh - i promise. added.
Vote for 1.
Well, my slow voting friends... let me recap quickly. Here is the wall of text I've been spamming.
I wanted to end voting at midnight tonight, but someone brought up us dropping the vote with the lowest value instead. I agreed to that, but added the caveat that if dropping that vote made no difference, then we would lock in a decision. As it stands right now, vote 1has 8, vote 2 has 2, vote 3 has 4. So, we'd drop vote 2. Even if the folks that chose vote 2 would have picked 3, it would end 8 to 6. THEREFORE - vote 1 is how its going down and that is that.
The tournament will work as follows. All teams will play each other until every team has played 3 games a piece. When that is complete, the top 4 teams will have a tournament amongst them (team a v b, then c v d. Then winner v winner). If there is a tie between any of the teams before we start the semi-finals and the finals, those teams will battle it out using standard tournament rules until we have exactly 4 teams ready to complete.
So, that IS set in stone. Now, let me provide some exciting news...
STARDOCK IS BACKING THIS TOURNAMENT. For those that don't know, SD is the publisher of Demigod. Gas Powered Games made Demigod and handles the coding/bugfixes/etc. What does this mean to you? Well, for one, the prize money for this tournament is about to go up. We still want the community to contribute to the pot (see the op for where you can do that), but suffice to say, the total amount that you can win in this tournament will be over $600. And to be clear, that is a pretty accurate number.
To share a few details, Brad Wardell (frogboy here on the dg forums) jumped into one of our threads about the tournament and said SD would be willing to back us some. I've had some offline conversations with Brad and his marketing dept and they are willing to provide some sponsorship towards the prize and are going to coincide this with a sale of Demigod. As I understand things, Demigod will be going on sale for about a 2 week period at a SUBSTANTIAL discount (read: less than $6). In addition, they will be sending out some emails about OUR tournament, publicizing it and announcing the sale. So, we could see an influx of people wanting to play. I'll provide more details as follows, but the email should be going sometime tomorrow.
Onto things we need to bottom out, I'd like to talk about how we will distribute the winnings. So, we know we'll have a bit more than $600. And we know that the format be that a round robin tournament finishes and then we have semi-finals and finals. I think we should give a flat winning to the team that had the most points in the round robin tournament. That is a pretty decent accomplishment imo. And then, we need to decide how we should pay the winners of the semi-finals and finals. We need to think in percentages. Do we pay X % to the winner of the round robin, then pay X % to the final champs + the 2nd place winners? At any rate, I'd like to hear some ideas and get some feedback.
Regarding the 4-game "winner ladder" you need to do it like this:
1v4
2v3
Let's make the assumption where if the two numbers are adjacent, it's 60-40 (in favor of the larger match). If the two numbers are not adjacent, the larger number has a 75% chance of winning. (That is, if the 4th "seeded" team in the round robin would be the underdog when going against the 1st "seeded" team and the 1st team would be favored).
The reason is because this creates the most interesting matchups.
1v4 ... okay. 1 is going to win.
2v3 <- interesting match
1vWinner of(2|3) <- probably an interesting match, and will most likely be 1v2
4vLoser of(2|3) <- probably an interesting match and will most likely be 3v4
Doing 1v2 and 3v4 makes the finals very boring (1 stomps 3). (this is what it sounds like you're saying, pacov when you say avb and cvd)
Doing 1v3 and 2v4 makes the semifinals very boring and the finals probably the same as my setup (:
----
If the total is over 600, I suggest the following breakdown:
$60 (3x $20) for getting the highest points in the roundrobin (regardless of your final place).
Of what is leftover...
50% - 1st place
30% - 2nd place
20% - 3rd place
I like hedgies approach, hower i would keep it by 70% 1st place 30 % 2nd place and the $60 (3x $20) for getting the highest points in the roundrobin (regardless of your final place)
Well - good thoughts. But also consider that if we are talking about only a small margin of points (which is possible), then the teams might actually be somewhat even. But if you are considering a potential large gap in skill between the top 4 slots, then your system ensures that game 1 is a stomp, game 2 is some what interesting and then the final will be very interesting. That's probably better than rank 1 v rank 2 then rank 3 v rank 4, but I don't know... maybe rank 1 v 3 and ranks 2 v 4 would be the most interesting combo.
With regards to your payout %, I think the winner of the round robin should get more of a payout than 10%. I mean, it is the cumulative results of > 27 games. I'd even go as high as 30% to be honest. I agree that 4th place shouldn't get a payout.
I think I'm leaning towards 30% for winner of round robin ($60 per person). Then, I'd give the winning team 50% and the runner up 20%. I really think its lame to give next to nothing to the team that pulled off the most wins in the biggest part of our tourney.
I aggree with
Well, unless we make the sub-tourney have different demigod selections, the winner of the round robin probably will be the winner of the tourney (: If you make, say, the round robin be worth 30%, then 1st place be 50%, then if you totally dominate everyone you get 80% (a good $400-500). I guess that's not "bad", but I'd still like to see the money divided up more (as huge payouts are going to make this tourney far, far more serious).
Speaking of which, could you update the OP to formally add me to the judge panel and remove Nom. Thanks. (also you should indicate that Lord-Orion is a sub).
The $60 is just a way to make an incentive to perform well and not intentionally try to place third to upset #2 to then win the tourney
And I do think that there will be at least a decent point gap between 1 and 4. I'd rather ensure 1 "stomp" (1v4) and 2-3 (2v3 + finals) interesting games (I'd still like to see a "loser's cup" for third place, which could be a third interesting game). Rather than 2 exciting games in the semifinals with a stomp for the finals (in all but the closest seeds, in that all four teams are very close together in skill).
The problem with 1v3 and 2v4 is that it makes it into 2 stomps for the semifinals and the mostly likely/expected outcome for the finals... which is exactly what I'm proposing. If 3 is good enough to upset 1, or 4 is good enough to upset 2, in my system 3 would upset 2 which would then "upset" 1, whereas 4 might not be good enough to upset 2
My system is the best and there is no other option
HI ppl!! i would like to participate in the tournament even tho i am NOT tier 1 player i believe that the more players - teams we have the more interesting the tournament will be so ..... plz let me in i ll try to find a team ASAP
You say, on one hand no money is needed for a competitive tournament, but are then concerned on the other hand, that some won't get anything even though they won a lot of games.
Anyways this should not be the case as I stated before
i totally agree with:
It has to be an advantage to win the roundrobin (in this case to get the "worst" oppenents), so the prize money for the highest score can be quite short (20-30 per person).
I think, there should be a prize for the 3rd place anyway to get a interesting "little final" (dont know if this expression is used in other country as in germany- it means the match between the losers of the semi-finals). But maybe 10-15% of the money is enough, to have a bigger diference between 2nd and 3rd place....
so i would vote for:
90 dollar for the roundrobin-winners
55% for the total winner
30% for the 2nd place
15% for the 3rd place
Hi there johnkout7. Thanks for registering - I've added you to the list.
Okay - here's my next thought with regards to the winners of the round robin portion of the tourney. It should be a percentage instead of a flat rate. At the very least, penalizing them with a flat rate won't be good, especially as we see the total prize winnings grow. And while its certainly possible that the winner of the round robin will be the winner of the tournament, that's not necessarily the case. So, I'd still argue that we should give a semi-decent reward to the winner of the round robin. But perhaps I'll come down a little. How about a flat rate of 20% to the winner of the round robin? That still gives us 80% of the pot to allocate however we see fit to the winners of the final 4.
With regards to the how we have the final 4 battle it out, I'm fine if its team 1v4, then 2v3.
Yes, so what
