The tournament began on 10/16/2010. Please be aware that this tournament will not begin and end on 10/16/2010. It will actually take several weeks to complete.
Background
In April 2010, we started our first community demigod tournament. The tournament was 2v2 and certain demigod selections were restricted. The tourney carried a crash prize donated by people in the community and was won by the two man team of zen_god and King_of_thorns. For more details on that tourney, read up here: (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/380837).

Prize
There will be a cash prize > $600. Jongalt will be handling the collection of the money for this tournament. We are discussing the prize money in this linked thread: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/398009. We appreciate any contributions to the prize. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PAY TO PLAY IN THIS TOURNEY.
Here is how we will be splitting the winnings from the pot:
Demigod Selection
Each 3 man team must use the following formula to make their Demigod character selections based on a 7 point maximum. Be aware that no duplicate demigods are permitted on the same team. This means you cannot choose random.
Tournament Time Zone
The official time zone of the tournament is set for EST US time. Players that are outside of that timezone are certainly welcome to play. However, if there are significant scheduling difficulties due to players unable meet at the same time, the team furthest outside of the EST zone will most likely be disqualified or forfeit that match. This rule does not excuse folks in the EST zone from any responsibility. All parties in this tournament should endeavor to schedule their matches with other teams and try to be as flexible as possible.
Decision Making Panel
This tournament will be governed by a decision making panel consisting of pacov, McShane, hedgie with Jongalt as an alternate. The panel's purpose is as follows:
The panel's decision on all matters will be the final word for this tournament. And last, the members of the decision making panel will not make any decisions on the games they are playing in. We didn't have a panel in place for the first tournament and that was a mistake.
How will we handle crashes
If there is a game crash, the players involved in that match should see if they can come to a consensus on the probable outcome of the match. If there is no clear winner, the 2 teams should replay the match using the exact same demigods and sides (light/dark). If there was a clear winner at that point in the game, then that team should be awarded the win. If the 2 teams disagree on the outcome, then the decision making panel will review the replay of the match and render a decision. Be aware that the decision making panel must agree that a specific team was going to win or the results will be thrown out and the match redone. Please be thoughtful if you want the panel to review a match.
How we will handle invalid game states
The lastgamereplay file is still created in the event of an invalid game state, so it is still possible to review the results of a match. In the event of an invalid game state, players should attempt to resolve the issue exactly the same way as game crashes. If you believe foul play occurred, submit the replay along with any screen shots, etc, as evidence and the decision making panel will review. If there is a CLEAR consensus that a team is willingly triggering invalid game states, that team will be disqualified after a thorough review of the facts and will no longer be able to participate in the tournament. If your game does crash, it might be advisable to take a screen shot of the crash as proof. Be aware that we know invalid game states can occur without any sort of foul play, so please be mindful when submitting requests for review.

Registered Alternates:
Please be aware that other players are elligible to be an alternate based on the rules outlined in the alternates section. I've simply left this list here so teams will know at least a few of the players that might be available as alternates.
For any of you that would like to use it, we have a public ventrilo (voice chat) server that you are welcome to use for the tournament. Even if you don't have a microphone, if only 1 person on your team does, it can be very useful to use voice chat (at least 11 of the registered teams will be using voice chat. Why not you too?
Here's all of the info you need to get started:
Here is where you can download the client (its free): http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php
Here are instructions on how to use ventrilo to connect to a server: http://www.ventrilo.com/setup.php
And here's the needed server info:
Server Name: Lagwar's Ventrilo ServerHostname: oxygen.typefrag.com Port: 50216
I have created some password protected channels for those of you that would like to use the server. Scroll down until you see channel Oh My Demigod. You will then see tournament channel 1/2/3. The password for these channels are demigod. Let me know if you have any questions.
Next topic (and the good news is I think we are almost done with the org stuff) - how will be handle things at the end. Votes are appreciated.
Should we:
1) have the top 4 teams have a showdown at the end? It would be team a vs team b. Then team c vs team d. And then a final game against the winners.
2) Have a final match between the top 2 teams
3) End the tourney PERIOD once the last game is played. In the event of a tie we have a playoff based on tourney rules.

Undecided: pacov -it's my op . Not sure what I want, but you guys have to vote.

k finally figured out some shit.. rendering the first chunk of replay footage, hoping it works. Might be low quality.. did half-size in fraps and ended up w/ 20gb for a ~33 minute replay. If everything checks out, I'll probably go full size for next replay and try that out. Hopefully I've figured out the rendering shit.. I'll hopefully get it all posted w/ a link to the youtube when I'm done (about to go to bed, ideally will be up tomorrow.. otherwise tuesday.. so busy next several days). Would be very similar to what I would do for the tourney (this was a 3v3, with tourney dg selection rules, and 6 very good players). Once I get it posted, I would love feedback thx in advance!
p.s. jeebus.. this rendering bumped my cpu usage from an idle ~40-50% to ~80-95%. Quadcore barely hangin in there

2. Otherwise w/ round robin you don't get the feeling of an end, and the (hopefully) best match last. Although option 1 seems to drag the ending out a little long.
I would owe $20 if one of our tourney practice games counted. Died with 3 times with DA>
Lol wtf, 20 gb? Program's pretty much useless then I think.
Uncompressed JPEGs for a 1080p screencapture is 1.977 MB per frame. 60 fps == 118 MBps, and that doesn't include audio. If you assume 320 kbps and compressed JPEGs (550 KBps per frame, 30 fps) you're looking at 16.5 MBps. For a 33 minute replay that would be 31 GB. So I'm assuming that it's actually going about 20 fps or 30 fps but a lower fidelity rate.
tl;dr
That's on target for what the program does (take hundreds upon hundreds of screen captures and creates a video out of them).
i think FFA is much better for playoff! and vote for 1
Option one or two. That's what people want to see replays of with commentary.
pick one of em ya bum.
Fine, fine. I just meant there should be a final match of some kind. I suppose after a round robin, the top two teams playing best of three or five would be sufficent. So, Option 2.
IS RAWWRR voting but not playing?
i vote 2 and best of 5 with one option of free for all demigod selection if that's even an option. It would be whenever one team wants to do the free for all game. could be the first game second third or last.
Just going to spam this list from time to time. Hope to wrap this up today if possible.
Edit - and don't forget to check out the tourney prize thread here: http://forums.impulsedriven.com/398009/#2791221. We could use some more contributions, so if you are planning on donating to the tourney prize, please head over there and leave a comment. Thanks!
A little late jumping in here but I’m in and would put up $10. Hope I can get a team together this weekend.
I think I’ve run into majority of the people up there but some of the better ones I’ve never played against. From the talk in the forum there are a few teams that are heavily favored to win. I would consider myself an OK player that has some awesome days but I definitely know I’m not close to the best. I have no problem with that. I like playing with anyone. I just want to play.
I don’t know how much this would complicate things but I would propose a toilet bowl winner also to keep those in the lower half of the setup interested. I don’t know how it would really work maybe after the round robin is played the teams are ranked from 1 to however many teams then this is divided in half to get the top half players and the bottom half players. Then whatever is voted in for the finals plays out. Either the top 4 teams or top 2 teams in each half duke it out. So you would get your REAL winner and then you would also get a losers winner too. This might help stop people from just dropping out completely if they lose multiple times.
So if 20 teams:
Top half: Top 2 or 4 teams Rank 1 thru 10 play for the Pacov’s Huuuuzzaah Champion
Bottom half: Top 2 or 4 teams Rank 11 thru 20 play for Pacov’s Couldn’t Quite Cut It Champion or Pacov’s King of the Suck(or some other cool name) Champion.
I vote for number 3. If there is a tie for 3rd, 2nd, or 1st place a best of 3 set is played.
Exactly - even without a cash prize, I still enjoy demigod and this will get a lot of us playing together again. Fun stuff! With regards to heavily favored teams - sure, some teams are likely a little stronger based on experience, but its certainly possible that in all of those games, even those favored teams will screw up. After all, its not a single elimination tourney - so everyone gets to play everyone. As it stands, there are 9 teams officially registered, so thats 27 total games. And we'll likely see more teams before registration closes. Anyway, that's a lot of games to play and a lot of potential for even the best teams to take several loses. At any rate, as long as its fun, good stuff.
And you are right - unless rawrrr commits to a team, we'll keep him out of the voting over something that's probably going to be close.
Glad to hear you will play, brash. I'll add you to the Op. Still a good amount of folks out there that have registered and not formed a team. Do it to it!
Hmm... I like the idea and I think that would help people of similar skill levels perhaps have a bit more fun, but I'm not sure if we'll be able to do that this tourney. I'd think we could take the point results from this tourney and perhaps have another one using the point rankings of teams and placing them into similar skill level brackets... hmmm....
Useless, no. Your first render should most likely be in a lossless format. I prefer Video for Windows (a typical setting in AE and vegas etc.). A lot of people suggest quicktime PNG or even a compressed animation setting (medium quality) what i've found with those though are that quicktime itself suxass and offers zero hardware acceleration through the video card.
I would then recommend a good multi-theaded encoder to take it down to MP4, adobe's is great and will nail all 4 cores and 8 threads to 90%+ but it's fast. Vegas' encoder is good though as well.
Let me know if you need help, i've been dealing with video a lot..
4nana, also, if your initial render is lossless then expect large video sizes! a 1.5 minute animation for me runs just shy of 6 gigs.
hrmm i wonder if i would have time to do a highlights film.
Guys, please keep that in mind when reviewing replays, and timestamp the best plays for me. If i have time to edit a highlight film after the tourney i'd love to do it. Im currently have 1 play to edit and create menus/cover & transitions for, and another on the backburner so i dont know if i will have time to do it until december...
Vote for #1 for me.
Brasher, i love your idea, thanks for suggesting! Maybe we can try to incorporate it somehow.

OK, next question... since the DG selection can lead to some pretty obvious hard counters, are there going to be any rules for deciding DG selection so we don't play "change your DG 50 times" in the lobby of each game before we get started?
