The tournament began on 10/16/2010. Please be aware that this tournament will not begin and end on 10/16/2010. It will actually take several weeks to complete.
Background
In April 2010, we started our first community demigod tournament. The tournament was 2v2 and certain demigod selections were restricted. The tourney carried a crash prize donated by people in the community and was won by the two man team of zen_god and King_of_thorns. For more details on that tourney, read up here: (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/380837).

Prize
There will be a cash prize > $600. Jongalt will be handling the collection of the money for this tournament. We are discussing the prize money in this linked thread: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/398009. We appreciate any contributions to the prize. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PAY TO PLAY IN THIS TOURNEY.
Here is how we will be splitting the winnings from the pot:
Demigod Selection
Each 3 man team must use the following formula to make their Demigod character selections based on a 7 point maximum. Be aware that no duplicate demigods are permitted on the same team. This means you cannot choose random.
Tournament Time Zone
The official time zone of the tournament is set for EST US time. Players that are outside of that timezone are certainly welcome to play. However, if there are significant scheduling difficulties due to players unable meet at the same time, the team furthest outside of the EST zone will most likely be disqualified or forfeit that match. This rule does not excuse folks in the EST zone from any responsibility. All parties in this tournament should endeavor to schedule their matches with other teams and try to be as flexible as possible.
Decision Making Panel
This tournament will be governed by a decision making panel consisting of pacov, McShane, hedgie with Jongalt as an alternate. The panel's purpose is as follows:
The panel's decision on all matters will be the final word for this tournament. And last, the members of the decision making panel will not make any decisions on the games they are playing in. We didn't have a panel in place for the first tournament and that was a mistake.
How will we handle crashes
If there is a game crash, the players involved in that match should see if they can come to a consensus on the probable outcome of the match. If there is no clear winner, the 2 teams should replay the match using the exact same demigods and sides (light/dark). If there was a clear winner at that point in the game, then that team should be awarded the win. If the 2 teams disagree on the outcome, then the decision making panel will review the replay of the match and render a decision. Be aware that the decision making panel must agree that a specific team was going to win or the results will be thrown out and the match redone. Please be thoughtful if you want the panel to review a match.
How we will handle invalid game states
The lastgamereplay file is still created in the event of an invalid game state, so it is still possible to review the results of a match. In the event of an invalid game state, players should attempt to resolve the issue exactly the same way as game crashes. If you believe foul play occurred, submit the replay along with any screen shots, etc, as evidence and the decision making panel will review. If there is a CLEAR consensus that a team is willingly triggering invalid game states, that team will be disqualified after a thorough review of the facts and will no longer be able to participate in the tournament. If your game does crash, it might be advisable to take a screen shot of the crash as proof. Be aware that we know invalid game states can occur without any sort of foul play, so please be mindful when submitting requests for review.

Registered Alternates:
Please be aware that other players are elligible to be an alternate based on the rules outlined in the alternates section. I've simply left this list here so teams will know at least a few of the players that might be available as alternates.
For any of you that would like to use it, we have a public ventrilo (voice chat) server that you are welcome to use for the tournament. Even if you don't have a microphone, if only 1 person on your team does, it can be very useful to use voice chat (at least 11 of the registered teams will be using voice chat. Why not you too?
Here's all of the info you need to get started:
Here is where you can download the client (its free): http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php

3 games of tourney rules
Yes, I can create several channels for anyone that wants to use the vent.
I'll stick with 3 games of tourney rules. K.I.S.S.
Me too. 3 games of tourney rules.
What he said.
I think cash prizes are very crucial. They don't have to be necessarily high though. But the more money is involved the higher is the quality of a tournament! Just like poker, if you play for free, 90% of people won't care half way through the tourney. Moreover, money prizes ensures it to go through!
Things we ARE finalizing today:
High or normal towers. This was a dead issue, but several people chimed in wanting high towers, so I reopened the vote. Today is the absolute last day to vote.
Votes for high towers: Total votes: 7
Votes for normal towers: Total Votes 9
We've agreed that we won't be playing the best 2 out of 3 games in this tourney. Each match will consist of a total of 3 games. There was some discussion about having a free for all demigod selection in the last game. Here are the current votes.
votes for 3 games of tourney rules
Votes for game 3 FFA
I shouldn't have 2 votes, I changed mine to match Thunders.
Yes people care. You are far more involved in a match when you know other participants are waiting for the result, will watch the replay, maybe someone will review it, it's qualifying your team for a higher rank in the competition, there will be unexpected results, etc.
Just see how people care about their stats. It's all about showing personal skills and earning respect, not money. This is the truly exciting aspect of a competition, not the profit you can do by winning it. I can assure you for having participated to many competitions on other games and having organized one.
Players joining this tourney are almost all skilled and experienced. Usually around 30% of the participants are good players, 50% are average players, and 20% are not-so-good players. Because average players want to give it a try and see it as an occasion to surprise everyone (which is right, because it happens, and it's good for community when new players arise). Having money involved makes the thing more serious and elitist, which makes people think "it's not for me". As consequence there are less players joining and less variety.
Nonetheless, involving money has the benefits you mentioned. It just scares newcomers/average players.
(I am not criticizing the tourney, just giving a general opinion in a moderate wall of text)

2 games with tourney rules 1 game ffa
not that i think my vote will change something
i also vote for high towers
i vote:
FFA
2 with restrictions one without PALEASE
VOTE - just going to keep spamming this as people reply... let's lock it down.
Defender is voting for normal towers as well.
and FFA third game.Thx.
I'm torn... I occasionally still have nightmares of Orcun chasing me down the moment he gets level 5 and don't want that happening.
Eh, just put my vote with McShane for normal to make it even.
Although I'm not playing, I would rather watch the 3rd game as ffa.
Count me in for Normal Towers and 3 games tourney rules.
Hedgies not playing and I believe he favors all three games tourney rules so I guess you guys cancel out?
I don't understand what the big deal is... if two teams want to play ffa selection for their match whats the problem?
Pros
- Players who want variety can get a few matches in with whatever dg choices they want so they and replay watchers get some more variety.
- Players like myself who only know how to play a couple of demigods don't get stomped quite as hard by players who can play all the DGs well and can prepare for the tourney easier... I think the top players will agree that players of my caliber are going to get their asses handed to them badly enough.
Cons
- People seem to think that what other players consent to play in their own matches to decide the winner somehow affects other players who aren't in their match. I don't understand this... are you guys worried that if Team A plays Team B with FFA selection the other teams won't be able to prepare as well against them when watching replays? Would that really be such a bad thing?
Well i need two teammates
Votes for normal towers: Total Votes 12
Ok. Voting is now closed. Normal towers wins by a vote of 12 to 7. Normal tourney rules for the entire tourney wins by 8 to 6.
So, officially, the tourney will be standardized matches. All games on normal towers. 3 games matches. And normal tourney rules for all 3 matches. This vote WILL NOT BE REOPENED.
Next topic (and the good news is I think we are almost done with the org stuff) - how will be handle things at the end. Votes are appreciated.
Should we:
1) have the top 4 teams have a showdown at the end? It would be team a vs team b. Then team c vs team d. And then a final game against the winners.
2) Have a final match between the top 2 teams
3) End the tourney PERIOD once the last game is played. In the event of a tie we have a playoff based on tourney rules.
And side note - I'm calling this as an official rule - regarding any of the scenarios above, if there is a tie, there will be a playoff by standard tourney rules. I appreciate your QUICK feedback.
Oh and normal towers!
Vote 3)
