The tournament began on 10/16/2010. Please be aware that this tournament will not begin and end on 10/16/2010. It will actually take several weeks to complete.
Background
In April 2010, we started our first community demigod tournament. The tournament was 2v2 and certain demigod selections were restricted. The tourney carried a crash prize donated by people in the community and was won by the two man team of zen_god and King_of_thorns. For more details on that tourney, read up here: (http://forums.demigodthegame.com/380837).

Prize
There will be a cash prize > $600. Jongalt will be handling the collection of the money for this tournament. We are discussing the prize money in this linked thread: http://forums.demigodthegame.com/398009. We appreciate any contributions to the prize. YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO PAY TO PLAY IN THIS TOURNEY.
Here is how we will be splitting the winnings from the pot:
Demigod Selection
Each 3 man team must use the following formula to make their Demigod character selections based on a 7 point maximum. Be aware that no duplicate demigods are permitted on the same team. This means you cannot choose random.
Tournament Time Zone
The official time zone of the tournament is set for EST US time. Players that are outside of that timezone are certainly welcome to play. However, if there are significant scheduling difficulties due to players unable meet at the same time, the team furthest outside of the EST zone will most likely be disqualified or forfeit that match. This rule does not excuse folks in the EST zone from any responsibility. All parties in this tournament should endeavor to schedule their matches with other teams and try to be as flexible as possible.
Decision Making Panel
This tournament will be governed by a decision making panel consisting of pacov, McShane, hedgie with Jongalt as an alternate. The panel's purpose is as follows:
The panel's decision on all matters will be the final word for this tournament. And last, the members of the decision making panel will not make any decisions on the games they are playing in. We didn't have a panel in place for the first tournament and that was a mistake.
How will we handle crashes
If there is a game crash, the players involved in that match should see if they can come to a consensus on the probable outcome of the match. If there is no clear winner, the 2 teams should replay the match using the exact same demigods and sides (light/dark). If there was a clear winner at that point in the game, then that team should be awarded the win. If the 2 teams disagree on the outcome, then the decision making panel will review the replay of the match and render a decision. Be aware that the decision making panel must agree that a specific team was going to win or the results will be thrown out and the match redone. Please be thoughtful if you want the panel to review a match.
How we will handle invalid game states
The lastgamereplay file is still created in the event of an invalid game state, so it is still possible to review the results of a match. In the event of an invalid game state, players should attempt to resolve the issue exactly the same way as game crashes. If you believe foul play occurred, submit the replay along with any screen shots, etc, as evidence and the decision making panel will review. If there is a CLEAR consensus that a team is willingly triggering invalid game states, that team will be disqualified after a thorough review of the facts and will no longer be able to participate in the tournament. If your game does crash, it might be advisable to take a screen shot of the crash as proof. Be aware that we know invalid game states can occur without any sort of foul play, so please be mindful when submitting requests for review.

Registered Alternates:
Please be aware that other players are elligible to be an alternate based on the rules outlined in the alternates section. I've simply left this list here so teams will know at least a few of the players that might be available as alternates.
For any of you that would like to use it, we have a public ventrilo (voice chat) server that you are welcome to use for the tournament. Even if you don't have a microphone, if only 1 person on your team does, it can be very useful to use voice chat (at least 11 of the registered teams will be using voice chat. Why not you too?
Here's all of the info you need to get started:
Here is where you can download the client (its free): http://www.ventrilo.com/download.php
Here are instructions on how to use ventrilo to connect to a server: http://www.ventrilo.com/setup.php
And here's the needed server info:
Server Name: Lagwar's Ventrilo ServerHostname: oxygen.typefrag.com Port: 50216
I have created some password protected channels for those of you that would like to use the server. Scroll down until you see channel Oh My Demigod. You will then see tournament channel 1/2/3. The password for these channels are demigod. Let me know if you have any questions.
I vote for Round-Robin too, but if there are more than 10 teams it might be a bit overkill, to many matches to arrange. We could then split the teams in 2 groups of 5 or something.
About towers, i'm kinda getting used to high towers, but i'd probably prefer normal towers. Not sure yet to cast a vote.
Round Robin+ High Towers= Many, many hours of Demigod over the next few weeks= Relationship Damage for us married folks. One or the other.
Round Robin: Yes
High Towers: No
I vote for normal towers and the round robin ... the dg selection rules sound good for me too
I like the idea of playing every team in the tourney, this would give rise to big upsets and fun games.
I am all for the round robin.
Towers --> normal
NNNEEEVVAAAR HIGH TOWERRRRRRRRZZZZZZZZZZ (normal towers)
My votes:
Mine or Nom's suggestion are both fine for me.
Full round Robin( In soccer leagues if two teams end up at same point, the one that won against the other is considered the higher rank, we can use this as well here. Or if two teams end up at same point we can do a final match)( The older system used in soccer games was the average system, based on that, the team that won the points with the least losses has the higher rank in a point tie situation, this can work as well.)
And Definitely No high towers(Not only because it makes the game longer but i think it highly increases the margin of error and changes the game quite a bit. Also making the game longer changes the balance of demigods quite a bit as well. High tower games last longer, so especially late game part of the game is longer. This strengthens certain dg's such as Ub,Rook,Oak, and somewhat sedna that has good skills to use at level 15 and after. While there are certain dg's that doesn't have that useful skills at 15 and after such as Occ,Qot and reg. Side note: DA at 15 and after gets a good boost as well and that is the good part regarding balancing)
normal towers
round robin sounds fun, dunno if we get done with this tourney within this year though lol
No to high towers for the reasons mentioned by others.
As for DG selection... DA is worse then reg (from a team perspective), Occ is a decidedly great demigod when in the hands of a skilled player and Oak is an unkillable, flag re-locking timebomb counting down to level 11+ when he just explodes into a can of whupass.
My DG suggestions
1-DA.2-Reg.3-Qot, TB4-Sedna5-Le, Occ6-Rook, Oak, UB13 points
it's the exact same as this list, but better because queen oak LE are not in one team!
1 Point - DA or Reg2 Points - Oculus, QoT, Sedna, TB3 Points - Erb, Oak, Rook, UBNo duplicates allowed and you can have a maximum of 7 points per 3 man team.
lol
lmfao!
Votes for high towers
Votes for normal towers
If you already chimed in on this and I missed it, please chime in again with your vote.
Looks like we'll likely be playing normal towers then. Will wait a few more hours, then that issue is settled.
Hey! cut me some slack, i'm on my feminine week...
Ok, after hours of meditation, i vote for normal towers too. Tower killer DGs (Spit UB, Rook, minion builds,..) will kill them all the same, just take a bit more time, while weak armored demigod (DA, Reg, TB..) will struggle a lot more to bring them down fast if carelessly left alone in a lane.
Edit: If we could get the tower damage citadel upgrade fixed in UberFix, that would be actually great.
My vote is high towers although it does change the balance
OK - its set in stone. We have our official demigod restrictions (I'll update and maybe make a pretty chart ). We will be playing normal towers. And we will be doing round robin as the official format. So, everyone plays everyone the best 2 out of 3. Teams will get points based on win/loss.
I want to iron out this point system. Do we just do 1 point for a win, 0 points for a loss or what? That sounds easy enough - any issues with doing it that way? I don't care if we do 2 points for a win, 1 point for a loss.
Do we have some sort of championship system at the end? We could a) do nothing - if you have the most points, you win the tourney take the 2 teams with the highest points and have a best of 5 games series or c) take the top 4 teams and have fight it out in semifinals and finals?
And the last team orientied discussion topic, brought up by orcun and I'm in favor of: do we remove the demigod restrictions if we are playing a rubber match? For instance, team a wins, team b wins - for game 3, you can pick anyone you want. If not in the regular tournament, do you guys want this in the finals (if we have them). I'd like to wrap this one up in about 24 hours if poss, so please vote asap.
Thanks again to everyone responding quickly so we can bottom things out fast.
edit - jon - please start a new thread called something to the effect of 2nd Demigod Community Tournament Prize Money Discussion. Explain what you are planning on doing and link back to this thread - add mcshane's boast about paying $20 if he dies x times in a game and try to get the money side of things organized. Once you have that op up, reply here with a link and I'll add it to the op. Once I nail down a few more things for the tourney, I'll hand the rest of the administrative stuff off to you and you can open up a tournament results thread. I appreciate your help. Thanks! And keep in mind that so far I've only asked who would be willing to pay $10 or so to enter. We've decided that isn't a requirement, so there's no guarantee all of those folks will want to contribute. It would be nice if we have the prize money sorted out over the next week if possible so everyone knows what the total winnings will be. Do not discuss distribution of funds in your thread (1st place gets X dollars, 2nd X, and so on). That will be a topic I'll address here soon and get a vote on what people think.
Hey Sly - in case you are still checking this thread - odds are we won't live stream (but I'd really like to give it a shot - we will see), but all of the games will have viewable replays and there will be a thread that tracks the results of the games. In the last game summary thread, I pointed out good games that would be fun to watch (so keep an eye out for that). Rawrrr has offered to provide some commentary on some of the games and I'm down with helping him out, so I'd wager we will come up with a few games to host on youtube for people to review with full expert commentary. It only would take a couple of hours to get a good commentary together and host a video, so I think this will happen for a few games. HOPEFULLY - we'll pick a couple of early games just to give everyone a chance to see the type of content we'll be offering. I'm thinking about contacting stardock to see if they will file an official link to the tourney on their main website. The did this for our last tourney without us asking (which was pretty cool).
you all suxkz make the towers super high!
says the guy who hasn't even registered for the tourney... booo synn... boo.
I suggest following:
Round Robin. Everyone plays everyone else. 2 points for a win. 1 point for a loss.
2-0 => 4 points for winner. 2 points for loser.
2-1 => 5 points for winner. 3 points for loser.
After that, take the highest four teams point-wise (any ties for fourth place should just get in a match off between the ties). This should prevent any weird issues where one team goes 2-1 against every team, except one undefeated team that goes 2-0 to everyone. If there were 10 teams, the 2-1 team would "win" by points, even though it lost to the 2-0 team and that team swept everyone and so was clearly better.
Arrange them in the following bracket
1v4
2v3
Winners then play eachother for 1st/2nd place
Losers play each other for 3th place.
Since the "seed" of the round robin should make the 1v4 game be a "easy" victory for 1, the only one that is really a tossup would be 2v3. The loser of the 2v3 could possibly beat the 4th team, or vice-versa (making the 3rd place game somewhat interesting).
I think that you could retain demigod-restrictions for the first 2 games of this short series, but the third game in each series would be a free-choice. Though UB/Rook/LE/Oak games get dull when played over and over again, they can be very exciting when played by excellent players on each side (and who have played against eachother at least four games before in the tourney).

Regarding DG selections, I would say that Sedna is weaker in 3v3 than she is in 2v2. Sure, monk stacking is easier to do in 3v3, which is sorta her thing. But Counter Healing isn't very useful and Heal is less useful as well (since as you increase the number of players in an engagement, increasing damage output is more important than reducing damage input). Conversely, Queen is somewhat better in 3v3. She's more expensive than Sedna, for sure, and she has a weaker WS6-7 (when shield falls to the level 8-10 abilities everyone has, and she doesn't really have the mana to spam abilities easily and she isn't backed up by Catapults/Giants yet). She can also support a UB better early game and she supports a Rook much better.
The current system also really makes it hard to have Oak or Ereb. But it's already been decided so w/e 8D
i want in! i'm never on forums, someone email me at smith.logan.t@gmail.com << i check daily.
wouldn't this make it so ppl would purposefully go 2-1 against bad teams? "whoops we somehow lost that second game"
i would reward the point for wins/losses that way (it premiums a 2:0 more than a 2:1, because i think more points for a 2:1 can result in conscious losses of the better team)
so:
2:0 - winner gets 3 point and looser nothing
2:1 - winner gets 2 point and looser 1
also i would propose that if a third game happens then the team which had a faster win decides which team starts with chosing a dg (the one picking first choses one dg then the other team 2 dgs and then the other 2 and then the other one ... so 1'-2''-2'-1'' [' - team picking 1st, '' - team picking as 2nd)
at the end of the round robin i would vote for a kind of play-off like hedgie proposed (1v4,2v3)
my votes:
Hgh Towers & Orcun-'s selection of demigods ( in fact now is so many possible combination(orcun's, nom, pacov, zen etc) of demigods selection that i can't judge which one is best ;S)
other matter:
what about if during the match one player will disconnected? how will we judge this ?
-rematch?
-all players press concede and then play new match?
-what if one team has big advantage (locked opposite portal or got gigants etc) and then a player will disconnected? match continous or what? we count it as a win?
In what other sport do you get points for losing? Soccer?
