Any good Age of Wonders Shadow Magic guides out there?
I just started playing and I am having trouble on custom scenario games. I expand well early game but then I have trouble protecting my borders. I get several heroes also just groups of units but it is a lot to protect. Not only do you need units to protect your cities but all your resources as well. Considering that the movement points in the game is low - you can't quickly protect resources immediately. So alot of my gold mines get flipped.
This last game I am squeezed in the middle between 3 different factions all starting to move into my territory and I just don't have army to protect it all. I was getting attacked south so I went south then I get attacked east! When I see this happen its about game over. I spend so much time just running around flipping resource nodes. Kinda boring.
Also I can't seem to get any of the AI's to make peace with me or ally. Still after offering them everything I have they will not accept.
Can anyone offer an extensive guide or maybe just some basic tips?
I was playing the premade lion. I really like how you have to think during each turn because each decision can determine a win or a loss.
Interesting. I've avoided the later AoW games after the AI of the first one was a disappointment. There wasn't much fight in it. After you established a decent stack, you could just walk all over the map with it. Maybe you're just playing too defensively?
To anyone who can offer help to the original poster, can you comment on how good the AI of AoW SM is?
never noticed if the AI was particularly bad - they are not that aggressive early on. My cities don't get attacked too much just the resource areas.
I wonder if there are user made mods that tweak or improve the AI? Because if the AI is poor I just don't know because I'm new to the game - but eventually I won't be.
It's better than Dominions 3 AI... The AI isn't near as bad as it was in AoW, though you can still exploit it, strategically. That said, it does fine in tactical battles, and if you get to the point where the AI is becoming too easy, try it on a harder setting. Cheating AIs are always a bit of a challenge.
Have a look at the unofficial balance patch. While I don't recall it changing the AI at all, it vastly improves the unit balances and (last time I played multiplayer) was more or less mandatory.
Note, too, that certain custom scenarios are harder for the AI. Most notably, the "Epic" or "Building an Empire" mode, where you start with a single village in a world largely empty of neutral towns.
Also, diplomacy with the AI factors in a number of things, such as the number of allies they already have, the alignment of your races, your power, your relation to their race (eg: if you've been razing orc cities and replacing orc populations with dwarven ones, you wont have an easy time winning over the archmage leading orcs) etc etc. I've never really had an issue with it, so I'm not entirely sure what might be causing you trouble.
I almost never protect individual resource nodes. It's a very poor use of your gold and/or mana. Instead, keep a single fast unit on hand to follow the enemy raiders and flip them back. A great unit for that is the Air summon Zephyr, but there are plenty of options either from your racial units or from the recruitment locations. Just make sure you are recruiting a unit compatible with your race's alignment, or they're likely to desert and start stealing resources of their own. Then, every once in a while have one of your actual armies take those raiders out.
You also have options for defending borders. Many maps have natural choke points, such as bridges, mountains, etc, which you can take advantage of. You a pioneer unit to build towns at these locations, or use spells like raise land to wall off a mountain pass.
Most races have a fast unit, or you can summon something fast. Just use that to retake nodes and don't use your army on it. Your best bet is to form a strong stack with a hero or two and the best units you can make, and simply go find and crush an enemy. You can use any other heroes to make a squad to defend your territory against attacking AIs.
What race/magic are you taking? If you want something easier to start with, take Undead, and all six Death books. Then for skills take Anarchy, Scholar, and Survivalist (anarchist doesn't matter as Death/Undead since the dark races will like you anyway and everything else will hate you anyway, it's just a free skill). Once you can make Dread Reapers and cast Damnation, you're unstoppable.
The other easy starter team is something like Draconians with all six Air books, then you can cast Haste Domain and all your units will be able to outrun everybody else. Plus Ice Age is pretty effective at hindering the AI's ability to make money.
Oh, and build Shrines of Magic. They're AWESOME.
