I had thought that as you research tech, new core ship designs would become available to build in the ship yard. I've researched new drives, unlocked hulls, but I'm still not automatically getting new core ships.
What am I missing? Am I going to have to design new ships, like transports, myself?
I'm playing a sandbox game in Twilight of the Arnor. Thanks for any help. I've been getting into GCII and Elemental and am enjoying both.
New core designs do in fact become available as you research the required techs but you have to research *all* techs required by the design before they are available. Don't forget you might need life support and miniaturization techs as well as the obvious weapons, defense, engine and hull techs.
However in general the core ships suck and you really should just get into the habit of designing your own ships. They don't have to look pretty they just have to work and you're far better off designing your own ships that use the best of whatever techs you currently have instead of not being able to build some predefined ship just because your life support or sensors aren't up to snuff.
You can just pick a hull and use the place button if you don't care how the ship looks. It will probably end up looking lopsided but who cares? And if you do care like me then it really doesn't take all that much to make the ship look symmetrical with weapons in the front and engines in the back.
You really are limiting yourself by being dependent on the core designs because all in all they aren't really all that useful. I usually upgrade my miner to another colony ship and once both colony ships are gone I "obsolete" all the core designs I start with and never use another core design ever. I'm pretty sure that's what most folks do as well.
Thank you for the detailed answer. Others have also said they don't think much of the core ships and much prefer their own designs. I was interpreting that as "prefer making their own warships" though and thought at least core freighters would be useful and would have unlocked once trade and hyperdrive were unlocked. (per the GalCivII Wiki. https://www.galciv.wikia.com/wiki/Freighter)
Thank you again for the tips, Mumblefratz. for you.
So true, and I might argue that the "in general" is saying too much. The only core ship I ever, ever use is the constructor - I still keep it around at times as a cheap short-range constructor.
Core ships no longer unlock in TA, at last check; the autodesigner was supposed to replace that function for people who don't prefer to build their own ships, since, as stated, the core ships are inferior to custom designs.
I can't remember if it's turned on by default, though-you might have to enable it yourself, in the game options.
It's possible I'm remembering slightly wrong and there are circumstances under which core ships do unlock in TA, but as I generally play as a custom race, I don't see them.
I don't have that much experience with this game, so when I was playing a few days ago and a single pirate ship took out my entire army, I was quite dismayed. That's when I realized that the core ship designs suck and that I should make my own.
I've unlocked some more core designs. So far that would be my only dislike of GC2 is not knowing what "ships=units" I am unlocking with what tech I'm researching. I'm sure I will get a feel for it as I play more and it does make a certain sense that say sensors, hull types, and logistics might be needed in order to build certain ship types. It is flying blind at first. This is another good reason to design your own ships though.
