Looking for PC games only.
Could someone suggest a good strategy and/or civ or empire buidling game that's turn based(RTS with pause isn't ok), fairly recent, not battle reenactments, and not based in war from about 1600 to present day(future is a-ok)? Already done fantasy wars and king arthur the role playing strategy game.
And a a fairly recent, fairly immersive RPG that doesn't involve lots of puzzle solving and isn't a lot of first person shooting(fighting and fps is ok, just not the main thing of it)? Horror prefered. I really enjoyed Bloodlines, but that's from a while ago.
fps/rpg: Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Horror, and while there is some run'n'gun sections, it's not all fps shooty game (you get your first guns about 30-33% in the game- and yes, you will be happy to have them, trust me)
Strategy:..humm...Galactic Civ 2?
Dark Corners has a lot of puzzle solving and I find that stuff irritatin'. Gal Civ 2's not recent though. Ty for suggestions.
The Witcher sounds like the RPG for you. No horror but is a solid recent rpg.
" Gal Civ 2's not recent though"
It is still a damn good game, and I personally like it better then Civ4. Sounds like you are looking for graphics abit and not gameplay IMHO.
I just bought Eshalon 1 and 2 and I found those to be great games, even though they have old graphics, Gave me a great sense of notalgia.
Oblivion, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age Origins is great RPG's.
No. You assume things incorrectly. I've already played gal civ II and a lot of other games, recently means more likely i haven't played it yet. Not a fan of dragon age origins. Felt like I was playing World of Warcraft with the controls and the way over done bloody spatter was just silly in a not fun way. I'll eventually check out oblivion. Ty for reminder.
seriously get oblivion for the PC and download some mods. amazing experience really. i think i am running on close to 50 mods right now.
Seconded, get the game of the year edition. One of the best deals in gaming for $20 and no DRM besides needing the disk unless I am mistaken.
You know, I borrowed the game on the console and loved it. This is probably the excuse I need to buy it for the pc.
Actually I would recommend getting Jagged Alliance 2 off Steam. It's not necessarily an RPG - but it does have RPG elements.
Morrowind is way better then Oblivion. Oblivion is the Eldar Scroll`s game that came after Morrowind. It may be abit to old for you, I fould it to be a much more interesting RPG. The freedom aloud in Morrowind was a first for me. I`ve never played a game before that let you run free in it`s world before. Oblivion has that freedom as well, I think being designed with console`s in mind really hurt it. I fould Oblivion to be very dull and repetitive. Morrowind not at all. Morrowind allow`s alot more depth in how you level up your character as well. I think that is the big difference between the two.
If you go with Oblivion, Get some mods.
EDIT: The combat system in Oblivion is far superior.
I would suggest Risen as an RPG you should check out. It's a recent game (less than a year old) and yet very old school.
It's the sort of game that really, really creates an atmosphere. If you have a decent rig, the graphics are very nice. All dialog is voiced, and the acting is great.
It reminded me of the Ultima games in that there is a complete free roaming world, day/night cycle, and NPCs that actually keep to a schedule and don't stand in one place 24/7 as quest dispensers.
The combat is not a clickfest, either. You have to level it up and get used to it, timing your attacks and dodging, parrying, blocking, etc.
It's far more fun than Oblivion. Nothing is level-scaled. If you wander into the wrong place when you're low level, you'll get your ass handed to you right away. Better loot and upgrades do not fall, Diablo-style, from every monster and tree. Wolves do not drop plate mail. You have to work and quest for your upgrades, and you get a damn fine sense of accomplishment from it, something sorely missing from Oblivion and other level-scaled games.
I'm enjoying the hell out of it.
Just finished cryostasis which is a good first person horror/survival game... jumped a couple of times
How so - what really hooked you? Its been on my radar, but I haven't bought it yet.
If you liked Fantasy Wars (and/or the Elven Legacy series that follows it), I'd recommend Battle for Wesnoth, which has a similar gameplay model. The graphics are all 2D, so that may not be your thing, but it's tactically deeper than Fantasy Wars, and there are lots of campaigns of various length and difficulty. Best of all, it's free.
Kings Bounty Armoured Princess - pure class
Cryostasis looked like just a lot of fps. Blowing things up and shooting them to hell over and over doesn't interest me.
Westnoth was good, but already played it out. Alas.
Yeah i've heard about risen. And the combat compared to M&B. I wonder if they have a demo for it though.
Risen is a lot like the Gothic games. Well, it really is Gothic 4 in all but the name.
