Been thinking about picking up either Galactic Civ 2 or Sins of Solar Empire. What would you guys recommend? I am fairly new to the 4x genre so Galactic Civ looks a bit intimidating. Are both fairly easy to pick up and learn? I've got the basics of Elemental down already from a few hours of play so fairly competent at learning these games =P I'm not so much worried about all the minor details of how things work as long as I have the general idea down and having fun! I saw best buy has soase complete for $29.99 which is a nice price point. Just wanted to get some ideas from some of you 4x vets before I spend the money
As the name suggests, galactic civilizations is really more like civilization then MoO. You move your units one space at a time on a flat civ style square map, and battles are won and last immediately when one unit moves into another. Being in outer space the world is kind of empty, so it's not as interesting as the terrain in Civ. You mostly only care about the sectors that have solar systems and completely ignore all the empty space between them. I like the game, but I'm sure it's not for everyone and if the demo felt flat to you then the game itself probably will too (although the expansions do add a lot).
Xiara, I've got both. I recommend Sins! For a horde (sic) of reasons. First get Impulse from www.impulsedriven.com where the full Trinity Edition is now 39.95. You can download the Sins demo with Impulse too.
Sins has the more active community and is a rollicking good game! And with an active modding community too. Play it as it comes at first, but there are a lot of ways to jazz it up.
GC 2 is very good also, a lot more strategic depth lots more screens of nard to look at ... but it also requires something approaching thinking. And thinking makes my head hurt!
I did not like Sword of the Stars. More tedium interrupting what I really like to do which is get my fleets out there blowing s**t up.
Remember that the Civilization 5 demo will be out on the 21st of September!
RTS = SoaSE
TBS = GC2
My vote goes to GC2. Both are great.
