AUGUST 24th, 2010.
This is a day that the team has been waiting for for three years!
As some of you know, some retailers broke the street date and to make sure our beta testers and pre-order customers didn’t get the short end of the stick, we released an interim build of Elemental (internally called Gold Edition++).
It turns out that this was a blessing in disguise because we have gotten a tremendous amount of useful feedback from those of you who got the game before release. The results of this comes in two parts.
First, tonight we released a new interim build. This version is basically bug fixes and such based on player reports. You can see what’s new in it here. Looking at the change log gives you an idea of the complexities of making a new PC game in 2010 with a brand new engine.
But tomorrow (or later today as I write this) is the big one. The official day 0 update that the team and I have been working on since Beta 4 (the beta group can go into more detail on this but in brief: After beta 4, the game tree was split in two. One version went on to be the gold version which is what those people who have it early are playing. The other tree went on to become day 0. These two trees were merged today already and will be going up tomorrow.
So what can you expect?
Here’s a few highlights:
The day 0 version, as most of you know, is the version that was originally expected to be the first version most people would ever play. We’re definitely glad, however, that people got to play the pre-day 0 builds because we got a lot of very useful feedback and some crash reports that were not known about.
Now, a couple words on multiplayer. The servers are up but we are not going to enable multiplayer until next week. Part of this is, to be honest, team exhaustion. The early release meant a lot of people who were expecting this weekend off to rest from the grueling last few weeks had to come in. So we’re going to let them get a couple of days off later this week and open up the MP next week.
One piece of good news on MP. Originally we had planned to eliminate tactical battles from MP entirely because of balance. Some people correctly guessed the misguided (in hindsight) reason for this: We were approaching MP from a purely competitive point of view. Based on the persuasive arguments made by our players, we have decided that tactical battles will be made available in MP – as an option – at a later date as a free update.
So that’s all for now. After the day 0 update, I plan to take a day or two off too. I hear sleeping is the new “in thing” and you guys know me, I’m all about being cool and…um..what not.
We had SC2 sell for less than 10$ in some stores in Sweden. It was very localized, but two giants (elgiganten and mediamarkt) are currently trying to destroy each other, and they ended up doing a seriously messed up pricewar for SC2 when it released.

why aren't there more posts about this? still version 1.01, that would mean PRE-day 0, right? when is the release version coming?
Did you even read the post? He said they'll upload it later today, or tomorrow.
Oh, I thought 1.01 WAS the Day-0 release.
"Today" has a fair bit of time left in it in SD's timezone. Supposed to be this evening last I read.
yes, I read his post - why do you ask? Snarkiness doesnt become anyone, and this is the patch that is supposed to be out on day zero, which is today, as Brad himself posted it would be.
The question is, once I get everything installed and updated... if the day 0 thing isn't ready, do I start that campaign at that point, or just start playing a random map set up.
/pointless comment
anyway, there's a fair bit of today left
General consensus right now seems to be that you should try a random map first just to play around a bit. The campaign is getting some tutorial style improvements in the day-0 patch from what Boogiebac said.
I'm kinda happy my Limited Edition is still in transit to me. By the time I get it, alot will have been ironed out already. And it will be a beautiful and wonderful thing to playl.
THANKS GUYS..............................
I would start sandbox first. The campaign is supposed to get some love in the tutorial department with the patch, so it makes sense to wait.
There is a simple way to solve the problem with wildly random damage and attack rolls. All rolls should be based on coinflips. Instead of using 1d30 like it is currently a roll should use 15d2. Problem solved. This is basic game design, how it escaped the supposedly "strategy" devs is beyond me. Wildly random rolls isn't strategy it's luck. Incidentally this is one reason why the original Starcraft is a tournament-level game.
Asking about something that is clearly stated in the original post - that's why you get a snarky reply.
I'm just gonna give it time for the Day 0 and more patching, I discovered nothing can pull me away from UFO: Afterlight right now, been playing for a week or so and started fresh with a mod after the main game gets broken from impossible difficulty.
Perhaps not 15d2 in that case (how would you do odd numbers?) but if there were some way of making damage more normalized, fitting it to a bell curve, or anything like that I'd be for it. And the Starcraft doesn't have any randomness in attack damage at all, or is that your point?
Clearly, you can't read. Oh well, people like you everywhere I guess.
From Brad's post that he posted on the 23rd late at night for him "But tomorrow (or later today as I write this) is the big one. The official day 0 update that the team and I have been working on since Beta 4 (the beta group can go into more detail on this but in brief:"
Anyways - this will be a day 0 patch tomorrow then for me, since its close to midnight here tonight.
Long time lurker first time poster, 2 things:A ) LOVE the game, yet another amazing product from StardockB ) Just went to launch the game and it started downloading a "major game update" Day 0 patch anyone?Scratch that, apparently it was just 1.01... odd
lies!
I know, I know, I'm sorry, please don't hurt me! A big pop up opened up in game saying "major update available" talking about improved campaign etc. etc., so I thought it was out...
That's the current update, which is ahead of the version on the retail disk. You'll get another patch later.
Ha! Good one
Isnt this supposed to be out today?
They released an emergency patch to for Pre-orders yesterday as the street date had been broken so that any early player would get an updated version to play instead of the 20 day old gold version. That took time so the 0 day patch is coming out a little later than planned.
So can we expect the 0-day today?
Like in a few hours, or later tomorrow?
Soon, or at least in 1 to two hours.
At max, early tomorrow.
