An interesting article on IGN claims that, apparently, Duke Nukem Forever may not be cancelled after-all, and has been handed to Gearbox - the creators of Borderlands - to complete. After hearing of the demise of the-now-comical Duke Nukem Forever, I have to admit I was a little sad that I'd never get my hands on what has become the longest serving tradition in gaming history - waiting for the Duke. Some 14 years after development began, are we actually getting close to a release? More importantly... does anyone still care?
DNF can't ever come out any more. Not because it was cancelled or anything, but because it would kill the meme. We wouldn't be able to say "oh, that game's gone the way of Duke Nukem Forever" anymore. A new game would have to be found to replace it. DNF has become synonomous with vaporware, you can't go messing with that!
More seriously though, no, I don't really care. After all this time, I doubt it can live up to 14 years worth of expectations. If it is real, I feel like at this point it would be little more than a money grab. People will buy just because it is the game that was never going to come out, not because it is any good.
After all the work they had done on it, you'd think it would have been released.
Of course, they've done enough work to put out at least 3 games, but put out zero. This was a case screaming for a project manage or publisher with the power and desire to force the developers to say "this is good enough, polish and ship it."
Duke 3D was good.
For 1992. (Edit: This wasn't clear, this is a joke saying the FIRST duke game was dated, never mind any others).
Bit late guys.... And your going to try agian? NOW? Huh?
Absolutly don't care the slightest what happened to DNF, still don't. Do care about Diablo 3 though, that looks ubah good.
Don't eat the cake , the cake is a lie!! If it happens it will get my money unless they port it to a console system. Then I will keep my cash and regain my hope for something else!
Duke never dies.
From those leaked videos about a year back, I thought the game looked quite good.
If this game actually ships, I think I'll feel compelled to buy it day one. It's almost like being part of an alternate reality- "I was there on the day DNF launched."
Maybe it'll be released as a flash game or something. Honestly, I really don't care at this point. It's better just to make fun of it, I think they would ruin the joke if someone released it.
The worst thing about DNF is that whatever the developers did 13, 10 or even 5 years ago is already out of date by a century in the gaming technology calendar. You cannot release a game in 2010 that runs on a modified engine from what... 1997?
So basically if anyone is going to actually develop DNF, they are going to have to do it from ground up. Whatever was done about it five or more years ago isn't worth a lollipop now.
Eh...funny stuff. Either way...an on-topic joke:
3d realms has already done that a few times. That's why it's been delayed so many times.
Duke who? Who cares that is.
Every child of the 80's who thought the Duke was the most badass thing ever, every 12 and 13 year old who saw those pixelated strippers for the first time, who went around flushing toilets, tossing out catch phrase after catch phrase...etc
Well, Duke 3d was one of the best FPS games of its time.
Eww, who's your plastic surgeon?
Duke is still the original one-liner spewing badass. Serious Sam tried and was good mindless fun, but still not Duke. I'd definitely checkout whatever they come up with, but am ever leery of sequels and remakes nowadays.
I hope they release it, but, I'm not too thrilled about Gearbox pixking it up. Borderlands was decent as far as shooters go, but the thing that killed that game for me was the Extreme lack of environmental effects. I was let down within the first 10 minutes of playing it. I got off the buss at the beginning of the game and I saw a bottle sitting on top of a box. I figured I might as well test out my starting guns so I took aim on the bottle and unloaded....and the bottle was still there. It didn't shatter. The box it was sitting on didn't take any damage. I was immensely let down. Any modern shooter these days needs to have deformable terrain and a environment you can do damage to. You should be able to shoot through wood with a powerful gun. Glass should shatter when it's shot. Large explosions should leave craters in the ground. If those things aren't incorporated into DNF I'll be passing on it, which is sad because I loved the humor in Duke Nukem back in the day. There's nothing more fun than killing pigs dressed as cops . Hell, the first time I even saw a pig dressed as a cop I laughed my ass off. Good times....good times. Lets hope DNF does come out and it doesn't suck.
Borderlands is more like Diablo with guns then it is a normal shooter. There's a lot of things it doesn't do that standard shooters are expected to do, but the fun in it is getting new powers and zilions of guns.
I did enjoy those aspects, it's true, but not nearly as much as I would have if it would of had a deformable environment. I'm not saying it's a bad game, just not as fun as it could have been.
If Duke Nukem stays true to it's roots and is simply a damn good Shoot 'Em Up (remember when we called FPS that?) that is a blast (no pun intended) to play, I'll purchase it. If it's a generic, watered down shooter that tries to be Half-Life and ends up the sequel to Diakatana, then obviously I won't.
I won't hold my breath this time around. When they release a playable demo, then I'll believe there's some chance in hell it will see a release.
I'll believe it when there's a retail release. Anything else than that is baseless rumors, as far as I am concerned.
I hear something like this about every 4 months.
Rumours have been confirmed: Duke Nukem Forever is being 'polished for release' by Gearbox studios for a 2010 release, heading to consoles in 2011.
I sure hope it's good. Then again they could remake Duke 3D with updated engine/Gfx and I'd probably be happy. I had some serious fun with that game, over the Sega Saturn's netlink no less .
saw this on www.joystiq.com. Here's a link to the actual footage - feel free to add to the op if you like. In short, this really doesn't mean its NOT vaporware, but it might just be a quick demo from a completely unfinished game. Its only a 15 minute demo per the folks at pax. but GEARBOX is involved, so it might be legit. Here the link to joystiq's video.
