Once again, Science is in line with the scriptures. In this case, the Science is in the form of one of the most brilliant Scientific minds of our era, Stephen Hawking. Hawking came out recently saying we need to abandon earth or face extinction. Pretty strong, sobering words coming from a very smart guy. In fact he's advocating we act fast.
Reminds me of the question posed to Jesus, another brilliant mind, by his disciples. "What will be the sign of your coming and the end of the age?"
The answer and description given by Jesus, and then later by John in his vision on the isle of Patmos, is not far off from where Hawking is coming from. In other words, just like the "circle of the earth" and "the earth hangs on nothing" another biblical truth comes to light via the Scientific world showing us that God gave us some very important scientific answers all along.
Biblically speaking, the end of the age will start with a cosmic disturbance. The signs will be in the heavens. Many have mentioned astroids as being the destructive means by which this may happen. Some say nuclear bombs will be our undoing.
The bible is clear about this cosmic disturbance that will usher in the end. It says "the sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes." Joel 2:31
and...
"there was a great earthquake and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood: and the stars of heaven fell to the earth even as a fig tree casts her untimely figs when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together and every mountain and island were moved out of their places." Rev 6:12-14
Of course, Hawking has given us his view, sans scripture, but both are saying pretty much the same thing. There's coming a day when we will go from one age to another or we will face extinction on this earth. In Hawking's view he's suggesting we explore space for alternative habitation. In God's Word it says he will usher in a "new heaven and a new earth."
There are many signs that show us that the time is drawing near. Look at what's going on in the animal kingdom. Look at mankind and the hatred, greed and violence that is permeating our culture by the hands of many. The weather and climate is but just another thing to watch. The diseases and pestilences as well. All are going to get expedientially stronger until we can't ignore it any longer. I can't pick up the daily newspaper and not wonder how long do we have?
Only God knows.
Our job is to be ready.
Probably not nukes anymore, but either way, until we manage to get our heads out of our asses, set up a supranational government to consolidate the wealth and power of several of the richer nations (something I'm sure all you republican types will fight tooth and nail), and start permanent colonies with self sustaining populations on other planets within the solar system, pretty much anything in space big enough that can hit the planet will be enough to wipe out humanity. But, considering the odds of an asteroid or comet of sufficient size to cause an ELE actually hitting the Earth before we move out is slim to none, it's far more likely that we'll eat the planet to death first.
Assuming total eclipses for both, the first happens about once a year, and the second occurs three to four times in two years every other two years. Considering the fact that the greeks of about the third century BC were about as advanced as we are now, and the romans based many of their technologies on the greeks, it shouldn't be even remotely surprising that they could predict that total solar and lunar eclipses would occur in the future and record that fact. The fact that they had to couch it in terms that the cults would be willing to copy down and attribute to the invisible floating energy being in the sky to ensure its survival does nothing but reinforce the opinion that organized religion is the bane of humanity. By the logic of this particular passage, the next approximate date for the apocalypse is the 5th of april 2015, assuming the turning has to happen in the sun-moon order, not any way it feels like happening, and that they have to be within a short period of time from each other. Then we aren't going to have another good shot at it until 2033.
This follows the same logic as the above response, that the greeks and romans, being at a similar level of scientific knowledge as we are today, were able to predict that sometime in the future a massive rock would come plummeting out of the sky to a point as yet unexplored on the planet's surface, eject a significant percentage of the crust of the planet into the atmosphere, with the larger chunks falling back to the planet several hundred miles away from the impact site, and that the impact would deform the planet enough to cause massive earthquakes and a tsunami large enough to wipe out most of europe, asia, and africa (AKA the known world).
So the fact that a good eigth of the world population (yes, I pulled that number out of my ass) has been saying essentially the same thing for years meant nothing to you until you managed to find one notable scientist who, if his words are twisted in a certain way, seems like he supports the particular cult you are a member of.
One man stating his thinking is not science, it isn't even a scientific idea as such. I always thought that when the new age was on us and all those who had the fortune of being born into the right religion (which is after all where 90% of believers in any bronze age creation myth chose their particular myth) would be taken up into heaven.
What prof Hawkins is suggesting is very different
Religion aside, I actually agree with Hawking's premise. It is simple enough. If you have all your eggs in one basket, then you are vulnerable. And that is so. It could be a man made catastrophe, or a meteor yet uncharted. But then I am a space geek and want man to break out of the egg shell and advance across the universe.
No, we do not have the technology today, but in 1960, we did not have the technology to reach the moon either. 9 years later we did.
Man is only limited by his imagination.
Didn't the Soviet Union (among others) attempt something similar to that? History is a powerful thing. Well, nobody can say your handle doesn't fit your ideology! Best of luck with your new world order hope your leader is a benevolent one (they rarely are).
Because communisim and capitalism are the same thing. Technically, the federal government of the US is supranational if one considers the states to be very weak nations, and we haven't collapsed yet despite how much the republicans obviously want to see it happen.
Sounds like our schools have failed you. I'm just guessing economics was not your strong point. I'd love to hear your explanation, though. Should be interesting.
That's a stretch. I don't buy it, thou you may.
Sounds like talking points to me. I always believed a large government, an over abundance of entitlement programs, and spending is what collapses a government. How about some facts to support your rhetoric?
KFC,
Thanks for another thought provoking article but then again linking Hawking, an avowed atheist, with Scriptural Endtime prophecy would be.
As Christians, we know this is absolutely true. The end of the world is coming which no living creature will be able to avoid, but we don't know when.
I couldn't disagree more. Where in Scripture is it that we need to abandon earth or face extinction?
Christ tells us to pray and watch, not abandon earth.
huh? Did you mean to say this? Surely not.
you don't know it but you're talking biblically. It's called a one-world government or one world order. We are fast approaching that time. Be careful what you wish for. The leader that will eventually lead this up is no Ronald Reagan or if you prefer...Bill Clinton.
That's alot of assuming. No this is going to be much greater than an eclipse. Alot more is involved. In fact if you kept reading you would see men hiding under cliffs and rocks begging them to fall on them to hide from their surroundings. It will be a terrible time. Not merely a simple eclipse.
oh so they knew about the black hole? They knew about the vastness of the universe that we're just beginning to understand today? Our technology is so much better than yesteryear, I don't know how you can say this.
well it looks like your behind has quite the storage capacity!
What did I twist? I have been involved in cults (in the past) and am no long affiliated with any but thanks for the concern. All I'm showing is the fact that this particular Scientist is saying pretty much what the bible has consistently said. This age is limited and we will either be destroyed or lifted out to begin another.

Technically, he is correct - at least constitutionally and the intent of the founders. In reality? You are closer to correct. But that is just the perversion of the Constitution by the Federal Government.
You are about 180 degrees off there. Our form of government as created by the founders is in danger due to the democrats, and lesser so from the republicans. But if you wanted to assign a blame to one part, the democrats are far and away the greater threat as we see today.
He has no idea what he's wishing for. The new world leader on the horizon will be worse than any we've ever had before. He will be a Hitler type but worse. We've been warned. It's just a matter of if we believe it or not. It all comes down to Faith.
it has nothing to do with man-made religion or being born into one. There are many religious groups that say this but they would be in error. There is no man made church out there that is going to save us. It all comes down to you and your creator. It's your relationship with him that matters not what religion you were born into. It's not about religion but about relationship that matters.
The premise is the same. His solution is different because he's relying on man instead of God which goes back to his humanistic thinking. It seems, as tho Hawking goes right to the door of heaven but then stops and offers a man-made solution or idea. The only difference, again, is someone like me turns to God for the answers instead of man.
Reality is a funny thing. I personally can't equate a state capable of only administering most of it's internal affairs and none externally, with the rest of the world, as a nation. But I did acknowledge Doombringer's right to that view, even if I believe it evaporated about 80 years ago. If the Federal government went away tomorrow, some states would cease to exist in their current form.
Sounds like our schools have failed you too. I'm just guessing sarcasm was not your strong point.
Because dammit, uniting the human race under any banner but that of christianity is WRONG!
And yet, if you could manage to get past the egocentric "I'm better than the ancients because I'm CHRISTIAN!" viewpoint that you have and continue reading past the point you picked out, you'd have seen that I continued with
Now, I'd call that an apocalypse, even if it doesn't involve an invasion by the evil invisible floating energy beings in the sky. But of course, because it has a logical explaination, it's dead wrong because dammit, the invisible floating energy being in the sky said it was going to happen different than that.
I'd ask for actual physical proof that the invisible floating energy being in the sky actually exisists and does all the crap your cult says it does, but you'll just try and shift the burden of proof onto the scientific community instead of actually trying to come up with logical and believable explaination to prove that invisible floating energy being in the sky does exist and does all the crap your cult says it does.
Unless you don't believe that the christian god is the one true god. By the logic of the bible, if I have a good relationship with Thor, Odin and Loki, I'm going straight to hell because dammit, theres only one omnipotent invisible floating energy being in the sky and not a whole bunch of them.
Actually I have a fairly good grasp of what I'm wishing for. The fact that you are incapable of even hypothesizing a world where humanity is united under one banner and doesn't bow down to the cults without instantly assuming that the only way it would happen is at the apocalypse and under the antichrist just shows how good the various cults are at brainwashing. Of course the odds of it actually getting off the ground in the next fifty years are slim, as I'm sure 3/4 of the current indoctrinated christian population would instantly turn to mass acts of terrorism and assassination to try and stop it. of course, after we get to the point where the population of religious nutjobs is too old to actually be able to do anything about it, the odds start to increase drastically.
Utilizing a population of 7.0 billion for the population of the world, 1/8th of the population is about 900 million, compared to the 2.2 billion population of christians. Shaving a quarter of that population off to account for non-diehard "if I just pray enough anything I need will come to me and I won't suffer" whackjobs who might actually approve of scientific advances that allow us to ensure the survival of the human race by settling a viable (IE more than two people) population on another planet, you end up with 1.6 billion, still more than the population of China. Shrinking those numbers down to the population of the US it's 38,750,000 people who state that we need to colonize another planet vs the 77 million diehard "we don't need to expand because god will save us" christians, or the EU(another supranational government by the way) with 63 million colonists vs 127 million diehards, and Japan with 16 million colonists vs 32 million diehards. I only mention these three because they are the only three with elected officials that can be influenced by the cults with the economic power and a space agency to actually attempt extraterrestrial coloinzation. China is far more likely to be the first to set up a permanent extraterrestrial colony, simply because it doesn't have to listen to the cults whining.
Most would. The irony is that of the few states that can claim to have been self ruled in history, almost none of them could survive on their own. Texas I believe could, but I would be hard pressed to find any others among the 14 (the 13 original colonies plus Hawaii).
That's what I thought...no explanation.
Just because Stardock creates fantasy play worlds with their games, doesn't mean you have to live it out in the real world (or even JU political forums). Try to separate the two and you won't be so disappointed as you mature.
So when you eliminate Christianity, are you just hoping the other world religions join your one world fantasy? Or will the death star be ready to subjigate them by then?

I plan on eliminating all the cults, oh sorry Religions, because none of them have done a damn thing to help humanity. Of course this is in fantasy liberal nutcase ville since obviously the republicans and their "conservative" backers will do anything in their power to screw the world with constant wars preventing any chance of any human advancement. Whether you like it or not, eventually there will be one world government, and odds are it won't kow tow to any religion/cult with political power.
also, Nitro, the fact that you are completely incapable of understanding sarcasm concerns me for your future. Maybe when you grow up a little bit you can participate in the adults' conversations.
KFC writes:
and then conclude with this contradiction.
..............
I agree.
What do you mean, the premise is the same? No where in Scripture is it found that we need to abandon earth or face extinction.
Doombringer90 posts:
The point is there is no connection between Hawking's assertions and Scripture and Christianity. Hawkings assertions twisted or not do not support Scripture or Christianity.
Scripture is about religion....the OT describes the development of Biblical Judaism (religion) and the NT describes the development of Christianity (religion). You quoted Scripture in an attempt to connect Hawkings' ideas and the Endtimes.
it's not about religions helping people. It's about people helping people. And Christians in the name of Christ have done more to shape our world more than any other group. Would you like me to start listing all the things Christians in the name of Christ have done thru the centuries including Christ who led the way dying for others and not himself?
DB...YOU need to do some growing here. Let me help you.
Sarcasm doesn't play well over the net. Just want you to be in the loop.
Now I will give you some time to clean up your language on reply #16 or I will be forced to delete it. I run a PG rated site here. To me, using profanity means you don't have a good grasp on the English language so be careful on your use of descriptive language especially those of the four leter kind. I would appreciate your help in this area.
And yet 3/4 of the population of the planet would have been able to figure it out. The fact that you and him couldn't, well, that's not really my problem. I would have thought that it was fairly obvious that communism and capitalism weren't the same thing, but because I don't silently nod my head up and down in agreement with every single thing you two post, I'm instantly labeled an idiot and a failure of the education system. Maybe you two should do some critical thinking before you instantly assume that I have no clue what I'm talking about next time?
well since this has NEVER happened EVER and Christians have NEVER EVER expected it too I'm not sure where you're going with this. Biblically speaking the wheat (believers) and tares (unbelievers) are to grow together until the end happens. The Harvest comes at the end of the age. We were NEVER to force our beliefs on others. Anyone doing so is going AGAINST Christ and are not representing Him accurately. He said basically GO and tell. If they accept you, they accept me and you've gained a brother. If not, shake off the dust and move on.
you know you bring up something I've been saying for quite a while. Critical thinking has become some sort of a lost art these days. And as far as assuming..you 've already admitted this is your game.
Thanks DB for you know what ...
I note with amusement that they list "No Religion" and "Atheism" separately. Seems that atheism is a religion.
Perhaps you should take your own advice about an "adult" conversation, as this one markedly went juvenile at comment #5. Oh, is this quote more sarcasm?
...or has your mom let you watch too much cartoons? Maybe if you ever said one damn insightful thing on these pages, we could separate your "sarcasm" from plain ol' idiocy. Until then, there are a couple of blogs over on the "Off-Topic" forum that cater exclusively to those with your mind set. The next Imperial shuttle is waiting for you young Skywalker.
Perhaps they are trying to differentiate between Atheists and Agnostics, I assume there are subtle differences, or maybe there are some that are just unaware of any particular religion.
