I notice the Elven Legacy is on sale at Impulse. I am tempted to buy the game. I have read some reviews of the first version. Apparently it is a lot like HOMM. But one complaint of the reviewers is that if you don't finish the map in very quick order (so undue wandering around), you fail and must start again. It becomes like an untimed puzzle.
So is this a legit complaint about the game and its sequels?
I am tempted to buy the game but I don't like games where the number of moves you make determines the outcome.
Thx!
The game is pretty difficult. It's very similar to Battle for Wesnoth (which is a free game of the same genre) with more abilities and stuff...
All I know is that the Elf in the adverts isnt that hot...
You can play in different difficulty modes. Taking the easiest mode you have enough time to finish the main goal and moving around. This is how I enjoyed the game mostly.
Its nothing like HOOM. Its very hard, but also quite interesting. I hate time limits on missions though... The game is like Battle of Wesnoth, Battle Isle, Panzer Genral (got it now? )
Not strictly true. You get a medal rating (gold - bronze) depending on the length it takes you to finish the battle. Earning gold in some battles unlocks bonus missions on the campaign map. You don't fail for going over the time limit (in fact you can take as long as you want), and you can always go back and re-fight a battle to unlock the bonus mission (which is usually a necessity, since during the campaign you'll want to search the map thoroughly for as much booty as you can grab, once you've looted it you can then go back and blitz it to get the unlock).
Not sure why it would be compared to HOMM, it's a hex based wargame. Fantasy General would be a closer cousin.
I really like the table top graphics to the game, and the combat is pretty awesome. Perks, rock paper scissor method, support, terrain advantages. Its a great system. I wish Elemental copied that one.
But unfortunately the only thing you do in Elven Legacy is combat. So it gets boring after one campaign. And hard too, like you get vastly outnumbered.
Elven Legacy is good, but really hard if you go "I want all gold victories".
The expansion are really good, and a little bit easier but still hard.
The thing you need to know are the effects of perks in game. Some of them are must-have and others are situational. A battle can be hard if you didn't wisely choose your perks.
If you liked Fantasy General, take Elven Legacy WITH its expansion because they really add to the game.
And it has nothing to do with HoMM : EL is just a combat simulator and a real good one.
