Well, there's PLENTY of buzz going on all over the web about the pirated release of Starcraft 2. I haven't tried this for my-self, so I can only speak on what I've read on various web-sites, which I will Not post links to here, but I can at least talk about what I read.
Apparently the pirating group known as RELOADED has already hacked SC 2. Normally when games are pirated they loose All multiplayer functionality but this appears not to be the case with SC 2. The pirated copy doesn't connect to BattleNet but it can supposedly do "Challenge" matches, the single player campaign works with saves and loads functioning, and the editors are working.
This makes me wonder if people are going to try to sell Mods made with pirated tools? This can't be good news for Blizzard since they have so much riding on this one being a blockbuster. Then again most of us who bought it wanted it for the multiplayer anyway. I do how-ever think it's a pretty dickish move by Blizzard to sell the game 3 times with campaigns for the 3 different races. Seriously, they couldn't have given us all 3 campaigns in one game? That just seems like trying to milk the customers if you ask me. I'm seriously hoping when the next two games come out they'll be at reduced price if you bought Wings of Liberty.
With everything the government is doing to fight piracy right now, maybe this will open some eyes and show some people that the government is going after the wrong people when they need to be going after the groups putting these things out (like Reloaded).
Wait, you mean the same Dawn of War 2 that only lets you play as one race in the campaign, directly following Blizzard's lead? What a great example! (Also, it's comparable in length to the campaign in Wings of Liberty, so I guess they were also selling only a fraction of a game at full price. What jerks.)
Also, in addition to what Tridus said, DoWII does not have a 50+ hour campaign. It also has an expansion pack that contiunes the story (of the Blood Ravens the centeral theme of all Dawn of War). Nor does it have 87 missions, or over (and most of its missions were very 'arena' like with little in the way of story and many many of them were the same map with no persistence just rotated a little bit).
No dice.
How do you get from this...
To this...
While in agreement with SpaghettiMon about Activision and Kotick, I don't think splitting the game into three parts is really an evil plot. The original StarCraft came out March 31 1998. Brood War came out November 1998. Was this done purely to milk players? Probably not. Brood War brought huge improvements but probably could not have been rolled into the original game release since the improvements were not yet thought of.
Probably each Chapter of SC2 will bring its own set of improvements. Two Brood War expansions instead of one. At least we can hope.
I think I saw a quote from someone at Blizzard that implied they knew heavy piracy was coming and were all right with that since the same had been true with SC1. Might have been on sclegacy.
On a technicality, DoW II lets you play infinitely long since it "randomly" creates new missions (albeit with rinse-and-repeat dialog). Also, DoW has always focused on one race at a time?
Another big thing is that DoW's expansion packs aren't required and you get all the free content without having to rebuy it to play on MP. No split community. The only difference is you can't play the new race online and you can't play the new campaign.
All I know is I got both games for half the price of Starcraft ($30), and that was a few days after release  If it's SP is only half as good then I'm happy.
You also haven't retorted Rise of Legends, which had unique missions/scripting/dialog.
Finally:
The reason they only do SM for the campaign (and probably always will) is because SM are their #1 customer base. Over half the players online play SM, regardless of their power levels (weak or strong in the meta. Typically they are on the weak side ANYWAY). Appeal to the market to make money.
How do you get to play DoWII infinitly long? There is always a end mission after which the campaign stops. Also how is playing the same map over and over and over any different from playing SC2 maps again for achievements?
How do you know that isnt how SC2 will work. You can play all races in MP atm.
So you got a discount from somewhere? Great for you, but where i live DoWII did cost €10 more than SC2 at release.
I also played RoL a couple of times and i did not find anything special about the missions or scripting. And what is unique dialog? Did they invent words or something?
And Finally:
Being greedy bastards is now a plus in your book for developers and those would have like to play Orcs can rot in the gutter. But if Blizzard does this its evil ... because ... uh ... whats was your point?
Blizzard do what they do - i mean they split up campaign into 3 games - because they simply can. You can be sure they are going to sell shitload of copies of those expansions. Anyway what do you expect from company (Activision-Blizzard), which is run by Bobby Kotick? They are even worse than EA and that is some feat.
IMHO the Ghost of the Past trailer looks pretty good, almost like trailer to a movie. It actually contrasts with the gameplay graphics, which looks like cartoony. And Sarah Kerrigan - pre infestation - looks fucking good!!! She has to be the hottest game character ever! I need HD Wallpaper of her!
Read the link. DoW 2's developers were the ones who said they were following Blizzard on this. It seems fairly likely that they have some idea of what they're talking about.
Random maps with canned dialog don't count as a campaign. That's just random maps.
My wife got Starcraft 2 for free, if you want to go there. DoW 2 was a normal priced game when it came out, and if they follow DoW they'll have twice as many expansions as SC 2. If you get all those to keep up with the campaign, they need to be awfully cheap before you're spending more money then anybody is on SC 2.
I never played it, and couldn't find much info online about the campaign (seems like the game itself sold poorly so the info is pretty lacking). Given how well the other examples worked out, I don't much expect to find a campaign triple the size of Wings of Liberty though, which it'd need to be if this nonsense about "splitting the campaign into three" was actually true.
So it's okay for them to do it over Blizzard because their other races aren't interesting enough for people to want to play them? That makes sense.
This all debate just buffles me. judging by the quality of the missions on this campaign, it is fairly obvious blizzard seperated the game into 3 parts not because they wanted to milk the fan base, but because the terran campaign itself equals and surpass in length and production values all of the former sc1 campaigns and most other similiar games in the market, while succeding to provide a much better game than most of them, especially Dow2 single player, as bland repetetive and awfully scripted missions should not even count as a time worthy exprience.
Dow2 vanilla is pure MP, the single player mode is just crap. enjoyable for exactly 3 hours, which is very disapointing as i would have hoped to imagine relic have learned from their past exprience with Dow1, which in the vanilla form offered an Ok single player campaign but nothing more. the only reason DoW1 is being praised, is its slightly innovative mechanics and great expansions.
Blizzard showed again, to much of the dismay of the internet, why they are considered to be the creator of the best gaming exprience around. while not being as innovative as other companys, they still provide the most polished, highly detailed and all around well thought out games in the market, needless to say, that while it is pretty subjectivley, they are the most enjoyable as well. and while i prefer rise of nations/legends, company of heroes and men of war over starcraft, i can aknowledge that for the majority, Sc2 is much more enjoyable.
As for pirates trying to sell maps from the galaxy editor, this is hardly an option. the only way to earn money from your maps is via blizzard distrubition system, and blizzard takes revenues from that as they keep the rights to any creation made from the galaxy editor. if you are dumb enough to try and sell the map by your self outside of blizzard's system, even if you bought a legit copy, be sure you will get sued.
We have a winner!
they might add new units into the game with these X packs.. even if they are full price. wouldn't mind some Zerg or Portoss collector portraits though the WoL were wow based ...
played close to 14 hours on a 2 guest pasts 2nd one got into gold league for 2v2 so far positive win/loss
I gave you karma for this post!
Well spoken!
