Oh, she’s pretty.
Ah the Krax. She’ll lead you.
I can name my units
Yikes.
Mutant Children
I’m open minded
I'd like to explain in my words, which I'm hopin Tuco can relate to. I'm concerned with how much time we have left before release. One month away, and people still look like they are based off characters in a second rate childrens tv show. Its disgusting, and one month is not a lot of time to polish. people keep saying, "oh its not done yet, its not done yet" but do you realize how short one month is? My guess is that the game you see is the game you are gettin at this point. Yea, 1.0 will be more balanced, but the look will be the same.
I agree with your modding point tho tormy, I just hope your good at this whole modding thing. haha But it's sad to think we have to rely on mods to make the game what we want it to be. To be honest though, I've agreed the most with yours and Denryus points and visions for this game since the beginning. I think we have the same idea for what we wanted this to be. So I'll be lookin for your mod come release, and i'll be workin on an art mod for sure
Quoting the Gorgon, reply 46It would be great if you include same-sex marriages as a way to link your civ with others even if you don't have the possibility to get an heir from that arrangement. Can't believe that would be controversial for anyone with fitting age and IQ to play Elemental. I mean, today same sex marriages are celebrated in CHURCH, and so what? The greatest empire builder and warlord of all time, Alexander the Great, was more into men than women BTW. So why couldn't a sovereign be? You get to marry off your cute princess to a troll-like monster but not to an amazon queen - now THAT would be backward thinking ... I refrain from bringing up a discrimination discussion, but hey, just like the discussion on female friendly features, please make a game for our time, and you will get a lot of fan good-will back in the long run, you can be sure. Don't spread misinformation please. What Church are you talking about? Not the Catholic Church, nor the Orthodox church, nor the Islamic churches allow, nor celebrate Homosexual marriages. Even most protestant churches do not allow Homosexual marriages. You are talking about a very small minority that do allow and/or celebrate it. Another thing, Alexander was not the greatest empire builder and warlord of all time. That honor goes to Ghenghis Khan who conquered the largest empire in the history of the world. I would than also go on to say look at the Roman Empire. They are probably the greatest influence on modern civilization of any other empire, not to mention the longest standing empire of all time. Alexander's empire was very short lived and did not last past his death.I really hope your not getting all your information from the movie that came out a few years ago. It is true that in Greece, it was acceptable for older men to have sex with younger boys, but I would not say that Alexander especially loved a guy more than a woman and same sex marriage was never allowed. While they may have enjoyed homosexual sex on occasion, they understood that it had nothing to do with marriage as a marriage encompassed a man and a woman who could produce offspring to continue the family line. The movie may have portrayed Alexander in that way but it was a dramatization and personal opinion, not actual historical fact. I also don't equate racial marriage to be the same thing as same sex marriage as you are doing. [/quote]
What misinformation? I'm talking about the Christian protestant church of Sweden, which was even official State Church until some few years ago and to which the overwhelming majority of the population belongs. This happens to be my home country, so it does count. All Christians do not spend their energy on expressing their hate instead of love. Hm sounds like something Jesus could have liked. It's only a suggestion.
As for Alexander being the greatest or the second greatest or third conqueror, that was my personal opinion, based upon his name ( ) and his interesting life. I find him more inspiring than Ghengis Khan. And if you thought the recent Hollywood film included a gay theme as a "personal opinion" of Oliver Stone; then think again: their problem was rather how to make a Hollywood blockbuster while still being true to what we know of him (and his relationships) from historical sources. (Meaning almost any such references were cut out). And on top of that, history is written by the conqueror and still today most of them think very heteronormative ... Just like scientists for hundreds of years "explained away" same sex relationships between animals that we now know are a fact (because at least the animals have to be "natural", no ...)
If you want an even more powerful model personality I give you Zeus, the most powerful of all the gods in the classical Greek mythos, who i.a. abducted Ganymede and took him to heaven for his beauty.
Just to put things straight.
Seriously, this cannot be that BIG of an issue for you guys.
It's a win-win every way you look at it because, one way or another, everyone is going to get what they want. You guys are debating and fighting and it's all really futile because nobody's opinion is gonna change on the issue. Personally, I don't give a #$%@ but I cannot believe that this is THAT big of an issue here. For the most part, everyone here has seemed really friendly, happy, and open-minded until you bring out potential gay marriage and BOOM it becomes another stupid debate board/thread. I just hope that the attitude stays in this thread and not else-ware.
Just make a checkbox "Turn off x feature that I do not agree with" button. Since we can name units anyway, whats to stop someone from naming their princess heirs with male names, etc, anyway? lol
Anyways, a bit of controversy will be good for sales.
Also, will the human artwork look any better by release? Right now, they look like human colored trolls. Has it been that hard on the human race after the apocalypse?
I believe that any graphics wizards should start coming up with a skinning package download to release at launch... or for testing. Right now we do need more skin options... and clothing.
But yeah, a little controversy is good sometimes. But it can be like the family is fighting.
If you like Alexander and think he was a great influence, that's fine, however Alexander was not the greatest conqueror in history for many reasons. There are some that even say that he was basically just following the plans of Aristotle, his teacher, and those of his father as well. He was certainly charismatic, but all great leaders are. Those in the western world see him as great because to them, he is a hero, but there have been many great empires over time and there are different qualifications and ideas of what a great empire really is. There is also new realizations all the time about empires we never knew or knew little about.
You do realize that Zeus was not real right? Plus, you completely misunderstand the whole idea of why the Greeks would write about Zeus taking Ganymede for his beauty. It had nothing to do with homosexuality. To the Greeks, the body of a young male or female was godlike. They practically worshiped youth and the beauty of youth. Youth being a human in their prime with a perfect physical form which they all wanted and greatly admired. Not much different from today really.
Anyway, the game is looking great so far. The more customization the game offers when it comes to characters and such will be interesting.
Even in a mature environment like the beta-stage of this game, people just want to start some moral discussion, why ? Please just take our opinion and take it to crapbook or whatever site with high concentration of people that feel themselves so important that they need to spread their crap all over the place ...
Can we just keep talking about the game?
And yes this is my first post, pretty disappointing actually I just pre-ordered and installed the beta and I'm loving a lot of aspects of the game especially the dynasties ! Coincidentially I'm designing a board game based on dynasties, you don't find these things often in games and I'm so happy it's included in one of most anticipated games for me ! Been waiting since the Age of Wonders games to get a similar style game but with a lot more depth, and it's delivering.
Not used to be a beta tester I am a bit lost, but having fun trying testing out the dynasties especially. Last game I started I ended up on an island, had to use raise land spell to get to ... another deserted island Ideal for breeding !
"Last game I started I ended up on an island, had to use raise land spell to get to ... another deserted island"
You can construct harbors near the sea, then build ships and transport large #'s of folks that way too.

Not that it matters to this game at all but I won't let you off the hook on this one. First, Zeus might be about as real as our Christian God depending on how you see it and which time you live in. For the greeks he was a real god. As a character he is definately real, which is what is of interest to us here on a game forum. Secondly, I didn't mention the word homosexuality in my reply, and indeed the greeks didn't even have that concept. But you are the one interpreting history/mythology if you think that Zeus only had a platonic interest in the girls and guys he was chasing after, making his wife jealous all the time. I just repeat what any tour guide as well as many books will tell you. Same with Appollon, but you are of course free to interpret things as you want. Considering your violent reaction, I guess it must be pretty important for your self concept and maybe self esteem to interpret all close relations with the same sex as platonic only. LOL!
wow, i apologize for any role i played in completely derailing this thread.. i just like options in my game to fiddle around with and thought it might be kinda fun if gay marriage was included. since reproduction seems to be the main goal of marriage in elemental. its not likely to be something that most people would do anyway, as i cant see how it would benefit your game in any way. it seems to me, if its included at all, it'd likely just be something to do for fun. as games are meant to be fun. since none of us know for sure if that screen shot was just an example of what we cant do in the arranged marriage screen. i think every one should just back off that topic a bit.
Could this whole "gay marriage" screenshot have been any more blown out of proportion? Now, personally, I think it's funny. I'm just imagining two royal families, rubbing their chins wondering how to solidify their alliance with only two sons... LIGHTBULB!
Sigh. I don't honestly think this will make it into the final game. Even if it did, I wouldn't care, not just because all my Sim families are in fact lesbian sorority houses. It's not as if it isn't a quick fix, at any rate.
I hate the Wanted comics with a passion. I will personally strangle Mark Millar if I ever see him for writing that absolute and utter piece of sh*t. I could have read a Kurt Vonnegut novel instead.
Freaking A, you guys.
Anyways, re: diplomatic relations, of course diplomatic marriages are a good way to bring countries together. But what about sending children to be adopted by another faction?
In feudal Japan, for example, it was common practice to do just this. You could send your son to serve with another empire as an adopted son of that lord/daimyo. It shows a lot of trust from the person giving up their son into the hands of a potential enemy.
That would be a good way to boost relations with another land.
Conversely, this was also a way for powerful daimyo to insure loyalty of vassal lords: Require them to send their wives and/or children to live in their castle.
What do you think, Frogboy?
Just wait for when one of those japanese otakus (in the worst japanese sense) wants to marry his own female Sovereign. Really.
I'm sorry, I really don't want to derail the thread, but this guy keeps posting nonsense. Nothing I have said is violent, perhaps you misunderstood me because of your incomplete knowledge of English, as that is not your first language. I also think it is funny that you consider yourself a Christian and say that Zeus might be real, your obviously not a very faithful Christian. I also never said I was Christian, for all you know, I could be Islamic, or Buddhist or an Atheist. The stories of Zeus, are just that, stories, trying to logically discuss Zeus when he isn't even real is just funny. I guarantee that I know more about this topic than you though, unless you are a teacher of history or theology, which I am. The character of Zeus often cheated on his wife with women, but I never saw it mention ever with a man. He also spawned many children from various women. That was not what I was discussing though and can we please end it? Thanks.
It might be cool to be able to send your young children to another country for a time. Might be cool if you fall in relation to another country they then use your child as a bargaining chip. In medieval times kings would often keep children of other lords under their "protective" care to ensure the loyalty of other lords and such. The same could happen with other kings sons and daughters as well.
So, what, you want drag queens in Elemental now?
Me: Hey, let's join in a marriage alliance to defeat the Fallen!
Other Lord: I like the idea, but I want to see what's under the frock first...you wouldn't believe how many "princesses" have been offered to me lately... *a "princess" named Conania waves, with a full beard and is a hairy as a warg*
Make them green and you can then have troll colored humans!
@BlackRainZ
Dude, please stop. This is becoming offensive by insulting people's language comprehension and religious beliefs. It's further derailing this thread more and more. There is just no end in sight without some restraint here.
Ok, enough, it's ended. More game discussion, please.
LOL. In an age with magic and shapeshifting, this might need to be a mandatory practice... especially to sustain any line of succession in a Kingdom.
Yes.
Because their official papers have been changed.
(depends in which country of course)

Yes, please stop derailing this thread, Sir. I made a suggestion for a game mechanic based on Frogboy’s original post. You reply with stating that I spread misinformation (without any basis for it). That is simply rude.
But since you ask for it, I'll just answer you in the same vein one last time.
If you don't think you react "violently", maybe you should try and reread what you are actually posting. "this guy keeps posting nonsense" - very nice tone, thank you, Sir ... Great argument too, he, he.
I hope you realise you are only making a fool of yourself by dismissing posts from all non-native English speakers on an international forum. In this case especially, since I have published loads of English texts. And I'm not the least intimidated by your bullying.
BTW, I have never told you anything about my religious beliefs so don't derail the discussion even further please. Calling people you don't know "not very faithful Christians" has nothing to do on this forum and doesn’t merit further comment.
And I'm not impressed by your claims of being a teacher of history and theology after those, sorry to say, pathetic tries to cover up your apparent attitude problem with some kind of historical argumentation. You haven't added anything to this game discussion except insults to people contributing ideas.
If you are just out of your ivory tower and new to game forums, this is not the way to start.
Ugh, end of rant, back to constructive discussion with more open-minded people trying to develop a great game.
I wasn't trying to be insulting. English is not his first language so he may well have misunderstood my use of English. How is that insulting? People misunderstand each other all the time, including people who speak the same language. I also didn't insult his religious beliefs. In order for someone to be faithful to something, they must follow what it says. I don't see how that is insulting. And I said you are posting nonsense because you accused me of being violent when I wasn't! It could have just ended before but you had to go and say something again. It is one thing if it is an opinion but you are basically attacking me now.
this thread is sad...
regarding the actual screenshots and artwork:
I do agree I don't really like the look of the races, but I believe that they are trying to keep the artwork and graphicas simple. Serious thought has gone into keeping the computer specs of this game down. I really support that, and would gladly have slightly worse graphics and artwork if myself and many of my poorer friends can play the game with outdated hardware.
Oh, this just gave me and idea for a city improvement! Maybe the watchtower could eventually evolve into an Ivory Tower and grant you another +1 visibility!
This is a good idea. George RR Martin writes about this in the Game of Thrones - where children of a conquered noble are sent to "stay" with the victor - to ensure the conquered's loyalty. Or,alternatively, where the children of the conqueror are sent to stay with the vanquished noble - perhaps as a sign of trust in the defeated noble. This could be a fairly interesting game mechanic. It would be interesting to use offspring as trip wires; like troops stationed in foreign countries as a deterrent to common enemies to show allies' resolve to act together.
Do you know what I read in here?: oh my, my opinion is sacrosanct! When I type, angels bow to the power and divinity of my words; fool are those who dare, dare! to criticize me. I am free to say whatever I want and nobody, nobody! can ever say anything bad against me because I have the right to not be offended. See, it is in my Constitution, Holy Book or whatever.
Who do you think you are, porternielsen? Some sort of inerrant moral compass who can freely point out to the right direction? Lemme clarify your problem to you, porternielsen: it is not a moral dilemma, it is an emotional one. You cannot think straight, your mind is clouded by bigotry so dense you cannot even hear your own thoughts. Let us equate same-sex marriage with murder, theft, rape and other violent crimes! It is the same thing, isn't it? I mean, violence is totally acceptable but two woman or man marrying each other is unthinkable! It will bring us ruin! Not Wall Street, not foreign wars, not environmental damage, but same-sex couples enjoying matrimonial privileges! You cannot face it can you, porternielsen? You ask to be spared of things you don't like, things you are uncomfortable with... but guess what? You are actually hurting people this way. Yes, people. Not objects, not ideas, not morals, but people; all because you fail at adapting to new circumstances.
You must be saying as you read this: but I'm talking about a game here! This have no space in a game! It is irrelevant, it is controversial and blahblahblah. Granted, it is a game but your reaction to this possible non-feature is nothing game-like. You are bringing your luggage here, porternielsen. You were the only one to raise objections, you were the only one trying to "protect" your weak ego of unwanted situations. So desperate you were that your first post in this topic was almost a veiled threat! Do you really think this is such a big deal? Controversial? Haha, this one actually made me laugh as I remembered The Sims, one of the most popular games of all times... it allows same-sex marriages. Ever did, as far as I remember. Did the game sold any less thanks to it? No, if anything sales have been high as ever. Admit it, porternielsen: this is a non-issue. If Brad decides to include it on the game, he will do it and no one, except fringe lunatics, will complain if the implementation does not break the game. If Brad decides not to include it, thanks to lore or whatever, so be it. Just don't think yourself to be so special that you can demand the game to not include options you are too fragile to digest even in a virtual world.
