Right now, when playing as a faction with the Civilized trait, you get a free city at the beginning at the game. It's automatically given a randomly generated name. The random name generator can throw up some really silly names sometimes, plus if someone likes to name their cities, it probably won't fit with the others.
So why not, as in Master of Magic, start the game by asking a name for the first city?
or at least let us rename them later on. in gal civ i often kept the given name of a planet until i managed to make it significant in some way.
Yes please. In fact, just give us the ability to rename cities in general.
Seconded (or fourthed)
I have to agree with the OP; The random name generator is great, don't get us wrong, but sometimes, it produces mashups of syllables that are at best amusing and obscene and at worst Lovecraftian. Further, I'm inclined to agree with Ziktur and Dakhar. Implementing the 'name things what you want' idea from GalCiv would make a great deal of sense, as one is playing a God-Emperor sort of character, and if the mage/priest/king guy says "You shall rename that city Bobtopia" to his court, one imagines it will be done.
Haha, one does indeed.
