This is something i Posted as a reply to someone talking about essence
i propose this.
Essence is a resource. Handled like food ..... doesn't add up
Once a certain spell or structure has been made The sovereign can add his essence to the essence pool
Hero's can take from this pool once they are made casters (by spell or whatever)
Hero's can increase their max essence by lvl'ing up
when citys get fragments and/or special resources they can add to the pool.
In addition much in spirit of the story of the game i think that if you can use essence to cure the land you should be able to use a small amount of the essence of the land.
Spells or structures can be cast/built to use the land
Ex.
Magic of the Land - For every empty piece of land within a city's influence it could add x amount of essence (very small amount like .025 so that for every 40 undeveloped squares you get one essence)
And there could be spells to take the magic from the forests and the mountains, water...ect.
Maybe even stronger spells that ruin the land for more essence.
And i love the idea of putting essence into items i have been wondering if they where going to do any MoM style weapon enchantments.
you know like flaming swords of chaotic vamparism. .........Gota love MoM
*edit* I also noticed that in the media area of the website there is a screenshot of magic in which there are different types of mana. I love this idea and am sad to see it go. With the above system you could take wind mana from the plains, earth from the woods, fire from desert, water from ...water. If nothing else i hope that something like this would be possible through the modding software.

I like this. I was thinking just about the same thing, so let me add my version of this:
I feel that Essence should not be a character stat, but rather given in small amounts by the land area you command, and in greater amounts by special locations you command (such as Shrines on Earth, Air, Fire, etc. nodes).
Essence should be used up like the food resource, and should be available to be spend on fun things such as:
1.) Land Fertilization/Beautification (Land under the DIRECT influence of your cities, i.e. very very close to them) should
COST essence, rather than provide it - as the Channeller is actively making the land more fruitful).
2.) Upkeep cost for strong magical troops (smaller troops might be paid each turn in mana, bigger troops should use up a certain amount of essence).
3.) Enchanted Weapons and Armor.
The most important issue would be that essence is refunded into the global pool once it is not used anymore. So, if my essence pool is 20 due to the amount of land and shrines under my command I could use up:
1 point for my small city, 2 for my medium city, 3 for a large one - leaving 14 in my pool.
Of these 14 I could use up:
4 for 4 large magical troops, 4 for magical weapons and armor for my champions - leaving me 6.
Now, when one of my large magical troops dies I should have the essence refunded - bringing me back up to 7 - the same principle should apply for losing cities, or destroying enchanted weapons and armor.
Yeah you explain it better but i think we are pretty much on the same page.
Except i guess i see the land recovering differently. I do not see it as recovered solely by the sovereign but started by him/her then it expands thanks to the citizens that work the land. Sence however non-barren land and magic are related somewhat by the story and the mechanics it seems that there should be a structure (some kinda channeling tower or magic chat circle that could be researched under magic) that you can build, that would slow down or completely halt the expansion of the land in exchange for a micro amount of essence based on total unused land within that city's boarders.
Or it could be explained that if it is the essence of the sovergn that heals the land that he can pull a little or alot out in order to use it for other things.
IT would have to be adjustable but i think it would add another lvl of strategy over healing the land/expanding city or more essence to create items, casters and cast spells with.
everything else i agree with you on. almost exactly what i was thinking.
