Which do you prefer?
Units to scale as they zoom or to stay a fixed size?
i like savagebananamans idea ^^ seems like the best one,
Scale as they zoom
fixed
What's the point of zooming all the way in where the screen is the size of the tile and the units are small... I like the scale to zoom, but i think there should be a threshold point where you can actually zoom in on the unit.
I like to be able to zoom in and see all the details on the units, right now you cant have both.
I prefer for the units to stay the same size relative to their surroundings. I guess I'm okay with a little bit of wiggle for purposes of viewability--such as pewter statues being larger than their surroundings--but it should be subtle.
I like the scaling. It makes it handy when you're zoomed out to have nice big characters to easily keep track of everything, and it makes the world seem all the bigger when you zoom in and realize you're not a titan, just a dude in a field surrounded by wolves and trolls.
Perhaps various types could have a threshold set where at a certain point they'll stop scaling - like Ogres, for example. Maybe they stop getting smaller halfway to the point that humans do, so that no matter what they'll always appear towering over you. It would sort of give a curved-scale effect when zooming out, too...as it would seem like the huge creatures simply zoom slower, and humans zoom faster, to reach their pewter counterparts. That may also be entirely too complicated and not worth anybody's time.
So: Scaling get's my vote
I feel like there is some confusion between scaling and fixed here... some people will clearly describe "scaling" then say "my vote is for fixed".
when i play i usually am zoomed out to the point just before it goes to cloth map. using cloth map for an over veiw or to scroll quickly (or to gloat over the sweetness of my kingdom). so id say id prefer the units to scale down as i zoom, so i can still see them.
I like the scaling with zoom
harpo
second option
Having units grow all huge as you zoom out looked initially silly to me, however I quickly got used to it as it was useful for finding units I wanted quickly. However, finding them on the empire tree or cloth map should be just as viable, and as such them becoming mountainous is an expendable feature.
However, I do greatly like the fact that they grow smaller when zooming in. I can see how others can think it would look silly, but they need to consider what it looks like when you have 80 men in that 1 tile. It looks more silly to not have them "shrinking" to fit the environment properly.
Additionally it looks better when zoomed in that they fit to scale with the little peoples in the town.
On more than one occasion playing the beta I have been irritated when zooming in to look at the pretty graphics and having to get super super close before my unit (beavis: heh) has sized down to a somewhat realistic size. I don't like having the characters be giants when they're standing next to camps and buildings. Having the units be fixed sized (and smaller, obviously) and only scaled larger once they become pewter figurines would be my preference.
I prefer the scale as they zoom option if we have to pick one or the other. However, I agree that the check box should remain as I see uses for both.
Fixed size. Easier to see.
I prefer the scaling.
Edit: Finally got it to play had to change setting from 360p to 480p.
Now my 2 cents i like both options and I can see switching between them.
If i had to Pick just one then I would take Scale.
I dont really care that much but i think i like fixed better. Hopefully we can have the option to change like you have there.
I would keep uints (and buildings?) at a fixed size on the non-cloth world - the only reason I'm not doing this right now is that it seems to take units 5 times longer to travel between tiles if their size is not scaled.
The second one is better, or units just become too big when you zoom in. Leave the box though. I may change my mind.
Fixed, if I had to pick.
I'd much prefer to keep the option of both!
I'm with Raven - I'd rather the units have a fixed size, and thus look smaller the farther out I'm zoomed. The scaling has bothered me ever since we got the 3D graphics.
I would like to keep the option, though (and as it's already in, I don't even feel bad about asking for that )
Hard to say, I rather like the way zooming is *currently* handled in the Beta. However, I guess eventually I would prefer scaling while my gut reaction only from this video would be to keep it fixed.
Also, I could see fixed being more useful early game, and scaling more useful late game.
What he said!
Thus...fixed.
